Haha! Yeah, for this set especially buying a bunch of boxes didn’t end up being worth it. But that’s not always the case. The paldea master set is more expensive than I spent on it buying packs for example. Or close anyway. Just depends on the set! Plus it’s fun to open packs!

I have had multiple card guardian binders before without complaint, but in all honesty this one turned me off likely buying them in the future. The stitching is uneven on the pages so that a standard card sleeve is 1-2mm too long either in the top row or bottom row. I had to use perfect sleeves in the top row for all the first half of the binder, and in the bottom row for the back half of the binder, just to get the sleeved cards to fit. I’d recommend vault x personally. Never had that issue with their binders! Maybe I just got a bad one this go around from card guardian.

Awesome video! I'm still working on Paldea Evolved. I know you told me you bought singles, but I have found myself buying several singles. I think when I reached 60% completion, I started to buy singles because I spent about $600 already from single packs, several 3-booster packs bundle, multiple booster bundles, few build and battles, 3 etbs, and 1 booster box. I just kept getting duplicates, it was crazy. Hopefully when I move on to this set, it should be easier since it's a smaller set. If I have to buy packs, I am going for booster boxes. I was not cost effective with my approach for it, but Paldea Evolved is my first set after a 20 year hiatus. I'll take the lessons learned as stepping stones. Anyway, thank you again. This motivates me!

Oh definitely! From a pure cost standpoint singles are the way to go. You could complete Obsidian Flames for around $400 without buying a single pack just by getting everything on TCGplayer. But for me ripping packs is part of the fun. I preordered a full case for this set before it was really revealed it would be so sparse in secret rares, so I’ll probably be a little more careful in the future when doing that. But even if it wasn’t a “great” set… I still got to open 300+ packs of Pokémon cards. That’s always fun haha. Best of luck my friend!

The binders do get expensive, yeah. Individually you think it’s not bad because they’re $25-$30 a pop… then you’ve got 30 of them and realize you’ve spent nearly $1000 on binders haha. I use normal penny sleeves for most cards, and these sturdier sleeves linked below for any secret rares/more valuable cards! They’re the cheapest on Amazon that I’ve found and I’ve ordered them like 5 times now and every time they’re great quality! I’m lucky on storage. My brother is a woodworker and built me a custom shelf and will build more as I need more space. I’ll show that off in a future video sometime! a.co/d/gJ5sVgJ

yeah im seeing how these random ex's throw off the pattern...how many extra pages do you think would be by the end if you combined the regular and reverse holo card into one binder slot? (so you save a lot of space but might have too much). just based off your experience here collecting master sets really nice master set!!

If you combine the reverse holos into the regular slot, which a lot of people do, you definitely don’t need a 12 slot binder. The normal 9 slot binder should fit most sets out there, if not all!

Just wondering for the rare cards do you put in top loaders to keep it safe? So do you have like duplicates for those that are in top loaders? I'm wanting to do master set but for the rare cards I would like to keep in top loaders but still keep within the sequence, if that makes sense

I keep everything in binders. Top loaders don’t fit in these binders but there are top loader binders! None large enough to fit a full master set but still, you can always do a set across multiple binders if desired!

@Pokelou502 how do you store your top loaders? For the master set you keep every card in one Binder, which makes sense. But for the rare cards that you want keep safer do you taken them out of the master set Binder or do you have doubles? Sorry, hopefully that makes sense

If I have any doubles of cards outside of the master set binders, even the rare ones, I usually put them right into my trade binder! I do have stacks and stacks of top loaders and if I were selling or trading a particularly expensive card I would put it in a top loader for whoever was getting it, but for myself everything stays in a binder. Bulk I put in the normal white cardboard trading card storage boxes!

Watching your master set videos is motivating me to start master sets. I'm currently working on Lorcana 1st Chapter, but might scoot over to Pokemon since Lorcana cards are still pretty pricy.

Nice! If you have the same nostalgia for Pokemon, I recommend it. They have the science of “just enough hits” and hit variety down. It’s very satisfying opening Pokemon, and I rarely feel cheated from it. I hope Lorcana adds lots more secret rare types in the future.

For sure. For Pokemon and any TCG at that matter, you can always sell the duplicates at trade events or online or at shows if you want to be a vendor. Some could get graded, if the grading costs are worth it. I find grading to be worth it if it will get the card to be valued at $50-$80 depending on the grade and demand and market.

im new to collecting full master sets, so please forgive my ignorance... you count the common, and the reverse holo, what about regular holo? can they take the place of a common card ? thanks for any help.

If I’m understanding you correctly, all of the common, uncommon, and regular rares will have a reverse holo counterpart. In the Scarlet and Violet era, all rare cards have been holo. But in Sword and Shield for example, there were non-holo rares and holo rares. Either way though they’ll have a reverse holo as well! None of the secret rare cards will have alternate holo patterns or anything like that. Essentially, in all sets everything from the grass Pokemon up to the trainer cards should have two versions at least, except the EX cards.

@@Pokelou502 thank you for the answer, what i guess i was asking with an example is this...card 062 Palafin has a normal card, a holo, and a reverse? and if so need all 3 versions for the master set? or are there only 2 versions of those cards and not 3? The reason i ask is becasue for this card example you have the holo and reverse holo, so was there not a normal version non holo? Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the noob help lol

Oh, gotcha! Check out my scarlet and violet video for a more in depth reason why I think this way about them, but… For me, I consider the base “master set” everything with all variants that can be pulled from packs. So the normal palafin I don’t put in the binder except in the back if I got it from a build and battle box when trying to get the promo cards, since it can’t be pulled from a pack. But yes, a lot of people consider that part of the master set. Bulbapedia lists them under alternate cards or something like that, so I don’t usually count them. I always end up with a bunch of them though and put them in the back of the binder. Just be aware that list doesn’t stop growing for a long time, since alternate holo patterns and non holo versions of rares can release years later for a set.

I pulled 3 sir charizards out the 6 booster boxes I had gotten. Golds legit only pulled 1 artazon and 1 fire energy. So I ended up picking up the few stuff was missing but definitely is a lot of bulk set onto or of what was pretty cool.

@Pokelou502 HELP - I have non holo cards for Toxtricity, Palafin and Togekiss when they should just have Holo and reverse, how is this possible and is it a misprint

Not a misprint! Those came from the build and battle boxes, with the included decks. In those boxes they don’t include holos, so any rates will be non holo there. You’re free to include them in your master set if you’d like! I always put mine in the back of the binder as “extra” cards, since you can’t pull them from packs but often you end up with them from buying build and battle boxes!

That’s actually a good example of why I don’t consider cards like that part of the master set. There are lists of all “additional” cards on bulbapedia for example, and if I DO buy the product they are in, I’ll put those holos in the back of the binder. But they release a month after the main set, can’t be pulled from packs, and there can be other promo sets with alternate cards released up to a year after a set has released sometimes. That additional cards list keeps climbing for a long time. My logic is this. If I consider those a necessary part of a master set, ALL alternate cards have to be as well. And that can include Australian exclusives, staff promos, the play series cards, or even like Halloween cards or McDonald’s cards with obsidian flames art or something like that in the future. While I do end up with a lot of the alternate cards (check out my scarlet and violet base set video), I also am not too keen on paying like $30 for a reverse holo Arven regionals stamp promo etc etc. I can always add more to the binders in the future if I change my mind, but generally to “master set” for me is to get all cards that can be pulled from packs, plus the prerelease promos because those have the logo on them and for some reason I’d feel like I was skipping something if I didn’t get ‘em!

I was getting annoyed that a handful of people scooped up all the promos from best buy and GameStop and selling them at 20-30 dollars each on eBay but if they are not truly required for it to be a master set that's great news. @@Pokelou502

@@Pokelou502 oh Scarlet Violet base is a different beast entirely... I only came up with the idea of leaving space for variants shortly after Paldea because it suddenly dawned on me 'why not?' Scarlet Violet base itself I would probably say it's safer to safe all the variants that will be printed 1 year into the next series (Gen 10) and then consolidating the entire binder in order and hopefully they make an awkward sized binder like....550 pockets or something because with all the variants coming out the 480's won't be enough at all... - McDonalds Reprints - Halloween Bundles (2024 & 2025 - Possibly 2026) - Advent Calender (2024 & 2025 - Possibly 2026) - Triple and Double Premium Checklane blisters (Yerp...galaxy holos) Just to name a few. If you wanna go all the way there's the Play! Prize Packs Series 3 and onwards to consider and whatever exclusives Gamestop, Bestbuy, EB Games and Costco / Walmart / Amazon have to offer....there's too much xD

I'm confused about the cards you mention in yours that come from build and battle sets because they aren't the same ones on the back page of Pokelou502's which are the ones shown in the ETB Player's guide. Specifically the Toxtricity which isn't shown in the guide at all, and the Togekiss which is shown with a different art than the card in your binder? I haven't bought any build and battles yet, but am close to completing with just booster boxes and etb's and starting to lay out my binder.

​@@kevinbohrer274 right! So the ones on the back of Pokelou's binder are still from the Build and Battle Boxes. These are the Promos that come with the sealed decks inside those boxes to which there are 4 and have a black star promo logo where the set name and number would usually be. I keep these ones in a separate promo master set binder personally. So the ones you see that are in my set where for example you'll see the Togekiss or Toxtricity - These are Star holos as such will only come as a holofoil and reverse holo - the extra non holo card are from those same decks that you unwrap to get the promos and are considered Build and Battle exclusives and some cases you can find them as non holos in the Battle League Decks. Hope that clears up any confusion :)

The energy cards aren’t a numbered part of the set. Although obviously I have thousands of energy cards lol. I just don’t keep them in the master set binder because they’re generic scarlet and violet era cards, not for example obsidian flames set cards.

I mention this point in my other master set videos I see what you’re saying, but for me (and most others) a master set is just one of every card that can be pulled in the packs. I’d consider a GameStop or Best Buy or whatever card more of a promo or alternate card. If every alternate printing (for example non holo versions of rares, alternate holo pattern rates, etc) counted towards a master set, you would never be able to complete it because sometimes those cards release years later. There are still blister pack promos coming out with alternate holo sword and shield cards. Also, if you’re SELLING a “master set” what I’ve got here is the required set. Some might have alternate cards or GameStop promos or whatever, but they’re generally just extras and not needed to be considered a master set for the purposes of selling to someone. Long way of saying if that’s what you consider a master set, cool! But remember there are Australian exclusive stamped promos, Japanese cards that occasionally get excluded, staff versions of all promos, blah blah blah. Basically if you want it to be endless for each set, it can be! Happy collecting!

I keep all my bulk sorted in those cardboard boxes that card shops sell. I’ve got a buddy who also collects complete sets so I’ll either let him sort through them and pull what he needs, or just sit on them. Not quite sure what to do with it all haha. Maybe I’ll trade it all in someday. I have quite a few full boxes of bulk.
