I spent hours in pokemon leaf green in this cave wondering what the deal with this cave is. I was so certain there was a secret to it or a puzzle but no it was just classic pokemon nonsense. it is shocking to me this area essentially went unimplemented over the entire world

This era of pokemon was rather unique in how they had to find little ways to sneak every Johto pokemon somewhere just so you could complete the dex. A large part of the catchables in Colosseum and XD were from Johto as such. Its interesting how that never was as much of a problem forward with the gens after with the forward compatibility of GBA and NDS

I feel like it truly was a different era. It was neat seeing how extensively spread out the dex was throughout all the Gen 3 games. Nowadays they would be called shills for putting a "paywall" on the Pokedex.

@@ZombieBarioth Honestly, one thing that's always annoyed me a bit about Pokemon games is sometimes you literally can't complete your Pokedex since certain Pokemon are locked behind old special events or only obtainable through very outdated methods or by buying something else. It seems kinda lame for them to make it impossible sometimes for the player to completely finish the Pokedex.

A fun and more obscure fact: because Altering Cave was the only intended wild encounter for Shuckle, it is impossible to obtain Berry Juice in entire Gen 3, as it was only available as a wild Shuckle's held item

What? But you can catch Shuckle in the post-game Safari Zone extension in Emerald. It’s a Rock Smash encounter. Even this video mentions all the Altering Cave mons are found in that area, except for Smeargle, who’s in Artisan Cave.

Growing up I remember this place was a really popular playground rumor. People said Deoxys could be caught here or you could find Dittos here with their weird unique held item always attached. Wild stuff. Funny thing, I remember in the official English guide for Emerald, they don't actually tell you what the cave is for. It just says Zubat can be caught here and alludes to it being used for something else but never expands upon it. Feels like they were purposefully trying to start rumors even though they knew at that point it probably wasn't ever going to be used.

On the bright side, altering cave is a great spot to EV train pokemon for speed since Zubat gives 1 speed EV upon defeat and it's the only thing in the cave. So with macho brace+pokerus you can max out a pokemon's speed by massacreing 63 Zubats.

OH MY GOD! THIS IS THE CAVE! I never knew what the name of this cave was throughout the entirety of my childhood, but this is where I stumbled across my first shiny Zubat!!! I vividly remember the little guy and caught him in that sand area of that cave because of the stars and the fact that it was brown. Sad I sold all my pokemon games because I grew up. If this is in firered and leafgrean I am 1,000,000% going to this cave and shiny hunting to re-unite with him.

Lugia and Ho-oh are officially considered event-only Pokemon all the way up to Platinum. You can get the Diploma without ever needing a Gamecube.

My guess it's similar to the house in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald that used e-reader cards to fight opponents. There were some that were only released for FireRed/LeafGreen in Japan, and maybe that's why the game has boxes in the way since we never got them.

I find this funny because of the myth that you could link cables with emerald or Ruby and Sapphire and get a pokemon from the cave most kids weren't rich enough to have 2 gba and 2 games, or didn't have any friends. But it'd nice to see that there was a plan for it, I wonder if someone could mod the game to put in the cave to have the event but with rarer mons and higher shiny rates.

I'm actually pretty... RATHER sure it's activated by e-reader. I've caught these pokemon in altering cave. Edit: YES. Double-checked. I have the Japanese cards that activate this. I remember a couple of them. A Totodile, and Phanpy, I know I have more of them. This event isn't planned/scrapped, if you didn't have the cards, you didn't activate it.

there is a spanish fan game with real time fighting called pokemon reloaded that does something interesting with a cave inspired by that one, the cave has no pokemon that spawn on it but a rock type gym leader from I think Sihnnoh is in the cave and asks you to take him low level fossil pokemon from the fossils youve encountered accross the game, then after you give it to him youll be able to encounter those same fossil pokemon as encounters in the cave and if you give him a copy of each fossil he gives you a reward, the game is heavily recommended by me, it has pixel graphics, its own region, access to pokemon up to sun and moon, pixel graphics, real time combat, mega evolutions, its own gym leaders, league and evil team, access to the first 4 gen leagues as well as the story lines for all evil teams of said leagues, its own set of made up pokemom, AND it also has recently added an English translation (which is not the best but its pretty good for a feature that they are still trying). The only downside is that whenever the creator posts a new update the game files has to be downloaded again, loosing all of your previous content. to download the game youll have to go to a forum.by the creator and try to translate to find the section that has the download file for the game

When I was building my emerald rom hack, I discovered a warp point with no door or entrance in the side of a wall, when I put a door there it was a direct warp into groudons cave! I feel like it was a missed opportunity not to just put Johto in these games instead of trying to make Johto Pokemon appear on the Islands. Johto feels more like a post-game than something that needed its own remake. Fire Red and Leaf Green were really lackluster and getting that twist of having an entire new region to explore after the League would have been just as amazing the second time.

With Pokémon Emerald being entirely decompiled, it would be more than reasonable that a person could find a way to make it interact with something in game. By example, you could make the spawn in the cave related to the nature of the pokémon at the front of your party, or interact with which of the listed pokémon you do not have in the pokedex.

I didn’t fully realize the problem as a kid in the 90s-00s, but these people really sold kids games where the ultimate goal is completing your Pokédex, made a handful of Pokémon only accessible with access to other versions + hardware, and then consistently managed to make at least one Pokémon in each generation impossible to encounter legitimately for almost every player in the world. 😐 Early Access cash grab devs ain’t got shit on Gamefreak and Nintendo. They’ve been scamming kids into buying extra games and consoles just to 99% complete a single save file since ‘96 😂
