After Pokemon Black and White released to great acclaim and some understandable backlash, many fans assumed it wouldn't be long until Game Freak released some sort of Pokemon Grey version that compiled both games onto one cartridge.
But to the surprise of almost the entire Pokemon community the studio doubled their efforts and released direct sequels called Pokemon Black and White 2 in 2012.
These games take place two years after Black and White and feature a brand new villain, more enigmatic storytelling and of course finally bring many Pokemon from previous generations back into the main campaign.
So do these sequels live up to the mighty expectations set by their predecessors, or did they just multiply generation 5's biggest flaws? Let's find out together in the in-depth review of Pokemon Black and White 2 for the Nintendo DS!

Long time no see!!! Sorry to everyone who’s been patiently waiting on this video and for me to upload again. Life sort of got away from me, and even though I’ve been streaming Pokémon Colosseum on my second channel for over a year now, I didn’t want to stream or upload on this channel until I fulfilled my promise and got this review out. My biggest issue was that I couldn’t just force this review out and cut corners. It had to live up to the expectations set by the Black and White review and I hope that it has! Anyways please enjoy this video and know that there will be Gen 6 and ORAS reviews eventually, it’s just obviously going to be a while! Oh and thank you for watching!!!

Yinyanyeow no. Gen 6 was lazy, you could see it in the gym battles, exp system, and dialogue. Lysandre was an over glorified Cyrus who basically had the same goal, destroy the world. Gen 7 had actual character growth, actual challenge, and actual story that made sense with its biggest flaw being its cut scenes taking up too much time. And I don’t know what you mean by light type? You mean fairy type Pokémon? They exist in gen 7 too. Gen 6 had no effort, they didn’t even get a direct follow up like everyone hoped. The game felt empty and derived and had zero to offer in terms of post game. It was literally main game, looker missions, and that’s it. ORAS were mostly copy n paste RSE with a few new features but they took the battle frontier away.

I think it's a bit unfair to blame it on a lack of effort on GF part. From what I understand the development time for modern day games are a lot higher than they were when the games were 2-D and they still have the same schedule, so the post game content is cut down. It's also kinda dubious how many people will actually enjoy the post game, as most people don't even finish the games they buy. I can think of a lot of other game franchises that had run into similar problems so I don't think it just has to do with Nintendo. If the anime is anything to go off of, it doesn't look like the people making the games are less passionate than before.

But man I was wrong. Not only does unova have some of the coolest pokemon, like haxorus, hydreigon, bisharp, excadril, volcarona, accelgor, excavalier, golurk, chandelure, scrafty but a storyline that only the best rom hacks can even compete with (though I didn't like how dirty it did alder)

I was one of those people. When I was younger, starting out high school and whatnot, I thought Black and White were some of the worst games. Didn't like anything about them. Not the music, not the pokemon, not the region, not the animated sprites; the only thing I'd give them was probably the story. I did always think B2W2 were pretty good, but they were stained with that painful smear of being linked to the originals, and being in a region and system I hated. I've had a strong change of heart on that. I regret all of the undeserved criticism I levied at these games, because I appreciate them so much these days. I replayed Black and White (technically the first time I played them legitimately) in 2019 and beat them in a weak. I found the experience more than enjoyable. Best games? No. Unfairly criticized by me several years prior? Definitely. I (fully) replayed Black 2 and White 2 for the first time since my very first playthrough of those games and it, along with a reassessment of the originals, has propelled Gen 5 to second place in my mind, only below Gen 4 -- a huge contributing factor being that Gen 5 only visits Unova whereas Gen 4 allows you to visit three different regions, with comparable amounts of content baked into it. I never would've thought that I'd think so highly of these games just a few years before. Maybe my nostalgia is just setting in. Maybe I've become more appreciative of things I couldn't recognize as a ten-year-old (which is what I was when Gen 5 came out). I nonetheless firmly believe that these games are some of the most solid in the series.

Great video. Just to add, you can go into Hugh's house at the end of the game and the sister will mention that the Leipard is still cold towards her but through time (or defeating the elite 4 multiple times) it will open its heart again and they will be best buds again. It's a small touch so I don't blame you for missing it but i think it wraps up the arc quite neatly.

I will say that I still think Generation 4 was the strongest generation overall. However, that's the emphasis on overall. In my opinion, Black and White 2 are bar none the best, most well crafted main series titles that the company has ever created. Every aspect is probably among the best the franchise has to offer, between the plot, the music, the nostalgic callbacks, and it managed to make Unova extremely fresh, quite the feat when you consider these were the second Unova titles in a row. From a setting, it's amazing, and the gameplay fits the bill as well. One of my absolute favorite things about Gen V were their special encounter mechanics, like rustling grass, dark grass, ripple spots, hidden grottos, and so on. You were able to hunt special Pokemon and it felt even more rewarding finding that rare Pokemon than it ever seems to nowadays. And of course, N's Pokemon were a rather unique inclusion that I wholeheartedly enjoyed as well. Standalone, the games are top notch, but when considered as a sequel, they become so much more. Black and White 2 are the best main series Pokemon has to offer, and I must say, if Explorers of Sky didn't exist, they'd likely be sitting on the throne as the peak of the franchise as a whole. They are that good.

One of the people in this facility mention something about how some Pokémon broke out of their facility. This is why you can catch non gen 5 mons in East Unova in Black/White. Ever since X and Y Pokémon has been an exercise in frustration, they can't have the same quality and content of games released 10 years ago, every generation is more barebones and while Gen 7 at least offered a good story, Gen 8 offers nothing in exchange for the culled content, and people keep relentlessly defending it

Aside from the massive amount of content that Gen 5 contained. They were the only Pokemon games that made me feel guilty once because of Team Plasma. There isn't any villain team as complex and sophisticated as them. Team Galactic came in second. Thus Gen 4 and Gen 5 was the peak of Game Freak.

x and y are basicly the worst kind of reboot. they had nothing to offer aside from a misused mechanic(megaevolution was meant to make weak pokemon stronger, but was almost exclusively used for already op pokemon in those games). and after that,welp...they tried a little bit,but still went on the "who cares?"-train. I wonder how much the series would be diffrent if they went out of their way to fix their mistake in a pokemon z.

B/W WAS controversial in its first year, but let’s be honest, no-one has ever had a real problem with BW2. Over time, as BW2 has aged incredibly well, more people began to to appreciate B/W. Likewise, sword and shield hasn’t really been controversial since release, it’s been universally hated, and unlike generation 5, which along with generation 4, was the peak of Pokémon, there is merit to disliking gen 8

Partially from sadness that something this perfect and beautiful may never be made again and also a thankful standpoint to GF that they put the time and effort to make something so amazing. I miss those days when I would laugh while playing these games with my brother as children, 1v1ing each other although i would almost always lose cuz i didn't understand typings as a 6-7 year old. To accidentally one shotting cobalion the first time i met him with a single razor shell from my over leveled lvl 80 samurott. This absolute masterpiece will always have a place in my heart and once I have kids of my own, I will show my children the absolute masterpiece I grew up with as a child. It doesn't have as clear or cutting edge graphics as possible today, but it was the best thing back then and dare i say, better than the games and graphics we have now.

Like,,,, cmon at least look at foongus and amoongus, they feel so much neater design wise than "exploding orb with eyes that looks like a pokeball" im probably just going on an angry tangent tho XD, i just really like gen 5 and dont think it deserves the hate it got. Little addendum: around 4:31 you say that there isn't a reason given as to why there's ~200 new Pokemon, but Bianca makes it clear that in the two years between BW and B2/W2, there was a mass migration. Okay, where do I start with this! First of all, this was an excellent, excellent review and I'm so grateful to people like you for giving Gen 5 the fair shot it so desperately needed and the appreciation that it more than deserves! They're, in my opinion, easily the best Generation we've had rivalled only by HG/SS in terms of content, features and love injected into every piece of the games. That said, there were a couple things I was looking forward to hearing about that you never covered and I just kinda want to bring up because they were part of what make B2W2 so fun to me and they're features that are sadly slept on. (Long comment incoming!) 1) This was the only one you mentioned but PokeStar Studios constantly gets clowned on and I have a hard time figuring out why. They were a battle based facility that gave the user rental Pokemon and specifications to follow in particular patterns which meant that you couldn't just brute force your way through anything. Furthermore, I feel like no one played past the first battle with Brycen Man. Pokestar studios offered a huge variety of movies and sequels to said movies that all had fascinating little storylines and gorgeous art attached to them. Off the top of my head, the few I remember are a Time Travel dystopia where your player is a scientist who gets transported to a future where bug Pokemon are the apex species and Humans are used in battle, A Gojira type film where robotic Tyranitars attack a city and your player is part of an Earth Defense team and a RomCom type scenario where your player and another actress are set up by your Pokemon. There's so much fun little gems slid into Pokestar Studios and I haven't even finished it all in my just about 2 years of playing the game. I will acquiesce that it is grindy and if you don't care for worldbuilding then it's probably a lost cause, but it's such a charming little feature that I can't help but think it sad that people don't really take the time to explore it. 2) Speaking of things in B2W2 that no one takes the time to dive into; JOIN AVENUE. It wasn't even mentioned in this video! Join Avenue is such a useful feature with so many amazing uses that it's kind of a shame that you didn't talk about it at all. Join Avenue helps to alleviate one of the other problems of the original BW by giving access to items from past games such as Berries and Fossils while also giving a plethora of items and services like shards, friendship raisers, stat raisers, egg hatcheries, hell even places to by things like Fresh Water and Moomoo Milk in huge, terrible quantites. I'm talking multiples of 36 and 48 and such! And for reduced prices! The Lottery makes a reappearance in Join Avenue and it's perfectly possible to get all of these features without using wi-fi connections because there's a daily amount of visitors to the Avenue that give you more than enough to have a full Avenue with unique products and services. Hell! Gym Leaders can even visit your Avenue! It was such a godsend and it eliminated the need to have both versions of the game for both Archen and Carracosta because it's entirely possible to get multiples of those fossils in the Box Collector's Shop. 3) While yes, they locked A Lot of Pokemon behind Post Game in B2W2, they also made available a lot of Pokemon that you couldn't originally get pre game in BW, most notable of these being Volcarona in Relic Castle which you can get as early as your first trip to Driftveil as well as finally, FINALLY being able to have a Zorua and eventually Zoroark on your team in a Gen 5 game without it being locked behind a wifi only event. There were also a lot more daily and timed events that weren't touched on such as improvements to the Big and Small Court battles and the items you can get, the weekly Hidden Ability Pokemon encounters on Route 4 and Undella Town--the former of which were ridiculous to obtain and evolve in the previous BW because of the late levels they were made available in those games. In the Post Game you can also battle Hugh every day while having access to many seasonal battles such as N's seasonal teams and encounters with the Shadow Triad in tournament style battle each month. 4) The last thing I think was sort of brushed over was the Medal Rally. One of the things that completing the Medal Rally requires is a Monotype and Solo run against the Elite Four with each of the 17 types of Pokemon. It's something that fully utilizes the sheer volume of Pokemon made available to you in this new crazy Neo-Unova and it forces players to move outside of their comfort zone and actually build teams capable of handling the Unova Elite Four and their varied tactics. The Unovan Elite 4 Post Game is terrifying and on Challenge Mode, even more so and taking on the Medal Rally ultimately ends in you coming upon this challenge and it leads to you really appreciating the variety given to you in the game. It's also, honestly, the only time I've played Pokemon and legitimately worried for my life when going up against the Elite 4 and Champion. These Medals won't come easy and the E4 has a lot of nasty things they can do if you're not prepared for them. In the end, I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy the review--I really did love it!-- I just think it's a bit disingenuous to say that it's an in-depth review and then flat out ignore, brush over or skip features that were implemented in the game. Little things like the Habitat Dex and areas like the revamped Abyssal Ruins are all part of what makes this game as robust and satisfying as they are and it really doesn't do any one any favours when a definitive review doesn't truly touch on everything the game has to offer. Once again, loved your review and will be keeping my ears open for Gen 6! You've got yourself a new subscriber!

Originally I was adamant that Gen 4 was the best Gen we got. I liked 5 as well, but it just wasn’t the cream of the crop. During the past 4 months or so I’ve played Omega Ruby, Platinum, Soul Silver, and Black 2. And Black 2 to me was by far the funnest, and most content packed game. Gen 5 was the peak of Pokémon, and it unfortunately hasn’t recaptured that feeling since. X and Y were laughably easy. ORAS follow suit (which sucks because Gen 3 was my second favorite). Gen 7 was easy and boring to me. I hate the argument that games were always easy, and we only think the new games are easy because we are older and understand more. That’s just incorrect. I’ve understood for a long time and even replaying today the older Gens hold the same challenges as before.
