It's heavily based on a Yokai, and its pokedex entry states that it burrows through rock to make its home. It's a strange strange creature, and Larry is also very strange in the context of Pokemon. He's a salaryman, a 'normal' person in a world of larger-than-life characters. He's as bizarre as Dudunsparce is.

Additionally him using both types is likely a reference to how Normal/Flying is the most abundant type combination for the Normal type, as well as the most common one overall for dual types with his signature Pokémon Staraptor being a Normal/Flying type and the only Pokémon he uses for both positions also likely alludes to this.

Especially Iono because GameFreak absolutely nailed being a streamer from having to worry about copyright to hoping for high viewership. Paldean Gym leaders are really underrated generally. Some like Larry and Grusha can be a real pain if you’re unprepared. Like SwSh, some other people cares about Gym Leaders and be the public of their fights, and they have jobs (like Unova ones), which nails their personality even more!

So basically what they've always done, at least since Gen 5. Gen 5 had leaders like Lanora who owned a library and her museum and Cilan and Co. who run a restaurant. Gen 6 had.....I honestly can't remember... Gen 7 had a lot of character, such as Ilima's history and Mina's artistry and future with Kanto. Gen 8 had Gordie and Melony, who had a difficult mother/son relationship in every aspect of their lives, Nessa is a professional model, and Avery/Klara are students working their way up to becoming official gym leaders with their own troubled history. And don't get me started on how much character PLA has. I'm just glad Game Freak is continuing making characters interesting and cool, instead of bland nobodies who just stand around.

Thinking back on it, a lot of gym leaders have jobs outside of being gym leaders. I gen 1, giovanni’s busy running team rocket, brock an misty are said to have occupations based on the anime, blaine’s a scientist, based on poke star studios in black and white, sabrina’s an actress and uh the rest of them I’m not really sure. In gen 2, the play on words in falkner’s name implies him to work as the job he’s punned after, Bugsy seems to be an etymologist, Chuck seems to be a martial arts instructor, and Jasmine has her whole shtick with the lighthouse. In gen 3, Roxxane’s a student I think, brawly runs an actual gym, wattson manages the electricty in mauville, Norman’s your dad, and Wallace is a model or something. In gen 4 Roark and Byron do mine things, Gardenia’s a gardener, Fantina does something with dance idk, Crasher Wake’s a wrestler, and Volkner’s a technician I think. From Gen 5 onwards it becomes pretty easy to tell if a major character has an occupation and whatnot.

It fits her Electric type. -Larry is just a normal generic salary man. -Kofu wanted to buy something from Hoenn, that is the region with most water in the game. -Ryme has a tenebrous outfit. -Tullip practiced yoga, which is a "sport" that plays with our mentals. -And Grusha was a snowboarder before.
