@@coolyeh1017 He's kinda right tho. We're talking about the same kids who grow up with TikTok's videos that are 10/max 15 secs each. Their attention span is significantly more reduced than kids who grew up back in the 80s/90s/2000s and so is their patience at learning and getting rewards from a videogame. Back then if you sucked at a game it you were encouraged to try harder, because yes it is challenging byt not impossible, so, if you put all yourself in it, you will eventually beat it. And once you did, you felt like you could overcome the end of the damn World alone. Most kids nowadays want things immediately, they don't want to learn shit, they don't want challenges, they don't want to get good at something. If they suck at a videogame is the developers' fault and the game sucks. It's hard to believe but it's the truth. Replayed Pokémon yellow recently and the part about learning moves was SO true. Seemed like their was a larger emphasis on TMs since you find so many of them scattered constantly and like, no mons ever got good moves (Jolteon can't learn Thunderbolt on its own, Rhydon only gets normal moves,etc)
@Namingway2482 жыл бұрын
the bigger problem in the first two gens (imo) comes when pokemon can't learn most of the TMs in the first place. the amount of pokemon with arms who weren't able to learn any "punch" moves never made sense to me.

@@Namingway248 tbf in gen 1 and 2 it felt "easier" to break the game with too strong attacks. I think this is the SMT emphasis GameFreak had in mind still back then when they created Pokemon. I mean you can still finish the game with like a Butterfree in your team, but it was still hard because of its stats and how damage was calculated back then that you have to think about what you do with it.
@saphiriathebluedragonknight3752 жыл бұрын
It's especially annoying in Nuzlocks. "I'll save my Earthquake TM for later. I'm sure my Nidoking will be fine. Oh yeah, Jolteon has Pin Missile. Oh yeah, Bug was Super Effective on Poison. Oh yeah, my Nidoking is dead. It's fine. I'll just teach Earthquake to my Dragonite, and he can't learn it."
@kyrarose45172 жыл бұрын
Actually, I super liked that Jolteon got pin missile! 9/10 times it's going to just use Thunderbolt, but one of the types that resist electric is grass. Additionally, all but two grass pokémon in gen 1 were either part psychic or poison (the odd ones out being Tangela and Parasect). This means that Jolteon's pin missile could hit for x4 weakness against mons that would otherwise resist its main move. Plus pin missile being multi-hit meant more chances to score a crit with its high speed. -end of rant

While the intention of unchangeable IVs in the past was to make each pokemon feel like an individual slightly different from all others, the ability to objectively improve your Pokemon by changing their IVs actually incentivizes being attached to the friends you took with you on your journey. People who want to step into competitive with their starter can now do so, rather than working to make their ubermensch grandchild competitively viable.

@greyscaleadaven2 жыл бұрын
@@LoudWaffle Honestly I'm all for it. Pokemon has historically had one of the highest information walls in front of competitive. I wanted to abolish IVs entirely bc I think they disincentivize new players from getting into the scene, but I kinda like this solution better. Pokemon Showdown dominated the meta for so long just because people like me couldn't be bothered to spend hours breeding countless pokemon even when I have all the knowledge/resources to do so. So it's nice to actually feel like if I wanted to, I could make a competitive team very quickly or borrow one using a rental code. You still have to grind tera raids or money for bottle caps/vitamins if you want to use them, but it's not like that's entirely unattainable even going in blind.
@CrizzyEyes Жыл бұрын
@@LoudWaffle It would be better if the IVs were locked to a fixed maximum total points, which were spread among the stats. So your mon could only be so good in a certain stat, and if it rolled max on that stat, it would suffer in others. That way they would feel individual and unchangeable, while also not requiring you to use cheesy items, or spend quite as many hours breeding or grinding. Then again I never play competitive for reasons like this exactly, so changing it to my whim would mean catering to someone who doesn't even play competitive.

I have not played pokemon in about five years now (my first was leafgreen and my last was moon), so I had no idea that you can use items to fix your IVs and nature. Things sure have changed!
@WyvernRex20992 жыл бұрын
Bottle Caps were a thing in moon, albeit they were very obscure due to being placed in the Poke Festival. Nature mints were introduced in Sword and Shield in the Battle tower for 50 BP each. Other quality of life mechanics were added too, a lady in the Sword and Shield DLC can reset your Pokemon’s IVs in exchange for some items, an item was introduced that changes a Pokemon’s ability to its hidden ability, and you no longer need heart scales to relearn moves. But for some reason the past 2 mainline pokemon games (Not including Legends Arceus) got rid of berry farming, Scarlet and Violet removed the faster ways to EV train seen in the past few entries, and there’s no more button combination to instantly reset your game. So, there’s pros and cons to the newer games.

I've actually seen people complain about TM's being multiple use because it "ruins the challenge". As if the games were hard outside of buggy programing or bad hindsight.
@gameboyn642 жыл бұрын
People also love to complain about the exp share because they love grinding. Gotta love killing the entire ecosystem just to get pokemon up to level.
@NEETKitten2 жыл бұрын
@@gameboyn64 The exp share is more complaining that it's forced. I know that I sure as hell don't like it. Forced exp share de-incentivizes you from using multiple pokemon and instead doubling down on the "steamroll the whole game with your starter" mentality. Because now, that's objectively the best option since there's no upside to using any other pokemon unless you run into something that hard-counters your main mon. Which, considering how easy it is to cover nearly all of your bases in terms of type coverage, will never happen.
@gameboyn642 жыл бұрын
@@NEETKitten I've played pokemon from the beginning. The lack of an exp share is what incentivizes juggernauting. You are encouraged to only use one pokemon because only one pokemon gets exp from battle and therfore one pokemon is incredibly likely to out level the others. The modern game disincentivizes juggernauting by generously giving non combat pokemon exp so they are actually viable relatively easily. A second thing modern pokemon does is that it scales exp gains based on level differences. This means it's mathematically more difficult to juggernaut modern pokemon games as higher level pokemon get less exp per kill than they did in older games however, lower level pokemon get more and therefore become usable much faster.
@NEETKitten2 жыл бұрын
@@gameboyn64 Alright, I can see the logic in that. I realize that I've started to think of pokemon in more of a challenge run mentality (hard mode, rom hacks, nuzlockes, etc) as time's gone on and that's admittedly sort of skewed my perspective on how these games are "supposed" to be played. (And to be honest I'm not entirely sure when that mentality started for me) So while I think that exp share is bad in that scenario, since it eliminates a lot of the challenge that you're looking for to begin with, I can definitely see how it benefits casual play. However there's a second problem it creates that I forgot to mention the first time: it feels too handhold-y. Like, Pokémon is already a very easy game series, and giving every pokemon exp regardless of their contribution makes it even easier. To a patronizing degree, I'd argue. Even just looking at the games as a casual, it's damn-near impossible for you to fail with all of the accessibility features the game forces on you. Sure, it alleviates a lot of the tedium of postgame grinding or pokedex completion. But in doing so, imo, it made pokemon boring. There's no reward, no sense of growth or accomplishment, the games basically just hand you the win as soon as you press start. It really feels like the devs are going "Sorry our baby easy RPG is giving you a hard time. Here, we'll make it easier for you so you don't have to think and can just mash the A button. Now who's in strong little idiot?" At least that's what it feels like to me Even as a dumb kid I woulda found this boring. Because the game doesn't let me engage with it enough to form a connection to it. I have no reason to play a game then or now when said game half-plays itself. And this sentiment is shared by a lot of the community, which is why all of these QoL changes, which should on paper be objective improvements to the formula, are so hated. The players aren't being respected. They're not being challenged or made to feel like they accomplished something when they win. They're being told to press the button and watch the PowerPoint presentation.
