First Pokemon game for me: I got both Blue and Yellow for the same Christmas, along with my Pokemon Yellow Edition Game Boy Color. Which I still have. And it still works. And I will be buried with it when I die.

Was he allowed to load a save with the right Squirtle after his first attempt?

Was probably a backup just for the marathon so we didn't have to watch them reset a bunch for the right squirtle. Would not be ok for an actual speed run attempt though.

That’s what it seems. Standard for GDQ Pokémon runs to let runners have another console with proper save/rng ready.
