I'm watching this in April 2020 while in quarantine, and this is quite honestly one of the most nostalgic things ever. Diamond was my first Pokémon game, and I played it through so many times. I remember watching this 5 years ago as each episode came out and being absolutely blown away that someone I looked up to so much was playing this and enjoying just like I did. I can almost guarantee you won't see this Emile, but this LP and and your Pikmin 1 and 2 LPs helped me through a very tough 6 months in which my house burnt down, and coming home from school and watching your videos after my dad unbanned me from watching your videos because of the somewhat innuendo like jokes and it made that time so much more bearable. In short, thank you for almost 10 years of amazing content and making me and so many other people laugh, smile and make life so much better!

Oh man, I was irrationally excited when you chose Turtwig. I just shouted, "YES!" Torterra is definitely my favorite 4th-gen starter. I think they really nailed its design, making it look cool and fresh while maintaining the theme of the previous Grass-type starters (reptile with a plant attached). It also has a completely unique typing, which despite having a few glaring weaknesses, makes it one of the only Pokemon to resist both Ground and Rock attacks, and exploits the surprisingly great synergy between Grass and Ground attacks (Ground gets super-effective hits against everything that resists Grass except for Bug and Flying). In my opinion, the Turtwig line is the best Grass starter in the series (honorable mention to Sceptile who is better competitively and very nearly as cool).

A little addendum to the discussion about the starters' typing: It's a series first in that all three starters have a secondary typing on their final evolution. This opens up a whole new can-o-worms about how they relate to each other. While their main typing are rock-paper-scissor, the secondaries are not so clean-cut: - While Torterra retains its weakness to Fire, it has super-effective STAB against Infernape in Ground. And while it loses its Grass-Type advantage against Empoleon, it gains a new one with, again, Ground. - Infernape probably gains the most out of its evolution, as it retains its SE Fire STAB against Torterra, while it actually gains one with Fighting against Empoleon, while its Fire STAB becomes neutral. - Empoleon gets the short end of that stick, as Steel is quad-resisted by Infernape, and merely neutral on Torterra, while Water at least becomes neutral against Grass/Ground while remaining SE against Fire/Fighting.

Empoleon, however, resists a crap ton of stuff though. If I remember correctly, it's weak to fighting, ground, and electric. immune to poison, damaged normally by fire and grass (at least before XY), and resists everything else.

Merely neutral with a starter that has a type advantage is still better than being weak against a starter with a natural type advantage. Though even then Empoleon can learn Ice Beam. Empoleon+ Ice Beam= What Torrtera?

+Temple Of The Azure Flame I always just saw it as like how martial artists can break boards and stuff, they can just hit hard enough to break solid materials like Steel, Rocks, Ice, stuff like that. And that Fighting was strong against Normal because martial artists are just trained in how to take normal people down. But if you get hit by someone just headbutting you or something, it still hurts no matter what, so that's why Normal is neutral against Fighting. At least, that's how I justify it.

I just re bought pokemon platinum again to play for quaratine and man.... The second it started up it brought me to tears and just made me reminisce and oh man that music hits so hard. Ima replay one of my favorite pokemon games (this and HGSS, BW/BW2) and i needed this peace it brought me. All my games got stolen when i was younger and im not here for "woe is me" just feels good regaining lost memories that i cherished as a kid.... Hello, it's a few months short of 4 years since this episode. I just wanted to thank you for making this series! I played Platinum while watching, and did a challenge run: a team of electric-types. Watching this helped me stay sane during the long grinding sessions before the E4. Bertha and Cynthia's Garchomp were terrifying, so the level grinding was necessary... It's my least favorite thing in any Pokemon game, and it drives me crazy. Thank you for this series, as your commentary was a huge help as a distraction from the boring leveling up. I think gen 5 (black and white) is soon going to be the "lost" generation if they continue with a 7th and 8th gen, or even further. It wasn't too memorable. They even made sequels, and it STILL doesn't really appeal. Every other generation just feels like it gave more to the series than the previous generations before them. But gen 5... meh.

Just leaving this comment here while I watch this series for the first time since it was being uploaded, in preparation for the Sinnoh remakes this year. Pearl was my first Pokémon game - I got it when I was in first grade, on Christmas of 2007. It is absolutely one of the most important video games in my life. I gave it away a few years later to a friend who I wanted to get into the series. I kinda regret it now, but it was a conscious decision so that's okay. I'll be able to relive the Sinnoh experience for the first time in years anyway - just a few months left...

That was Sceptile. It's one of the few Pokemon that ended up being hampered by the p/s split. It could have a moveset of Leaf Blade, Dragon Claw, Thunder Punch, and Crunch and it would be awesome but now a days, not really due to the fact it has high special attack stat but an eh attack stat and it's move pool is more physically based than specially based.

I kinda want to see a remake of gen 4 next year. If I'm not mistaken, by 2017, it will have been the 10th anniversary of gen 4 (almost 10 years already?! Jeez...). They haven't done anniversary releases for the remakes yet as far as I know. Besides, it's usually whenever a new handheld comes out that a Gen is remade (1-GBA, 2-DS, 3-3DS). So I think we'll get the Gen 4 remakes once Nintendo reveals the 3DS's successor. I think I get how you feel. Gen 2's my favorite generation for that same reason, and I have a little fondness for Gens 1 and 3 even though they're in 3rd and 2nd place respectively. I was 15 when Diamond and Pearl came out, but waited years to get them (I bought into the shoddy notion that I was kinda old to get the newer games/I wouldn't be able to get them). I stopped caring once I was a Senior in HS though and proceeded to play most of LeafGreen. Eventually, I played Diamond when I was 22-23 (after playing and beating some other games.)

They always remake the gens eventually. I think ORAS made Gen 3 better and beat out RSE though it didn't feel QUITE the same (but I don't really see this as a bad thing). That's how I feel about the Gen 1 and Gen 2 remakes too. Ranking the three so far, I say ORAS is the best so far. And this is coming from a long time Johto fan.
