As for the Tate & Lisa fight; it’s not that they have their Pokémon divided 3 to 1, the game actually handles the trainer class as a single trailer (whose name is TATE&LISA) that has 4 Pokémon. The battle is set as a double battle, so they send out 2/4 pokemon at a time, just like you do. The sprite is also a single sprite, to give the illusion you’re fighting two trainers at once. Under normal circumstances, the Pokémon being split over the two trainers only occurs in double battles from gen IV forwards. In gen 3 (not sure of this; it happens in gen 4 for certain) it only happens if 2 individual trainers were to see you at the exact same time, as they are individual entities instead of a single trainer pretending to be two So yeah, Tate and Lisa (as well as the trainer classes such as Twins) are treated as a single person just happening to do a double battle by the game

I think what happened with the Shedinja having no ability was just the second ability of Shedinja, which doesn't exist. You must've had a pokemon that had its second ability (for example Azumaril having Huge Power, which is the second ability, and Thick Fat being the first), therefore after randomizing, the pokemon still has its second ability, and if it doesn't exist, it has no ability.

That Tate & Liza fight hit home hard, that was the only point I really struggled in Emerald. Just a mix of bad starter choice and overlevelling it (Torchic), unfamiliarity with double battles, and about 7 hyper potions. Made me have to explicitly go out of my way for several hours just to catch an Absol. If there's one thing I can say nice about them, is hey, they taught me that Perish Song can be cancelled out by switching your pokemon out, so that's nice.
