Clefairy was supposed to be Ash’s starter, but it didn’t test well during screenings of the anime as well as pikachu. The move “metronome” was supposed to be used for comedic effect, but this got recycled for Misty’a togepi

It was Clefairy. It was one of the first pokemon designed along with Clefable. There is also the rabbit hole of Gengar being designed as Clefable's shadow or Cubone being a baby Kangaskhan.

It honestly could have been either, clefairy was originally gonna be the mascot but jigglypuff became so popular it ended up being a sort of counterpart to pikachu in smash bros. so im really not sure lol but I'm leaning towards clefairy bc of its history and the references in LGPE

The additional evidence to prove that it may have been Jigglypuff, is the fact that Pokémon yellow and pink were in development at the same time as the first Super Smash Brothers which featured Pikachu and Jigglypuff as the only two playable Pokémon.

Unless the research shows that the game was close to deadline and they wanted to add them in last-second and so instead of making Clefairy which would have to be coded from the ground up, they copy/pasted Kirby's already-existent code and changed the animations to make it look like Jigglypuff since it would've been easier and would take less time.

But that isn't really the best evidence because Jigglypuff is iconic in the anime. Though, it's hard to know. But out of both, Clefairy is really probably more likely because of all of this evidence that the video had. Though, it's good evidence and an interesting fact though. Jigglypuff is also a Pokemon that non-Nintendo and non-Pokemon fans (or anybody sometimes) would confuse with... What's he called? Oh yeah, Kirby! Even though that isn't too relevant.

@@eglol What about the fact Jigglypuff interestingly enough for Pokemon Blue is featured in the intro taking Nidoran's place in battling Gengar? And of course we know Blue is the upgraded version of Japan's Red/Green. One could make the case that for the next upgraded versions Yellow and the canceled Pink that it was a red herring. It's just such an out of no where thing that they didn't even have to change in the intro.

I'm personally more inclined to believe it was Jigglypuff as yellow was made in reference to the anime. And as Jigglypuff was a recurring character, its more likely. Additionally Jigglypuff was in super smash brothers, both games being in development at the same time, which would have been free marketing for both games.

Yet if that was the case, then why did they choose to put Clefairy on the boarder of the Gameboy Camera in the japan version and not Jiggypuff? Yet Clefairy was the starter for Red in the Manga which would make more sense as Pikachu was the starter in the anime (As Ash is Red's counter part in that timeline) and make more sense as it would give something that the people who watched the Anime would buy (Yellow) and the people who read the Manga (Pink) That is actaully incorrect as Pokemon Yellow (Which would have released with pink like all other pokemon main line games) was released in september 12th, 1998 and Super Smash Brothers for the Nintendo 64 first released in Japan was January 21st 1999, About a 4 month different and also, Jigglypuff was an last minute addition as they were trying to add other characters to the game to give different play styles like Marth from Fire Emblem (To be a different way to play an sword fighter then Link)

Yet Jiggypuff was a last minute addition to Smash 64 along with Luigi (due to his moveset being broken a little bit), but unlike Luigi they were actaully planning on removing Jigglypuff in future games of Smash but didn't due to them being one of the oringal 12 characters.

I really wish they'd finally swap Green and Blue's names back. They still wear colors that match the Japanese versions. The games shouldn't have to follow the manga canon from 30 years ago. If you play the Blue version then Red's name is swapped too anyway. They should've changed it when they released LeafGreen, not WaterBlue almost 20 years ago. Final Fantasy knew to pull the bandaid quickly so we've had 6 instead of III for decades.. She's Blue! not Green! T_T PS I totally agree @ Clefairy

Compelling case for Clefairy, but I'm leaning towards Jigglypuff. Yellow Version was made in response to Pikachu's presence in the anime and the game changed good portions of itself to match the show. To that end, it seems more likely to me that following the immediate high of mimicking the anime would see Pink Version represented by the recurring Jigglypuff rather than the one-off Clefairy; there is even a NPC in the game that's a Jigglypuff that recreates the anime's Jigglypuff's song rhythm that may have only been added because a starter Jigglypuff was no longer present.

I've used a gameshark code to make my starter Mew in a gen 1 playthrough before. It was pretty fun, and I'm not sure Mew is really super busted for a starter. I do think Clefairy is almost certainly the correct answer, but I think Mew would have been the most interesting.

Counter aurguments: Pokemon Yellow (And what would have been Pink's released date) is September 12th 1998 while Smash 64 released date (Japan since thats the earliest date) was January 21st of 1999, a four month different. (And yes games can chance alot within 4 months) Jigglypuff was an last minute addition to Smash and in later installments they were almost removed but wasn't due to being one of the oringal 12 characters in smash. The oringal Manga for Pokemon had Clefairy as the Starter Pokemon for Red. Clefairy was oringally going to be Ash's starter in the anime before it was Pikachu. On the Japan version of the Gameboy Camera, Clefairy is on the Boarder with Pikachu.

Ok, NOW I GOT AN IDEIA. We have that problem in yellow legacy that the teams end up the same with pikachu starter. What if in Yellow Legacy we could chose betwen Pikachu, Eevee and Clefairy? Ok, this would change to much the game and make it feel different. But it fits with the Green girl you alread add to the game. And if it is to much, you could just put the choise between Pikachu and Eevee (and make it don't acept the stone either).

Pink could be either Clefairy or Jiggly, sure, but to go as far as claiming a headcanon where Clef is the 3rd member of a supposed trio? I beg to differ Meowth was also popular and heavily featured, more so than Jiggly ever wishes to be, alongside Pikachu. If anything it's only 2nd to Pikachu in terms of total anime screentime. Its dex number is 52, a reverse of Pikachu's 25, and the 2 of them make for the popular cat-mouse pair. In gen 8, guess which 3 gen 1 unevolved and popular Pokemon got a Gigantamax forme each? Yeah.
