Pokemon's Most DISAPPOINTING Mechanic

Ever since generation 6 of Pokemon [X and Y], each new gen includes some sort of gimmick. Mega evolution, Z moves, Dynamax, and terastallization were all created to give each game its own identity, and set them apart from each other. Within Dynamax though, there was another type of form change known as Gigantamax, which is the topic of today's video. What Gigantamax forms aren't worth using at all? How do these form changes compare to mega evolution? Can Elias secretly do a backflip? All that and more today on MEPlaysGames

As a non competitive player the worst thing is that you can't catch a pokemon that gigantimax and have it gigantimax, it has to be special.

Duraludon is a fun case. The company was aiming for its success and popularity, then it became a steel Druddigon, so they just gave up and designed a new pseudo-legendary stat evolution

Hey, turns out Gmax is also completely botched in Pokémon GO to an insane degree. For starters, only Pokémon you catch at power spots can DYNAmax, completely missing the point of the mechanic to begin with, you need to visit a lot of power spots and candy to unlock and power up their Max Moves, not to mention leveling them up to begin with, as they come at Lv20 as every other Pokémon from raids, which costs a lot of candy and stardust. Oh also you can only collect so many max particles necessary to power up from power spots every day, limiting how much you can grind, those same particles are used to participate in Max Raids. But it's alright, Gigantamax is totally worth it in the end, right? No, GMax moves are at least 1/3rd stronger than the respective Max move, so that's pretty significant, but you can only have the one Gmax move instead of being able to change it (for example GMax Charizard can only have GMax Wildfire, while regular humble Charizard could have Max Flare, Max Airstream, Max Wyrmwind), they cost ALL the max particles you could collect daily, *AND* they take anywhere from 15~35 people to beat. I don't know what the hell Niantic was thinking. Even strong Legendary Pokémon in regular raids take only 4 people. Oh, and you can only do Max Raids locally. You can't organize or invite friends from across the globe. GOOD EFFING LUCK finding a dozen local players if you live in a small town that *can* do Legendary Raids comfortably--not even Rural Areas where that's not even a possibility.

The issue here is not Gravity, I really love the effect and want it to be more relevant. It’s just unfortunate that G-Max Gravitas was slapped on one of the Pokémon who appreciates the Gravity the least it’ll probably only get one perfect Hypnosis anyway since unless you actively avoid setting up Gravity (and thus using your best attacking move), you’ll only have a single turn to use it while at normal size. Even then, that’s assuming that you end up using Hypnosis on that last turn anyway, there’s a ton of instances where you’d rather switch or take the kill.

g-max feels like they wanted to soften the blow of losing megas a little bit by giving pokemon new forms in another way, but because it needs to exist within the system of the main mechanic without overshadowing it and ruining the point of all pokemon being able to dynamax as opposed to a select few...yeah

I think two easy ways to make Gigantamax worth it is to either: 1. Give the Pokemon a stat boost 2. Keep the original effect of their Max Move's type in addition to the unique one. E.g.: Gmax Gravitas setting up Gravity AND Psychic Terrain.

What would you think of making the G-Max move's effect just be a passive trait? Not a new Ability replacing the one they have (as Megas did), but more something like Grass-types' immunity to powder moves, except it's applied to all damaging attacks the G-Max Pokemon uses. Too broken, or fitting enough for a once-per-battle, three-turn limit form that you REALLY have to go out of your way for?

Another good example is G-Max Charizard not being able to set its own sun with its fire type moves. It’s hidden ability makes it deal more damage in the sun as well as just straight up boosting fire moves so missing out for some chip damage is kinda lame

I mean this incredibly kindly, probably the worst example you could use there. G-Max Charizard was one of, if not the best Dynamax attacker in the game because Solar Power, Sun boosted G-Max Wildfires hit like a bullet train and the effect was just that overpowered. If it meant slapping a Torkoal or Groudon on your team to set sun up instead, so be it. Point very much agreed tho, it feels like a lot of G-Max moves were them not knowing what to give them and just slapping the most random efforts on them (why did G-Max Gold Rush confuse, makes no sense)

I feel like with Dyna/Gigantamax GF was trying to strike a balance between Megas giving some Pokemon a new marketable form, and Z-moves being usable for every Pokemon (with some Pokemon getting exclusive moves). I can respect their reasoning, even if it wasn't implemented well.

I think tera-types are the best gimmic mechanically, but megas are the best presentation wise. Gigantimax just isn't done well either way.

Honestly more people would have like Dynamax more if it was just Gigantamax. Giving everything x2 HP and Max moves and all random immunities is just kind of dumb. For perspective, base Rayquaza using Max version of Dragon Ascent does more damage than Mega Rayquaza using the same move. 252 Atk Rayquaza Max Airstream (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Avalugg: 118-139 (29.9 - 35.2%) -- 22.6% chance to 3HKO 252 Atk Rayquaza-Mega Dragon Ascent vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Avalugg: 117-138 (29.6 - 35%) -- 13.4% chance to 3HKO This is on top of removing Dragon Ascent’s drawback, giving +1 to speed, bypassing protect, having x2 HP, and all the other benefits of Dynamax. So yeah if Dynamax mechanically outclasses Mega Rayquaza, MAYBE it should only be on a select few shitmons.

I'm more concerned by the mechanics themselves. In both cases, it wasn't a matter of the Mon, but how the activation turn went. The "This should really use up your turn" thing in particular was cranked up with Dynamax by recalling the Mon as part of the activation ... which also highlighted how it should've reset stages and volatiles.

I do prefer gigantamax designs over mega designs but megas were absolutely the better gimmick. Dynamax as a whole really got screwed. No one likes it. Sucks that many gmax moves are downgrades from regular max moves but I feel like there’s a way to work around that.

I think the reason almost no gen 6 mons got megas is because the mechanic was meant to breathe life into older mons, and any pokemon that got one in gen 6 would have been designed with a mega evolution in mind, and that means the base form would inevitably become bad when mega went away. Diancie is a great example. It's pretty bad without its mega because it's base form just has a bad stat spread, but it was meant to meta evolve.

It's more like that Mega only exists to pull in older players. After the flop of Gen 5, it makes sense that GF was worried about their first 3D mainline game and thus used nostalgia to get hook older players. So it would have made no sense for Kalos pokemon to mega-evovle as they were new.

By this logic, M-Altaria and M-Pinser have wasted abilities becasue they both are in the exact same situation. M-Glalie's issues more stem from its underwhelming stat spread and unfavorable niche, not its frankly fantastic ability Also M-Banette's prankster destiny bond is its own exclusive trait. It hits hard(Especially with it getting Poltergeist over the weak Shadow Claw) then can cripple the opponent before going down with a debilitating status. Its way better since it got Swords Dance and Poltergeist, so the worst kitted Mega isnt that one

I genuinely never understood why they didn't just allow GMAX Cuddle to just work on every Pokémon. And they also had good opportunity to finally fix Attract in that gen and let Pokémon like Cryogonal work on all genders (or at least on Genderless Pokémon). As the attraction in both cases is more about beauty/cuteness than actual gender based attraction. Also with GMAX Eevee being linked to Partner Eevee - they missed opportunity to give it 8 different GMAX moves based on the Partner moves it gets in LGPE. I mean they could just name it GMAX Cuddle and have the same animation for all, but have the type be different (effect could also be either the same or as a copy of the broken moves). Or they could have copied Eevee Z-Move mechanic.

This is a bit doomer but I think it is for the best next to no Kalosian Pokemon had megas as I just know a lot would be half baked or there would be lines trapped at two members where the improvement into the third one are basically meant to make up for lacking a second evo; and they'd all be suffering as hell when it moved to new generations without Megas but more notably if you just wanted to run two of these half baked pokemon on a team and suffer since you can only make one into a real party member each fight.

Megas are more interesting than G-Max, and while both have a limited number of mons eligible, every pokemon can Dynamax. (Most of the G-Max forms are pretty cool, though.)

I think it’d be neat if they repurposed these G-Max forms the next time Mega Evolution comes back. Instead of giving the Pokemon a Mega Stone, you give it a Wishing Star, and then you can Mega Evolve it into a reasonably-sized version of the G-max form. Maybe they implement the G-max moves into the Pokemon’s normal moveset? Or maybe they replace appropriately-typed moves upon “Mega Evolving.” Could even mess with HP when giving bonus stats now that there’s precedent for how that’d work.

In defense, *some* G-Max moves are better than the Max moves. Example, when Venusaur Gigantamaxs instead of having Max Overgrowth (which will heal pokemon that aren't flying type or have levitate) he'll have G-Max Vine Lash (which will damage the opponents regardless of the typing and ability)

Dynamax is a criminally boring mechanic that didn't do anything I wanted it to do when I first saw it. I was hoping for some kind of stat alteration beyond HP and I absolutely hate how they handled max moves in general. Sandaconda is one that doesn't work well either G-Max Sandblast inflicts Bind. That can be helpful in doubles but in Singles you waste too many turns for it to be effective Max Quake, The standard Max Ground Move, Increases the Sp. Def. of you and your ally. That is strictly better as it Walls Special attackers.

Beedrill just needed a srraight up buff. Like give it the Simple ability and the shift gear skill or something like that. Tinted lense or skill link could be good too. Its just that rather than fixing beedrill they gave it a gimmick that is limited to 1 per team and there are much better choices. It needed a real buff. The worst thing for me is that since megas aren't real evolutions you can't even slap an eviolite on it for survivability.

I think its the exact opposite, I think Megas were designed around buffing a few specific pokemon like Beedrill or Banette, then in order to make the idea successful it needed to be put on 'popular' pokemon. That's why the non popular picks feel so random and arbitrary but they were all pokemon who desperately needed something.

I’d say that Z-moves would be the most disappointing gimmick, you only could use it once per battle, and in competitive, they were a stressful thing for both players: it can kill a good member of one team, but they may waste the move when they use a Z-move that can be negated (example: any dragon z-move against the almighty Flabebe)

I didn't do any gen-7 PvP, but you were probably using a Z-Status for the added effects instead of a Z-Damage for the blowout. IIRC the only Z-Move to get banned was Extreme Evoboost, which was ++Everything. Slap on Baton Pass and unless your opponent could Haze or phaze, lol bye

I loved megas as a kid, still do, and most of you guys' points i do agree with though, megas aren't perfect by far, (we need more good trash-mons) same with gigantimax, (it's way more of a pain to obtain the shrooms needed for that)(thoughwe can all agree that both mechanics do have killer designs) but gigantimax does have a one-up on z-moves that being able to set up hazards while doing damage like G-max Steelsurge, and being able to use said moves more than once while also not taking up an item slot, i though would also put terastalization over Gigantimax/Dynamax because its definitely the most unique out of the four, being able to change your type at will is innovative as flip and makes for some more game-changing strategy for battles id still put megas on top though, with teras close behind, nice video, yall never fail to make me chuckle, you guys make it less believable yall passed English class every video(make lumileon a water/fire type based on and orca and give it fire blast instead of flamethrower) and, uh, have a rotten b-day i guess😂

MandJTV did a video about which Gmax pokemon are better and we found out the following Most of the water types suck because rain is better than their other effects The Apples suck befause their effects dont help them. The shotgun snake is good because sandstorm being set up on its stab move is awesome Meowth is a toss-up (depending on if its a playthroygh or multiplayer) And Gengar, Hatterene, Alcremie and Garbodor are great because their Gmax effects are way better than the vanilla effects

G max cuddle is not the worst when everything in the right place. It's goes well like a secondary effectives from a non serine Grace Pokémon. Getting a status condition from any elemental punches. "Let's go eevee partner eevee" and evolite just for normal eevee.

I personally don't like z moves and terrastalization. The little dance your character had to do was pretty goofy in my opinion. Terrastalization just looks like the pokemon gets a different coloured chandelier on its head. Also I don't play competitive.

It way more balence than mega evo to be honest, dmax and gmax dont need percific pokemon like mega evo, which make people can have more creative in build a team, 3 turn make you think harder when activating it and not stupidly losing it in a single use just like zmove.
