Pokemon Theory: Gym Leader Norman is Champion Gold? (Ethan)

It seems to me that gym leaders are forced to give up the teams they had as trainers in favor of a mono type team for their gym. In BW2, Cheren specifically states that he would've done better if he had his "usual partners" and naturally he has a different team than in BW. This would explain why in other sources like the manga, gym leaders are seen with other Pokemon that are not of their gym typings. The gym leaders' job isn't too crush all challengers but to see if they have what it takes to be a champion. In Pokemon origins, Brock first asks how many badges Red has and chooses his Pokemon accordingly. However, it is never stated in the special that there is a specific order to do the gyms in, only suggestions, generally focused on the nearest gym. This suggests that gym leaders actually have a range of Pokemon of different levels at their disposal (possibly provided by the Pokemon association at the beginning) which they then choose from based on the number of badges the challenger has. This explains how the first gym always has low level pokemon. If everyone went to the same first gym in the same order, those Pokemon would be way stronger than level 14 with that amount of challengers. That's how Norman had level 30 Pokemon who weren't part of his original team after only a few weeks. He probably has hundreds of normal type Pokemon from 14 to 45!

***** Well he's the last Gym Leader you have to beat at the end of the game, so Nintendo might've been 'we might as well put something 'special' in here' and keep his team. also, with 16 gyms, there are not many types left to specialise in and Nintendo/Game Freak might have wanted to keep the remaining types for the Elite Four (in any case the Dark type which was new to the original G/S/C I believe. The only type that hasn't been included in both Elite Four and Gyms is Ground because Giovanni is gone)

Here is another plot twist nobody imagined. What if Norman is Ethan's father. He abandoned him and his wife back when he realized she was pregnant. And left for Hoenn, there he captured his pokemon. He returned to Johto to re-establish his relationship, but it was a failure, he was never forgiven so he returned to Hoenn and started a new life. This adds an even more crazy theory. He's not Brandon/May's father. Since he married a single mom. Which explains why he's hard on the player. He is being like that to show he's tough. But actually its all his mistakes he did on the past that haunt him. Eventually once the player beats him. He finally opens his eyes. And finally becomes a better father.

I knew people in college who never bought any of the current generation consoles (this was during the 360-Wii-PS3 days) and left an SNES or Genesis on their TV, opting to use the PC for current generation gaming instead. So yes. I would not be surprised if Red was a retro gamer while Ruby/Sapphire kept up with the times. That is VERY plausible. Also its hard to take the inclusion of an NES or GCN in the players characters homes too seriously. Mostly since they were primarily used for advertising.

I have another theory: Ethan was 19 years old and hooked up with Lyra. However, by that time Ethan had EVERY SINGLE Pokémon in the Kanto and Jotho regions and got bored, so he visited the Safari Zone in Route 48. Then he catched a bunch of Slakoths to train them because he liked them for some random reason. Team Rocket struck real hard in a surprise attack against Kanto and Jotho. While Red kept them off for a while, they attacked NBT and surroundings, so Ethan and Lyra had to run away to another region. Lyra, however, alredy had a 7 year old child (Brendan/May), so they needed a lot of support to run away. They chose to use the Time Capsule. However, the Time Capsule had to be modified to make people travel in time, which was done with both Brendan/May and Celebi's help. The machine still couldn't take Gen 2 Pokémon, but it didn't had any trouble with anything else, so Ethan took his Slakoths with him. They traveled 9 years into the past. When they arrived to Hoenn, the time travel made them 1 year more old for each 3 years they traveled for some reason (7 + 3 = 10 = Brendan/May's age). The Time Capsule had some delay, so Ethan came before Lyra and his son/daughter. So when he arrived, Ethan only had a bunch of Slakoths. At the same time, the Petalburg Gym Leader gave up. However, Ethan decided to change his name, to avoid causing any trouble with the time flow. He decided to be a Normal-Type leader, and changed his name to "Norman", by combining Normal + Ethan. So after training his Slakoths and evolving them, he applied to be a Gym Leader and got in. Then his family came to the nearest house available, in Littleroot Town. His son used some fake hair and a band to keep his identity secret, and started his journey. Ethan lived in incognito forever and ever, and in future games we'll know what happens to him.

Ash is Reds father? brock knows ash, which is why brock is so interested in helping red in the begining of pokemon origens. ash is a trainer who took a while to get to varidian city, which is why reds mom, tells red that it took his father 5 days to get there mr. fuji gives red a mega evolution stone which doesnt exist when ash meets him. also proffessor oak in origens has a deeper voice than ashes professor oak. possibly because he is acctually Gary oak as an old man. During the Sevii Islands story arc in FR/LG (the same story as 1st gen) reveals that 1st gen and 3rd gen happen simultaneously, and the Time Capsule from 1st gen to 2nd gen reveals that 2nd gen happened after 1st. Therefore, 3rd gen happens before 2nd, and Gold cannot be Norman.

The Gen 3 was supposed to take place after Gen 2, but because the fans raged about not being able to get their old pokemon from previous generations in ruby sapphire and emerald versions, so nintendo altered the official time line so that gen 1 and 3 would happen at the same time, and made pokemon fire red and leaf green, this is why soul silver and heart gold came after diamond pearl and platinum, to re-enforce the new time line. Norman, MIGHT have been intended to be Gold, but this idea was definitely scrapped after the time line was rewritten.

I know RSE took place at the same time as FRLG which were Red and Blue remakes, but picture this: Ethan accidentally gets caught in one of Celebi's trips back into the past and wound up in a time before he was born. After that he changed his name, found a new place to live, became an adult and had a kid, and then moved to Hoenn where he found a few Slakoths and RSE happened. Then he could have trained those Slakoths either while or before his kid began his/her journey.

I noticed in the manga, Norman was already living in the Heon region and requested the rest of his family (ruby and Norman's wife) move out there. Norman also seems to be a very strict man, wanting his son to grow up and be the best trainer to the point where he's a bit mean about it. There is as far as i know ONE major flaw with this theory, in the tournament of pokémon black2 and white2 you can fight against all the protagonists, champions and gym leaders. One of the protagonists is Ethan and one of the Gym leaders is normal. I think that the best bet to this theory Protomario is this... When Ethan moved to Hoenn his Pokemon were still low level. But he trained his team up while your main character was fighting the other leaders. By time you return to challenge him he is at the level portrayed in the games. Note that in the beginning of the game he lends wally a level 8 Zigzagoon. Wally uses it to catch Ralts and returns it. This may not be solid evidence but it is still just a theory after all.

Or, Norman could have been given pokemon by the league to start off with, which would make sense since all of his pokemon are from one evolutionary line, and as he settles into his new home, he could catch more diverse pokemon from around there.

Maybe Ethan, scared that team rocket would try and get revenge, ran away to hoenn, leaving his pokemon with the professor and changing his name. At the same time he tried to search for his father, and due to chasing up leads and knowing that team rocket were at last long gone, returned to johto. He found a wife got married and had a son, but rumours that team rocket were gathering strength once again, made him run once again to hoenn, where he already had made ties and took up the position of gym leader to cut any loose ends and life happily ever after.

Big problem with this theory. The events of Hoenn (ruby and sapphire) happened around the same time as the events in Kanto. (red and blue) Ethan from Gold and Silver didn't even start his journey yet.

I don't think that Norman was lying. He may have only caught 3 slakoth just before you meet him and help out Wally. When you were on your journey, he trained a ton and was prepared to fight you. This also may be the reason he way urging you to fight the other gyms first: he wanted time to train his pokemon. That is my theory on this.

You can actually know what happens from the Pokemon Adventures manga. Even Gold (Ethan) and Ruby (Brandon) ever stand side by side together with the other generations trainers.

one thing you can add to your theory which is quite comical is that during his journey his encounter with Whitney he was so impressed with her (AND HER BLOODY FREAKING COW) that he formed a relationship with her had some kids and decided to become a family man and still indulge his pokemon fixations by mastering the one type that gave him the biggest troubles ( btw i only came up with that just because I HATE WHITNEY'S MILTANK WITH A PASSION) and think about it the biggest problem ( for me anyways ) when facing RED was his snorlax . . both miltank and snorlax are normal types . . . makes ya think

....This makes no sense. In Gold/Silver/Crystal/HeartGold/SoulSilver, the player (Gold) fights Red on Mt. Silver. Later in Black2/White2, you can fight Red at the PWT, as well as Norman. Red hasn't aged a bit, so how in the world could Norman be Gold.

proto there is something you need to know about gym leaders: it is official that gym leaders are forbidden to use there own Pokémon, they are hired by the elite 4 (that was a simple guess) and are only able to use the Pokémon that actually belong to the gym itself.

A Pokemon theory that I have is that perhaps the trainer of the current game is the child (or somehow related) to the previous trainer of the game before it e.g the trainer in Sinnoh is related to the trainer from Hoenn.

plot twist: Ethan disbanded his Johto party, so he could start fresh (so it would be more of a challenge in Hoenn). remember that Slakoth that Norman gave to Wally, you would later battle it as a Slaking, Norman's main Pokemon. As for the name Norman, he wanted it to suit the type of Pokemon he planned to use.Lt. Surge = Electric, Chuck = Fighting, Norman = Normal

Looking at pokemon Origins (Where Mega Evolution is introduced) and with the games Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire its save to say that Kalos takes place after Kanto and Hoenn, but before the others and that the Sinnoh and Johto Megas where native in Hoenn and it wil also explain why Serena stil recognizes Ash. It wil also make sense why the Johto and Sinnoh starters still don't have a Mega Evolution, while Kanto and Hoenn starters does. And if Ethan is Norman, why did he aged and Lyra did not.

What about Norman being Giovanni? After disbanding Team Rocket, Giovanni changes his name to Norman and runs to Johto. He starts a family and to support his family, becomes a gym leader, something he already had experience in. When there's no position available in Johto, he instead goes to Hoenn to become the Petalburg Gym Leader.

Norman could also be Red seeing that the fact that Red became champion in kanto and went to Mt. Silver in Johto so he must have moved kanto to Johto to hoenn so he must have aged

also, hoenn obviously came after kanto, because there is a model of the ss anne in the oceanic museum, and the old man near it says that he saw a model that looked like the ship wreck near dewford. the only ship model besides the ss anne is the ss tidal, which is currently in use.

Something to note is that the only place you can catch Slakoth is the woods right next to normans gym, so maybe that's why he uses them, theyre normal types from the local environment

think you fight him later on in the game so he had the time to train up while the protagonist is traveling, this could be true because he had a level seven zigzagoon. Also his Pokemon from johto might be to powerful in a gym or his original Pokemon might not be allowed in hoenn since most 1st and 2nd gen Pokemon weren't in R/S/E. so he probably caught low level Pokemon told the protagonist to pass him by while he trained and then finally battled the protagonist with his Pokemon he had caught early in the game.
