Also, if you were able to use duplication glitches, then you must've still been on version 1.1.3 or earlier. Awesome. Also, after I watched your other A button challenge on Gen. 1 a couple months ago, I decided to try going through Pokémon Silver with that challenge. I ran into a few snags along the way, but just recently finished it, winning over Red, with my level 71 Fearow's Return! It took a few tries before I stopped getting RNG screwed by certain things, but it did get the job done! (Leveling up a bit more, maybe to around 75, would've made it more consistent, but I got the win on one of my attempts at 71, so there we go.) My main team (these four are at level 71): -Feraligatr (My Starter. Moves: Surf, Ice Punch, Return, Bite.) -Kenya the Fearow (Gift from the guy in the guard station north of Goldenrod. Moves: Return, Drill Peck, Pursuit, Fly.) -Espeon (Gift Eevee from Bill in Goldenrod after meeting him in Ecruteak. Moves: Psybeam, Psychic, Bite, Headbutt.) -Dragonite (Purchased as a Dratini at the Game Corner for 2100 coins. Moves: Wing Attack, Waterfall, Fire Blast, Outrage.) ...And, I also have Togetic (Togepi egg gift in Violet City) and Sandslash (Purchased as a Sandshrew at the Game Corner for 700 coins) serving as HM slaves, but they never fought seriously, though I did get them evolved via Exp. Share just for the heck of it. Oh, and amazingly, I got the Pokérus early on during this run! I bought an Abra at the Game Corner for 200 coins and spread it to that then deposited it in a box to ensure I would always have a way to spread it to my other team members as I got them. That Abra is still deposited with its contagious Pokérus at this time.

@@ImportedCheese -Well, the Sturdy ability only stops the dedicated one-hit KO moves (like Fissure and Horn Drill) in this game. It wasn't until Gen. 5 (Black and White) when Sturdy allowed a full-HP Pokémon to survive almost any attack with 1 HP.- EDIT: Never mind. I forgot this was the remakes where Sturdy does indeed have its updated better function. That's a brain fart on my end.

Metal Burst actually would've done like nothing, because it's not a combination of Counter and Mirror Coat. It seems like it should be, because that would be vaguely usable, but instead it's a Steel-type physical attack with higher base power than you were attacked with... off of Bastiodon's pitiful Attack.

Considering it's always worked like this, the true answer is simple. The opponent merely had at least 50% more max HP than you. That's all it takes for the retaliatory hit to look weaker than the initial hit. Do you remember what you were using? Perhaps maybe what the opponent was using, too?
