Red is probably one of my favorite legends in a video game. Throughout all of the games, he's mentioned, and he's usually treated by the community as a heroic legend. Even if you didn't beat him in G/S/C or is HGSS, you've still heard about him, as a celebrity in the Pokemon world. Even if you did beat him, up on Mt. Silver, you had a sort of equal level. One master to another. He's just...Great. Oh and Blue is there too.

I like the idea that red has selective mutism. He CAN speak occasionally, but only in some situations when he is calm and can concentrate. In pokemon masters he usually closes his eyes for a few seconds to concentrate before speaking. People with selective mutism can’t speak unless they are in specific situations they are comfortable in, so could be a reasonable diagnosis for Red.

Definitely not canon, but it's a nice headcanon I guess. The real reason is actually just the same reason that Link from The Legend of Zelda doesn't speak, it's just because silent protagonists are easier for the player to relate to and imagine themselves in the hero's shoes, like a self insert character in a way. The other Pokemon protagonists have canonically spoken in other forms of media but Red usually doesn't mostly just because him not speaking and being a silent protagonist has become an iconic part of his character that the fans have come to expect, so it would be weird for him to start speaking more normally, in the same way that it would be weird if Link started speaking normally since the players aren't used to something like that. That said however, we have seen Red speak before even outside of Pokemon Masters; I'm not sure if he speaks in the manga since I haven't read it, but I do know that he's the protagonist of the Pokemon Origins anime and he speaks a lot in that. I don't personally headcanon Red as being mute or selectively mute, but I guess I can see why others would, although it has been contradicted before by canon.

There's something about both this theme and the characters themselves which allow Red and Blue to be represented in such a different light that no other character seems to bring to the table. For those who played the Pokemon Games of Gen 1 to Gen 3 as kids, you'd probably get hit with a major wave of nostalgia with these characters... But for those who played, say, Gen 4 to Gen 6 as kids (such as me, who started at Gen 5), this is more like meeting a legend who is at a height you can only dream to achieve. Another comment in this video has stated this as well and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who feels this way. Red and Blue are the nostalgic companions of the old, and the heroic legends of the new.

Sun and Moon were actually my first ever Pokemon games, so when I got to the battle tree and met these two I thought nothing of them. And since back then I was inexperienced and I couldn't get to the top of the battle tree, I never saw them again. Coming back to the battle tree after playing Yellow, Platinum, White, (some of) Black 2, Y, Omega Ruby, and Shield, I know the whole story of Red and Blue and got to experience it myself in Yellow. So when I came back to Moon a couple weeks ago, I crushed the battle tree and when I got to Red, I found myself thinking, "This is going to be something else." Then the music started up and I was just blown away. This is such a good theme.
