I can't stand when someone uses the term "Pokemon Clone/Ripoff" unironically because historically it almost always damages the reputation of whatever it's being applied to.

If you take a closer look at Pokémon it really does some flaws that are often overlooked because it came out first and is popular. They have literal god like monsters that are caught by children. Not to mention that the humans are the dominant species while their monster friends spend most of their time in their poke balls.

This happens in any genre that gets popular. Eventually, they get their own genre name. For example, every fps used to just be a "doom clonse." Every platform fighter used to be a "smash clone." Eventually a name sticks and people start using that instead.

As a Digimon fan, I remember how, as a kid, people used to brush off other monster taming series, like Digimon, as "knockoff's" and viewed pokemon's dominance as indefinite. But times have change. Now that monster taming games exist that rival if not dwarf pokemon in terms of quality, its only a matter of time before the pokemon empire crumbles. Its only inevitable. All empires fall eventually, its only a matter of time and circumstances.

I used to be a Pokémon fanboy and dissed Digimon. Eventually, I warmed up to the franchise a couple of years later after watching a few episodes of the anime and even played a couple of PS1 games of it and eventually enjoyed Monster Rancher as well. Recently, I started to enjoy Pokémon games less and went on to try out Nexomon games, Monster Sanctuary, and Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition on my Switch. Also, I can't wait for the new Dragon Quest Monsters game.

The more close minded individual Pokemon fan from my experience won't say squat when you say Pokemon itself is a shallow knockoff of Dragon Quest 5. Reminder Yo-Kai Watch was never marketed as a "Pokemon Killer", only Viz said that and many got needlessly angry about that. Also there was that NintendoLife review that spent an entire review talking about the history of Pokemon and saying Pokemon was a better game on a review for Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition and some users acting like Digimon on a Nintendo console is forbidden as if that didn't already happen back in the DS era. Meanwhile, they never said a thing similar to that when they made articles about Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland GBC or Yo-Kai Watch Y-Academy on Switch. Both games are easily a way better game when looked at from a more objective standpoint in terms of content and quality. I think the best thing we can do is just continue to support and spread love for other games and still remain true to our own thoughts on Pokemon or any game we love or play and treat others we talk to as individuals and ignore the individuals that insist on spouting ignorance.

I remember when the only big monster taming game announcements were just Temtem and Kindred Fates really. I can’t even count how many we have now all with their own unique twist and gameplay. It’s kind of hard to call these games “clones” now, since they don’t even feel like anything Pokémon is doing. Alas, it won’t change the perception of those who are stubborn haha. There’s a reason why KF had to put in its FAQ about the chance of TPC/Nintendo/GF trying to issue a DMCA or a C&D order. It’s sad that it even has to be mentioned, but most people would see KF that way otherwise.

One of the reasons I think people have trouble separating Pokémon with monster tamer games is when the game/monsters have “mon” in the name like: Nexomon, Geomon, Buddymon. They just read “mon” in the name and think “Pokémon clone/ripoff” not knowing it’s combining monster with another word. We monster tamer fans can separate it but they just instantly link it to Pokémon and Digimon because they were the first they played in that genre most likely.

Games in a genre merit comparison because they let us experiment to see what can and can't work. Look at platformer games. We can compare numerous games in that genre to each other and can fairly say games like Sonic 06 or Sonic Forces just don't work while games like Wario Land, Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong Country, Spyro and Crash do work and can all stand out from each other regardless.

Sidenote, as a viewer not familiar with most of the games you cover (even after watching them for several weeks). I still cant tell which game is which by just style sometimes. If you could put the name of the game in the corner when gameplay is being shown it would go a long way I think. Sometimes I really like the design of a particular monster but have no idea which game it came from, then try to figure out which art style it most closely matches or something. It would be easier if all these games had fleshed out wikis or databases like serebii. and maybe they do and i just dont know where they are... Monster Sanctuary actually has a really good database, but some like nexomon are incomplete or confusing to navigate.

Ed, you raise valid points to consider, the majority of them sum up to "inspiration isn't plagiarism" and "we can disagree and still remain civil". I wanna raise ya an interesting case study of a niche subgenre build on derivative stylings: metroidvanias. Like em or hate em, many of them are built similarly with heavy derivative designs, but many of them today still find ways to scratch an itch for many as "their own thing" without getting scrutinized for their roots. I very much dislike "rants" for their less civil nature but I agree with yours, especially given you kept it civil. I don't believe in absolutes or extremes because the world doesn't tailor itself into neat dichotomic boxes.

I don’t ever recall anyone saying that games were Pokémon clones and such, but I have seen people call games “Pokemon killers”, where people dive all in to games they believe will ruin Pokémon. Usually speaking this doesn’t work, as they’re playing the game cause of displeasure, then quickly drop it afterwards. The most recent case being Temtem, and another example is Yokai Watch, which ironically enough causes games to take a sharp dive in popularity, effectively “killing” these games instead of Pokémon. And I am talking in regards to coverage and massive popularity.

If you want to count each gen as one game, that is still 3 Gens in a row they have screwed up. This is a pattern that will only get worse. Delete Gamefreak and we get awesome games like Super Mystery Dungeon, Rangers, Colosseum, Snap, Pinball, and Trozeii. Add someone new to Dev, and Delete Ishihara, we'll probably get something better than just Remakes. Something ACTUALLY fresh and exciting for the franchise. I don't really mind the term itself, but I agree that it's a bad term to describe the genre, simply because it is usually used with a negative connotation (which makes no sense from a rational standpoint), and it's often not accurate, anyways. There are some problems with having a game genre tied to the most prominent of its first examples (I can't say *the* first, because there were "monster tamers" before Pokémon) A couple of GMTK videos delve into what I'm talking about in the paragraph below: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqmac4qXrryoZpo & kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWqpc2iIadyJpNE Most genres are originally called by this kind of a name when they are just starting out (Doom clones, Smash clones, etc.) There are some popular Genres today that still have this kind of a title (Roguelike & Soulslike) which cause some negative issues on the genre as a whole. Roguelike thankfully broke free of most of these issues (before Spelunky & Isaac, they used to all be very similar to the original rogue), but there are still some issues with the name (There is a group of "Roguelike Elitists" who like to disparage games that call themselves roguelikes for not being similar enough to Rogue). "Permadeath genre" or "Reset genre" would probably be more fitting names for the current state of the genre, but Roguelike is just so popular of a name, and those examples also have their own issues (Calling it permadeath might have restricted the creativity of developers to always thinking of the game as needing to have "permadeath", rather than something like Patch Quest's recall, if there were not already multiple examples of games that don't follow this.) I agree with you that Monster Taming is probably the best name for the genre. It's snappier than "Monster Controlling" & it more accurately describes the genre than "Creature Collecting" The whole genre should definitely not be called Pokémon clones, especially since that isn't even really accurate to many of them, but if it weren't for the negative connotations that that kind of a name drags with it, I wouldn't mind calling games like Nexomon or Coromon by that term, since it's pretty accurate.

It really gets to me especially how this is, like, the one sub-genre that gets this treatment more than anything else. I can't think of any other genre that gets this level of ire from the general public. Sure, abridged series got this treatment back when Naruto Abridged first premiered, but after a year or two, people finally eased up and realized LK didn't need to be the only abridger out there. There was a time when another animation studio couldn't make a hand-drawn musical without people mistaking it for Disney, but thanks to the Internet, that's not as big of an issue. And while FPS's used to be compared to Doom, it didn't take long for people to realize it was a genre. monster collection, on the other hand, is still seen by so many Pokemon purists as something only Pokemon is allowed to do, and it's frustrating. They seem to be easing up a little bit if only because gen 8 got them to finally realize that maybe trying something different isn't such a bad idea, but there are still tons of Pokemon fans out there who just can't accept that other options exist.

@@sonic-bb While first person shooters can easily innovate and have unique ideas, platform fighters/Smash clones tend to rely on their playerbase and competitive way too much. It further doesn't help that most Smash clones fall off in terms of popularity every few months due to oversaturation. Animal Crossing clones don't have this problem because they can be enjoyed entirely single-player, unlike Smash clones. Prior to the 2010s when indie Smash clones like Rivals of Aether and Brawl Out hit the scene, there were only a few platform fighter games and most did their own thing to avoid being deemed a Smash clone, PlayStation All Stars tried to do its own thing but its troubled development and poor execution certainly didn't help (it even caused its dev to shut down afterward).

When people refer to Digimon as a Pokemon clone, the argument is done, they lost, they have no knowledge of Digimon and it's history. Digimon is a masculine version of the Tamagotchi, the game where you just take care of a digital pet. The only thing they took from pokemon at most would be the ability to battle. The premise is completely different. Nah scratch that Digimon was more of a Toy than a game.

wow this channel is 100% worth the sub and ive seen more popular channels with far less integrity so you better slam that sub button you shameful bastards this guys amazing. Based on the creators obvious knowledge of the genre and INTEGRITY alone, to make videos JUST LIKE THIS ONE this creator earns my respect, likes subs all day. Ty for the content I have really enjoyed this channels Nexomon coverage especially! and the respect you show to the monster tamer genre as a whole bringing clarity to feelings we have all shared about the pokemon franchise as lifelong fans is also something I really appreciated about this one! It made me think of how very different devs are from one game to another as well. Temtem has (imo and its ok if you disagree) been a huge disappointment as has pokemon recent years. We were all starved for something new and some of us even found that thanks to creators like this one! I am for one very thankful to have found nexomon franchise and look forward to their 3rd game with baited breath. That said its also imo healthy competition for pokemon and while i surely will buy Pokemon Legends Arceus when it drops? I also cant wait for the next Nexomon games! So if anything i feel the diversity unifies and solidifies this videos point. We should get in a more integral habbit of calling these "Tamer Genre Games" not clones because what you find in games like nexomon is a unique experience you could damn well be missing out on over ignorance, bias and a lack of over all integrity (I can relate i was ignorant to my options until I found this channel). "By their logic Pokémon is a Digimon clone" Well, I mean, if you consider the fact that, pretty much every new mechanic pokémon adds into their games is something Digimon already did... Hell, you can find stuff like this as soon as Gen 2. But seriously, though, you see a lot of this stuff with games that get too popular, specially between nintendo fans. Now pretty much any game with large grasslands and glowing stones is a Breath of the Wild clone, even though I can't think of single gaming concept this title introduced. If Dragon Quest VIII was released today, I'm pretty sure they'd call that game a BotW clone too.

It's not really a bold statement, it's known fact for the people that followed both franchises. And not only Digimon, but MANY other games have done these and pretty much everything else pokémon does before them. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing that they take inspiration from other stuff, but don't come acting as if most of their mechanics are 'entirely original', that's just delusional. Pokémon is known for being a stagnant franchise and only doing things after they've been around for over a decade, if I had actually included the things other franchises did first, there would be almost nothing unique left about it, after all, not even the original game's concept was something that haven't been done before.

Digimon didn't came out after Pokemon, Digimon came out in the same year as Pokemon actually, but it wasn't called Digimon, it was called Digital Monster VPet Pendulum. There's no way either of those franchises is a rip-off of the other, because while Pokemon was all about collecting Monsters, Digimon was about taking care of a single monster and feeding it, cleaning it, like a tamagotchi etc. and no, Digimon isn't a rip off of Tamagotchi either, its from the same Dev. In Fact, its somewhat the successor to Tamagotchi, although tamagotchi never stopped production too.

I don't like stuff being called Pokemon clones, but when you say Monster Tamer the average guy might be like "what?" But when you say "It's kinda like pokemon" they understand that, because Pokemon is by far the most well known Monster tamer. It's just like how every single Metroidvania is called thag because it's an adventure platformer. Or how top down adventure games are just called Zelda clones. Honestly the only reason why RPGs are called that is because a popular source material is D&D, which calls itself an RPG...

Valkyrie Profile was a Pokemon clone. The Einherjar were your Pokemon and Lenneth herself was the pokeball. Now you'll never be able to get that thought out of your head. You're welcome. Jokes aside, I agree with Ed that we shouldn't trash an entire genre based on one game in it being both popular and long-established. Innovation in a genre will be encouraged with more titles in competition rather than having just one series dominating the whole thing. In my estimation, Game Freak has gotten complacent, with Dexit being the latest example of this. The lack of an in-game National Dex to fill doesn't bother me; in fact, I think that's been a positive change. What bothers me is the lack of gameplay support for the library of critters and moves that they've introduced over the years. Considering how many games they've made in the series and such backwards compatibility has been a series staple, they've imposed upon themselves an implicit responsibility to continue that tradition.

Pokemon is one of the biggest franchises and brands in the world. Its bigger than Star Wars or Marvel. Every new Pokemon Game sold about 15 Million Copys. Most video game companys are happy if their games sell a small fraction of that. Sadly most other monster collector games or franchises never got nearly as successful as pokemon. As a kid I loved the Digimon anime which was much better than the pokemon anime. But sadly not much of the other kids at my school cared about it. Many called Digimon a Pokemon clone. Which is just bullshit. The Animes are not even falling in the same Genres. Because Digimon is an Isekai where humans wonder to a fantasy world. While Pokemon plays completly in a fantasy world. Its the same with video games. I remember that I was very excited when the Spectrobes Video Game came out and loved it a lot. Then a good friend of me loughed at me and said "What you bought that game that said we gonna rip off Pokemon and gonna do the exectly same thing." I was kinda surprised by a statement like that. Because to me Spectrobes felt very different. You got your monsters by collecting fossils and the battles where action based not turn based. You cant tell me that this game tried to rip off Pokemon. Yeah they tried to capitalise on Pokemon Success. (But thats the same thing as when a new found footage film comes out and wants to become the new blair which project. But nobody calls every found footage film a blair which project ripp off.) That game had so many unique creative features. I had noticed so many similar reactions when you mention any monster collector game that is not Pokemon. That I kinda gave up on arguing with normal people about that. I even used Pokemon Clone as a description of some Monster Games, even trough I know that they are not, simply to convince a friend of buying a few of them, because I know he loves Pokemon a lot and want him to check out other games we would like to. I dont think that Monster collector games becoming more popular will change the opinion of the public that they are all Pokemon clones. Pokemon is such a big franchise that no other will soon come even close to its success. There a simply so many merchandising goods that you cant get Pokemon out of peoples heads even if the games are getting worse and worse. Every where you see people with a pokemon bag, pokemon t-shirt etc. But the indi games will get much more popularity. But before games like Nexomon or Temtem dont get their own anime adaptations they will be light years away of beating Pokemon. Calling any game a Pokemon killer sounds ridicolous to me. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises

See, this genre is EXTREMELY hard to innovate in. The big selling point of Pokemon is within its diversity of monsters/units to choose from. This isn't like gacha games where there's 100-200+ monsters/units/heroes with nat 5s/SSRs and some of these games would either go physical/magical or or earth/water/fire and light/dark viceversa. Pokemon has a ton of types which is also one of the big selling points. Can you imagine trying to cram 100-200 monsters that aren't just carbon copies/re-types of eachother in a NON-gacha game? There's a reason why there's been a lot of Souls-like games, Animal Crossing clones and Smash clones, but not Pokemon clones from indie devs. We're not talking about summoner action RPGs where you, the Summoner, can attack by themselves here.

Great video i want to start by saying im a huge pokemon fan iv played every one of them lol but i also love video games so i agree that just because a game is similar its not a rip off of another game that being said i recently played nexomon 1 and im not saying its a rip off but it has so many similarities that you cant completely deny it either dont get me wrong i liked nexomon and i probably will pick up the second one i just hope it dose some things different to make it its own game and another great example of a tamer game that’s different from pokémon is a game called jades cacoon for the ps1 and its wone of my favorites

Is it like when you say a platformer, you say mario clone, or RPG, a Dragon Quest clone, something like that?

Pokemon franchise is top on their game because there are youtuber who devoted for pokemon . Like they have their own series which promote even more which create big hypes and their games are very but that doesn't mean other are not good . The terms like Pokemon clone and other games are garbage which is toxic. If some games devs decide to I want to create my own unique game and you don't like it that is not defined fault that is how you see the game. Pokemon franchise they listen to their fans and that's why they love it
