** Trigger Warning for the Timmies, Kimmies, and Poindexters! **
Controversial video time! Queue the surprised Pikachu face! A Pokemon collector has a moment of enlightenment, creates on online post about it...and gets threatened with a ban! Ironically, he or she is 100% correct about the long term trajectory of most modern era mass produced collectibles...Pokemon included. Let's explore why I don't like most online collecting forums that cater to pop culture collectibles.

You seem to misunderstand quite a bit here. I'm the actual moderator who locked this thread (which was posted over a year ago, pretty strange you just dig it up now) and it was only locked because it was posted in the wrong section of the forum. The user was threatened with a ban because this was the third time they had not followed the rules. I anticipate a correction of course, so thank you in advance!

I wonder whether it is even accurate to classify modern era sealed Magic the Gathering boxes as "collectibles". I see them more as "consumable luxury items", much more similar to bottles of wine that to rare coins. People with money will open an expensive one to "treat themselves to something special", enjoy the cards for an evening, then throw them into a binder and not look at them again for years. That is why I tend to disagree with the negative sentiment regarding them. As long as the game is going strong (and it looks like lots of young people are entering continuously), there will be an attrition rate and demand. People who look at Magic the Gathering from a purely financial standpoint tend to forget that, aside from a collectible, it is actually an extremely fun and popular game that shows no signs of slowing down. Contrast that to a baseball card, or graded video game, or even a true antique, like a rare coin. These items have no utility beyond looking nice in a shelf. Magic cards are game pieces. Opening a booster box is an experience. Most "smart people" will point out that the best way to "invest" in Magic the Gathering is to go into vintage reserved list, because there is a limited supply. And coincidentally, that seems to be where all of the big money is currently going. Ironically, this is kind of a self-limiting process: The higher the prices get bid up, the less utility these cards have as game pieces. People like Rudy and his cohort have already effectively killed the Vintage and Legacy formats by making them unaffordable to nearly anyone. That means there is practically no place where you can actually play with your prized beta black lotus, and even if there were, would you feel comfortable carrying it around? So in other words, there is an inverse relationship between organic demand for reserved list cards and their price. I feel like that really places a ceiling on how high these cards can go. I hope Shawn reads, I'd be interested in his thoughts. I enjoy the channel a lot.

Great points and questions here. 1. I avoid Modern everything MTG. I don't have enough time to learn or follow a meta or manage thousands of modern cards. 2. Fun & popular game? Exactly. This is a speculative asset like Crypto that is actually fun. Buying and holding crypto isn't fun. My real estate investments are boring as hell. But they're also important! It's nice to have a fun/interesting asset in the portfolio. 3. As prices go up in Vintage RL and as someone that has a large position in these products, that's why playing games on stream has become so popular. You can play with anyone in the world on demand. So, yes, I agree with some of the sentiment, but there's also a solution. A second solution is to buy proxies, artist proofs, white-bordered, or cheaper versions of the cards for travel. 4. A ceiling on how high these cards can go? Since I don't have a crystal ball, my guess is that you cannot possible imagine the ceiling on Alpha & Arabian Nights cards just like people who held Honus Wagner and sold for $100,000 thought it was the top. Just saying you might be right that $500k for LEA Black Lotus 10/10 is the top ... but it also might not be. I remember watching Rudy's video on Bazaar of Bagdad going to $2k and thinking he was crazy ... now that's a bargain *shrug*.

@@vito lololol MtG is so perfect that it needs a constant stream of new content and meta changes (bans, rotations) in order to stay alive and interesting. It's kept alive artificially. It's on life support! Compare this to Go, Shogi and Chess. (Although, I would claim that there are better games than Chess. It's so popular thanks to its cultural and historical significance rather than the game itself. Chess960 is an improvement though.)

The moderator wasn’t censoring the individual, he was simply redirecting the individual to post on the proper thread to maintain some resemblance of organization and order within the forum. If you want a more accurate representation of market conversation on the forum you are referring to, I’d check out “the giant market thread”. Most people agree with the concept of the original post and it is echoed frequently.

I'm an active member of the forum being referenced, as well as a huge fan of your videos, Shawn. And while I wholeheartedly agree with the points the poster made, he wasn't shut down because of the points he was making -- the forum only allows market discussion in the designated market discussion thread and this user made a separate thread. I've made many of the same points that the referenced poster made and have never been banned/censored. Yes, there are many people on the forum who don't understand how collectibles markets function (and so think that modern product is even remotely investible). But there are also people who understand fundamentals and who are truly passionate about collecting those items that are organically collectible. Anyway, just a small correction. The rest of the video was on point, as usual. Keep it up!

While it's been proven (read through the comments below) that the user was NOT banned because of this viewpoint, it still rings true. I collect everything from comics to cards to games... but I've been doing so for 20 years, and know all about organic collectibility. While everyone else in the MTG world is spending a grand on a case of the hot new Collectors Boosters set, I'm buying up, cleaning up, and grading top-tier vintage Reserved List cards. While everyone else is buying boxloads of "limited edition" new games, I'm acquiring yet another CIB 1st print "Super Mario Bros" for NES. Sometimes it's hard to watch your content, as you frequently come across as a bit pompous, but I still thoroughly enjoy the fact that someone here on YT is running a non-hype-driven collectible channel. Sean I love your content, it's always very thought provoking. Just my 2 cents here, there is a difference between buying and holding every new product hoping it goes to the moon vs being selective and trying to make informed decisions about what to buy in those spaces. In order for modern era Magic cards for example to be worth nothing in the future, the game itself would have to be dead (which could happen). If in 20 more years, Magic is still around, still making products that actually sell, sealed sets from 2020 that were desired from the start could have a lot of potential. There are likely better investments that can be made, but it's not necessarily a hopeless endeavor. At the end of the day, the poster's words are an opinion, not fact, just like mine or anyone elses. The negative opinions are important, they help to show that people are in disagreement over the proposed outcome of the situation. In 20 years either that poster will be correct, or the investor that bought into some desired MTG products from 2020 will be correct. Ultimately it doesn't matter so long as the person buying isn't overextending. I tend to believe in the potential of certain pop culture items, but it's always nice to hear the opposite opinions as they're very important to consider. I think most people involved in collectibles understand the risks to some extent or another. You got pumpers telling you to buy everything, and you got naysayers telling you to buy none of it. People should just do what makes them happy and what they're comfortable with. I learn towards collecting trading card games simply because if they go to $0, you can still play a game with them. Gives them a form of inherent value if the owner actually likes the game.

Warehouses full of product doesn’t mean that the product is worthless - 100% of the total supply is not on offer 100% of the time. Some people are willing, due to human psychology, to hold onto dead inventory while they are underwater … hoping that the price will at least rise up to where they can exit at breakeven, instead of just cutting their losses (and selling at a loss).

As a dealer in this market I have found a lot of success. But I agree the long term prospects on a lot of this stuff is iffy. But buying below market and finding deals and then selling into hype definitely can be rewarding in the short term. But it’s not a long term play for sure.

I certainly agree that modern Pokemon will never appreciate at the same rate vintage does due to several reasons. I do wonder, however, if the growth of the collector base overtime would still allow for an albeit, much flatter, upward slope. I also think not all modern cards are made the same. Overall, I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone approach modern with an investing stance. Perhaps it would be better to collect for enjoyment, but also keep the possibility of growth in the back of your mind. That being said, I wouldn't really go near modern right now, the whole market needs to cool off a bit before I can feel okay about buying modern cards, even just for my binders lol.Couldn't have clicked this notification faster, hope you're well, Shawn!!

It's unfortunate to think that part of the reason for heavily manipulated markets could be because of the central banks in 2008 brought interest rates and credit risk to zero with their special, temporary - now permanent - measures. Zero percent interest rates for 12 years plus is the root cause maybe for all these other manipulated markets. The collectibles market also very much imo benefit from the echo chambers of the vast internet. This is so true... If the card companies don't start mass printing and kill off the self proclaimed collectors but actual flippers. Kids doesn't even have chance to buy cards... It's all adults hogging now.

I read a few comments here on the vid. Ya, I would need to have more info on the forum, particularly the thread, to understand why the mod would have that poster banned (other than silencing a person's opinion). But I don't disagree with the post.

So i completely understand and I've been investing in a way I think will be worth something in the future. I've invested in black labels pokemon cards and original dbs unopened boxes (first editions). I don't invest in PSA modern and I don't invest in singles, and I don't invest in most sealed modern except first edition DBS and cosmic eclipse (because there are many more great cards then just charizard).

I don’t think you understand the half of it. People are spending over 100k on rookies who haven’t even played a game. The amount of money being poured in modern basketball and football alone would make your head spine. Justin Herbert hasn’t even won a playoff game and has cards sell as if he won a super bowl and mvp.

@@ReservedInvestments I would be interested in see a video on your opinion people creating index’s on pop culture collectible comparing it to the stock market and using it a marketing tool to prevent people from selling when demand decreases. I believe card ladder for example show cards have declined less than stocks and real estate. But is seems misleading.

The one thing that's guaranteed is the hot collectible worth millions in 20 years time is something no one is thinking of hoarding today. Pokemon cards? I know people stacking boxes hoping to cash in for their retirement. How many people do you think are doing that after seeing people like Logan Paul pump the market in 2020?

Great video and agree. I’m in sports cards and find very little interest in modern cards unless they are numbered or inserts to guarantee rarirty. All the vintage sports cards boxes for the most part are opened so the finite number is known and I think interest in them grows thru time. However, if people stop collecting modern cards becuase they are worthless maybe less people are in the hobby which does not help at all. Its seems like a doubled edge sword ???

It is completely obvious that the author of the post has a rational point. I have always thought the "Market Discussion" threads on this forum as the largest garbage fire on the site as people have their own agendas to push. However, I completely disagree with your final point "....you just wanna be a knowledgeable collector? The first step in you're journey, is to get off forums like this". I am unsure why you dislike this forum so much. It is the largest compilation of information on Pokemon Cards, I believe, on the internet. The forum is where I gained extensive knowledge on actually rare Pokemon cards to a point where if you put any English or Japanese card in front of me I can tell you how the item was distributed and a rough estimate on its rarity. These sites have plenty of BS especially when opinions start flying out asses. But do not confuse or mislead people to believe the site is a cesspool and/or not a wealth of information.

This is actually true and this is one of the topics solemn talked about. Since i was a kid i really loved collecting and enjoying the artwork not even thinking if i could earn some of it one day. My point here is now i still want to collect and enjoy the artwork and as of now due to this people who are so called investors i can't even buy cards at a reasonable price. As of now the new booster boxes are so hyped because some would say "the price will be doubled or hundred fold someday" by this so called investors while they are hoarding. I personally don't care about the profit i only wanted to enjoy the new artworks and if possible i want to collect them and display, and yet i can't even buy it at a reasonable price because of the hoarder's backward mentality. There are some adults who truly do enjoy the hobby. Of PokéTubers specifically, JWittz, PTCGRadio, OmniPoke, Frosted Caribou, Super Duper Dani, and RealBreakingNate are the real deal. But they are exceptions, not the rule. Most are in it for the money, with some truly evil people (Gary King Pokémon, Collectibles Guru) involved.

I have quite I few people calling me dumb for not keeping my orders and for not hoarding them or flipping them right away on the secondary market. lol These people seriously need a rude awakening.

FUDsters have been using the same argument against crypto for years, and it has been proven wrong countless times. Pop culture collectibles are no different. Also, organic demand or lack thereof is irrelevant considering we have hyperefficient social media to infinitely sustain momentum.

@@ReservedInvestments fundamentals don't matter anymore, we have social media now to infinitely build momentum. We've seen what social media can do for shares of companies operating at massive losses, and for JPGs. Influencers tell people to buy, investors jump in, those initial investors become very rich, and their success inspires more people to get in on the action. Rinse, repeat. Thanks to the hyperefficient communication made possible by modern social media, these feedback loops can continue looping forever.
