The people who made this game were geniuses. It was fun, the characters were well-crafted and weren't all static, and though it started out light-hearted, as the game progressed it got deeper and more meaningful, and the plot that followed was...just extraordinary. All the metaphors, like the sea of time (and the music was also one of the best parts of the game)...it was so powerful and well thought out. It was obvious that the producers took pride in creating a high-quality game. The real main character of this story was your partner. He/she had both an outer and inner quest, and as the story progressed, you helped your partner become more confident in their abilities and become more independent. It was a true hero's journey for your partner-through many trials, they developed the courage to protect what was important to them. I could honestly write multiple essays on this game. The game touched on deep subjects like existentialism, loss, and ethics that included sacrifice for the greater good. And the ending was, biased may I be, the most incredible ending to a video game that I have ever seen. For anyone that says this game is just for kids, they can't possibly understand the deeper themes that tie into it, the amount of thought that was put into each aspect of the game, or the sheer depth of the story and characters. All of this is my opinion, and thank you for creating such a wonderful game.

a lot of games have a character die at the end in a "tragic farewell" , its almost a trope now, but what made this game special is that it was one of the first games where it was YOU that was the one dying. It made this ending so strange and shocking, because, usually, with stories that feature sad deaths, usually everyone dies around you/the main character, but in here its you that gets to say that wise crackish speech of "never forget me" and seeing your friend grieve over you gives you a strong sense of empathy for the characters that few other games can truely create, and thats why this ending is simply magical.

One of the reasons the ending scene was so powerful and emotional for me was the fact that it's the first time in the entire game where your character actually speaks. After hours and hours, so many adventures and experiences, so many memories. You've finally saved the world, and now, you speak your first and last (kinda) words to your partner, as you're forced to say goodbye. Such an incredible moment. It's personally my most memorable moment of gaming. Edit: Another reason this is so emotionally tearing is the fact that it's not another character dying, it's you. And the main reason that's sad or emotional isn't because of selfishness or anything. The main reason this is so touching is the fact that you now see firsthand the effect you've had on the world, and you see how you fading away affects your partner. If it were your partner fading away, you're expected to be the one feeling the pain, but that feeling may not be felt by some people. Plus, they already gave you that opportunity with Grovyle. But when it's YOU disappearing, you're forced to watch as your partner breaks down in tears, you're forced to see the massive impact you've had on their life. That way, there's no way the player can just shrug it off and say it isn't emotional, because you clearly see the impact on those around you. The feeling isn't implied, it's directly displayed through your partner. I can honestly say I'm not sure they could've set it up any better than they did. TL;DR: gud ending

I think it's not just the powerful goodbye of your character, but you also get to see what your partner goes through. Remember that at this point, your partner is with you the entire time. They're basically your second character, the one that helps you venture through this Pokemon world. When your character says goodbye, you get to see the entire grieving of your partner. Regardless, they still honor your last wish because, well, they've been your partner for so long. But that beach scene hones in on the tragedy: their faithful partner is gone. Your character begging your partner to not forget is, in a way, the game begging you not to forget.

Grovyles existence is a paradox. Meaning the past cannot be changed without his existence, but with the past being changed he cannot exist. Therefore he warps space-time and is forced to exist so long as the conditions creating the future remain the same (ie. as long as you finish the WHOLE game and stabilize the new timeline) That’s why you can evolve post game-

This is first pokemon game I've ever finished, for the main story. And never in my lifetime did I expectvsuch a deep story to come of it. I think what got me more was this ending. Nothing will beat it. Because so many stories have an awesome character sacrifice themselves four you. But this game did something new. It hurt harder, seeing yourself fade from the screen. It would hurt to see your best friend leave your side in the end, but it hurts worse when your best friend ends up feeling the pain you'd feel. You bonded with them, and all you, as the player, want is for them to be happy. This ending hit me hard, and will probably hit me just as hard when I decide to play this again in the future. This game will forever be my favorite

Cause mystery dungeon has a more endearing story, and main installments really aren’t that endearing unless if you really love the Pokémon that are available. Let us all remember how our partner also believed that everything was going to be ok after this, how he believed there would be a happy ending, just for that to be taken away, the only true thing he fought for to be lost after everything was said and done, how f@cked up is that? You lose the only true thing you fought for just after the fight is over, when it’s all supposed to be ok now. Also, Dialga would’ve been a dick and not revived the player if your partner never returned to the beach, cause then no memories would’ve flooded back, and no feelings of loss would’ve torn the partner’s heart out.

***** Have you played PMD Red Rescue Team? It tops this one for not being the same after the ending.. In Red Rescue Team, after you come back, your partner suggests that you be able to switch up the leader of the team.... and from that point on, your partner never follows you around town, never says anything, and just acts like a normal recruit. Even your player does! The player and partner are removed completely from the story.. the player and partner aren't special anymore. that's why I was so thrilled with Explorers of Sky. When Chimecho told us about being able to switch team leaders, I began to feel very sad because I thought my partner would be taken from me again... But then she said "But there will still be dungeons that only and will be able to go into"(or something close to that). When I read that, I realized that they had fixed my main problem with the previous game! Your partner still comes with you everywhere in the world, but isn't forced to come to every dungeon except ones relevant to the plot. They still talk to you, they still are a part of the story with you, they're still special, and not like the other recruits. I understand how you feel, I became very attached to my characters as well.. but for me I just keep coming up with new adventures for them in my head, and enjoy the gameplay and music as I do it.
@jimshoe238510 жыл бұрын
Zichqec Yep. There was way too much ship tease between the Hero and Partner to have them suddenly forget the other existed. Come to think of it, every Mystery Dungeon game so far seems to favor them as a couple. The partners from EOS and GTI not being not being interested in Team Charm or Virizion when even the girls want them should say something. What I liked most about the ending's implications is this: Arceus saving Grovyle and co. by remaking the world for them implies the main timeline doesn't have a concrete future anymore. The bad future was guaranteed to occur since no pokemon knew what was causing the planet's paralysis and even the most hardened criminals refused to even touch a Time Gear. If Explorers continued beyond the Darkrai storyline, I wouldn't be surprised if the Dimensional Scream showed possible events that could occur in the future, instead of what will actually happen. It could have brought some interesting plot twists. Sorry about my rambling. ;d
@Zichqec10 жыл бұрын
Jim Shoe Don't worry about rambling, I love it. XD I think the reason they don't show any interest in Team Charm or Virizion is probably for the same reason that the main character(for the most part) does not talk. If the main character talks, it feels more like you're just controlling a puppet, but if they are silent, you can project yourself onto them. You can use your imagination to add any reactions or dialogue you want to make the character your own. By leaving things open, they allow you to freely change little parts of the story to however you want, while keeping the main plot mostly the same. I agree completely about the future. Since history was changed, we know for a fact that the planet will not be paralyzed, so we have no idea what will happen in the future. In fact, come to think of it, it kind of reminds me of Chrono Trigger. That's a really neat idea... The dimensional scream worked differently in the past and future(without any explanation.. XD), so why not work differently when there is no more concrete future? The player and partner blindly follow the dimensional scream because it was always accurate in the past, but now it only shows possibilities and would be very confusing until they figure it out. Although this raises a question.. the dimensional scream could show things that were about to happen in the future because it was set in stone, yes? well, the player coming to the past changed that. The player saw that Azurill was in danger, and rushed off with their partner and saved him. But this would change the future right? At least slightly, because Azurills life may have been drastically different if he had not been rescued. Sure, Drowzee was going to let him go, but the experience might have left him scarred forever. Maybe a better example would be the dimensional scream showing Grovyle attacking Azelf. If Grovyle was in the future that was set in stone, the things that had to happen, then why wasn't the planets paralysis being stopped a part of that? I'd better stop here before I get into a loop.. It's all so confusing when you start to time travel. What I think is that Dialga can bend time in such a way that it prevents small paradoxes and such from occurring, sort of how he brought the player back. Ahaha.. I think I got a bit carried away.. Sorry ^^' I'll stop here before I write an entire essay on this subject.. XD
@jimshoe238510 жыл бұрын
Zichqec You aren't getting carried away. I'm glad to see someone else remembers the game. The planet being paralyzed was guaranteed. Since time essentially quit flowing, what Groyvle and co. did was probably quite like that. Small actions the player took thanks to the Dimensional Scream did not alter the bad future significantly enough to erase any major pokemon from it, for instance. It also only shows fragments of events, rather than the big picture. Arceus saving the bad future's pokemon suggests there can be alternate timelines. Dialga reviving the hero and saying he entrusted the future to him/her hints at this as well. The partner gets a fleshed out personality in the PMD games, especially in Explorers. A good portion of the game's lines come from the partner. The hero is the one who remains silent, usually. The partner deciding to consider Dusknoir an enemy because the hero said so helped me like the pairing even more. It's sweet how much they trust each other. Then there's the fact they raise Manaphy as his parents. I usually don't care for shipping, but the idea of my Riolu and Vulpix having a happy ending where they get to determine their own fate and end up being a couple is sweet to me. Plus, if either of them settled down, I doubt it would be with any other pokemon. The Dimensional Scream only showing possible futures after the Time Crisis would help add more drama/suspense to a fanfic... assuming I ever get around to making one, that is. ;d I know I talk too much about things I like, but it's so nice to nerd out sometimes. XD

@@Lumbrax Like the conclusion of the story? Your partner is scarred, but there is beauty in the memories and in seeing the world you've saved. It is epic, if a bit energic, because at the end of the day you've saved everyone and peace is restored. It kinda turns your emotions from straight up sorrow to bitter pride. The switch in music tone also makes me think that lives moves on, which is both sad and good.

I beat Sky for the first time yesterday, and I cannot get over this ending. For those who don't know, I had this game for years. I played it a lot when I was a child and for eight long years I attempted to beat it until I kind of gave up. But I found it and played through it again and... I was lost in that feeling of OMFG I beat it that I didn't truly experience that heartbreak at the end. I was just so spent that I put my 3DS down after the credits, saved, and didn't even attempt the epilogue. I just had to experience the ending again. I think it would have had more impact if it was Françios and Lièyàn but I still teared up. Eight years of hardship. I can say it was worth spawning in all of those monster houses and being one shot by a not very effective crit. And I haven't even played the epilogue or evolved my Riolu or the Vulpix. For journeys done and many more on the way. Cheers!

What makes this scene hurt is the fact that your partner was a coward, always scared to face tough situations. After meeting you, they learn to be brave. You mean the world to them. For you to just disappear after saving the world without them knowing will crush their soul to broken pieces. The friendship you built after all this time…the two of your are soulmates, inseparable. The very best of friends who deserve the world.

This whole ending is sad as hell, but the part that fucks me up the most is that scene right before the credits when your partner basically breaks down crying on the beach, that’s some crippling level of depression kind of shit. Then the credits roll and your last thoughts of the game (before your character comes back) are imagining your partner living their life constantly depressed by the loss of their best friend

Isn’t it nice when you, the only thing your partner ever fought for, are taken from your partner just after everything is said and done, just before the happy ending should’ve rolled, and your partner had to have that torn from it just after the fighting was over? Who doesn’t love realizing the true extent of tragic pain? It gets even better once one realizes exactly how much Grovyle has lost, even losing you in a way, to have literally almost nothing except a you who doesn’t know him help out while another takes his place as your partner. Oh yeah, and then realizing that Dialga would’ve never brought you back if your partner didn’t visit the beach and fall apart. There are a lot of moments in this game that are present but hidden, and I love it.

I can't believe as a very old school Poke fan (when it first came out in the late 90s here in the USA and I remember playing and beating Pokemon Yellow for gameboy color when I was about 10 years old), I took up playing this Mystery Dungeon game on an emulator and actually bought the NDS cartridge a few days ago (I rarely buy games now that I'm older because I only stick to a certain that I've liked over the years), but then took a look at its ending today on KZbin because I knew it had a long storyline. This video basically explains why you, as the player and main hero of this Pokemon game, has so little dialogue in comparison to your partner from what I've seen on the game so far. The ending up to the credits from what I've seen from these videos, is sad as everyone says. I agree. But what makes me think of this part (before what happens after the credits), is heart-wounding sad and does it for me, is when your partner Pokemon character can't take the pain anymore after months of being separated from you and falls apart on the beach at the very end right before the credits..., because he/she truly loves you as their friend and you're gone from them... That is a truly priceless thing to see from a game like this and especially a Pokemon one, about real life when a loved one or close friend of yours, dies. Even if it does hurt. Talk about laying down one's life for a friend as written in the holy bible. People should think about things like this. I'm still gonna try and finish this game sometime soon and see what completely happens after the credits and not spoil that part to myself, as I'm really liking it so far and I have to say, out of all the Pokemon games that I've played in the last two decades, this is turning out to be the best, so far. I'm pretty sure it's going to hurt again if I make it to the very end of it, just before the credits. Seeing my own Poke partner fall apart because, I, the hero is gone from her. But I'm glad the creators who came up with the idea for Pokemon creatures actually BEING the characters in the Mystery Dungeon series, actually did so. Because I remember seeing the first episode of the TV show back in 2006 (this is what made me want to see this series games and trying Explorers of Sky in the first place because of this memory and what I had been reading), and I didn't think they would do something like this given the original concept of human Pokemon trainers capturing and training them. And who knows what was going through the creators minds when they made this Mystery Dungeon series games.

This is the game that really knocked a sense of existential dread into my young little brain and just absolutely *fucked me up* as a kid.
