I love that icecream is where people draw the line, I always pull out the same ole reliable "rock with arms was peak then yeah?"

For real though! Like there's so many good designs in the later Gens!

The designs are great. Sure, each gen has its bad apples (for example, Gen 5 had ducklett, literally just a duck, no uniqueness like other ducks, this one is just a duck) but most designs are really neat.

"Rock with Arms", "Ball with Eyes", "Toxic Sludge", "Seal with differently-spelled Name" - all 'Peak Pokémon Design', _all from Gen 1..._ ...the Bad Designs have been part of the Franchise all along - if anything, the attacks against Gen 5's designs are an indication of *Success,* as Unova's Pokémon _were Designed_ to have many parallels to *Kanto's original cast of 151,* right down to _their sometimes unoriginally thought-out premises!_

Oh wow I didn't know about that last bit! Really cool that they did that though, I can definitely see the parallels now that you've told me this!

@@isyaboiskinny The Idea with the Pokémon in _Pokémon Black and White_ was that the Unova Region was being touted as *a Completely New Pokémon Experience* - and to round it all off, _150 All-New Pokémon Species would be created_ to fill Unova's Regional Pokédex, without any from Older Generations showing until Post-Game. *This* was why they originally enlisted the _New Designers like James Turner to begin with_ - they needed to produce a Kanto's worth of Pokémon Designs *in the same Three-Year Timeframe as any other new Game!* While all the Gen 5 Designs were quite fine, _The Pokémon Company_ realized a problem with having *a Regional Dex of nothing but new Pokémon: the Early Competitive Battling Scene.* As each new Generation enters into the Scene, there's at least One Season where _only that Region's Pokémon may be used Competitively_ - this meant a totally Fresh Metagame, with *every Pokémon being potentially viable,* but it was also *a scary prospect for Veteran Players* because they had _no older Pokémon to fall back on._ So TPC wanted _Game Freak_ to include Pokémon that could fill _similar Roles and Strategies to existing Mainstays from Previous Generations_ - this is why so many Gen 5 Designs are seen as *simply Rehashes of Existing ones: Game Freak was forced to make them like that!* In the End, most Gen 5 Pokémon _only found Competitive Use in that First Season,_ being substituted for the Pokémon that they were trying to Emulate once it became Legal again. Certain Pokémon found their own Niches *where they were a clear Upgrade - Amoongus' Bulk* made it a better _Spore_ User than *Parasect and Breloom,* for instance. But a majority just got thrown to the wayside once that Initial Season was over... Between that and _TPC's need to invoke the OG into every new game,_ way too many Pokémon slots were taken up with what seemed like *'knock-offs of Earlier-Gen Pokémon'* - and once Players got their hands on the Games, many were quick to point this Fact out! A lot of fans pointed out _just how Few_ of Unova's Pokémon actually had Original Designs, and *weren't just retreads of their Previous ones* - and alongside a well-made, but mostly Forgettable Region, Generation 5 _didn't get off to a great Start..._

@@isyaboiskinny That's fair - I don't expect everyone to have the same opinions on Pokemon as me but it still sucks when people badmouth the ones I like haha (I'm even a Bruxish fan)

Problem isn't design for me, I like a lot of the new pokemon and their designs, for me, the biggest issue is the sprites. Back then all the sprites seemed to have so much personality and the sprites seemed lively and fun, but now they kinda just stand there, and sway a little...maybe. Some just literally stand there. It could be nostalgia but I just miss how lively they made each pokemon feel and the uniqueness of the sprites, the gen 5 sprites especially had fun movements and stances, but in new games most of them stand there and that's kinda it. Any personality they do get is in other little side stuff for the games, but they don't feel lively in battle anymore.
@isyaboiskinny Жыл бұрын
Yeah I get what you mean, ever since the shift to 3D the sprites haven't felt quite the same, some of them changing more drastically than others (like purrloin going bipedal, which I still don't get). A bit more liveliness would be great to see, but I don't think we'll be getting that back unfortunately. But we can always hope!
