I always thought you black out because the trainer you lost to punches you in the face, takes half your money, and throws you back to the pokémon center.

Koen Woo I mean just look at Subspace Emissary in Brawl, Red goes unconscious with little provocation when Galleom is about to beat them! Turns out you aren't bringing your Pokemon to the center, but they are instead bringing you so they can get on with their journey. Red: "NO, I am the VERY BEST! This can't be possible! I must be dreaming!" *Proceeds to dive off one of the many small ledges, right into a face plant* Bulbasaur: "Damn-it, he did it again!" *Drags his ass to the hospital, AGAIN*

The term "blacking out" is also used to refer to dissociation, so I take it that the trainer becomes so worried and afraid for their Pokemon's health that they dissociate as they run to the nearest Pokemon center.

This is my theory: Trainers don't really black out, white out or whatever. If you read the dialogue box after you lose a battle, it says that you run back to a poke center, protecting your pokemon from further harm. I think the game is just saving you from having to go back to a poke center manually, because I'm certain that if this mechanic wasn't in place that's what a lot of people would do anyways (unless they have items like revive)
@haydengames3v2

Well yes it's a fail safe since you can't "game over", although gen 2 does raise a question for when you defeat Red, the screen whites out and you are left in the cave for a second by yourself. I kind of think parallel worlds are involved since the only battle in gen 1 that you can lose is the first, every other battle results in repeated dialogue, like you never lost in the first place.

Except that canonically, the trainer remains conscious and hurries as fast as they can to the nearest Pokemon Center, per the text in FireRed and LeafGreen. Which leaves only one option: blacking (or whiting) out is a term used by the in-game Pokemon League rules (which must exist in some form, even though never explicitly shown in-game) to refer to the when a trainer is out of Pokemon.

As seen in pokemon origins, which, contrary to the Ash anime, is based on the games, highly empathic trainers feel the same way their pokemon feel during battle. I think a more logical explanation would be that because of the high level of empathy the player character has, the player faints together with his pokemon. Just a shot in the dark though.
@funnyfox204
@funnyfox204 6 жыл бұрын
bigtrolly i think ur right. I mean, in a world where dragons exist and god can be captured in a capsule the size of a base ball and by a 10 YEAR OLD, it makes sense that the trainer would have some sort of connection with their pokemon, so when all of them faint, they cant handle the pressure and faint too. It also explains why trainers can only have 6 pokemon: they just cant handle the physical and non-physical stress.

I really never thought of it as blacking out as in "passing out." after all, in HGSS i believe it states that the player rushed their Pokemon to a center. You know how when a traumatic or frightening event happens and everything around you just seems to stop and you later don't really recall the memory of exactly what happened? That's what I always attributed it to

I personally subscribe to the anime's interpretation, that you occasionally ttake the same damage as your pokemon, and so you black out from the pain and the other trainer takes you to the poke center
@tenletters5889

a more believable (in cannon) answer would quite simply be that the trainer either has a outrageously strong bond with those Pokémon, or has a major fear of losing.

Feel free to correct me on this, but I'm pretty sure one of the recent titles has updated dialogue saying that you are shielding your Pokemon while trying to get them to safety. I think it was either Gen 5 or 6 that did this. Also apparently the implied meaning of the word used in the Japanese version for blacking out is "lose hope" or what it literally translates out to, "plunge into darkness" [thanks bulbapedia]

Yes, now the text says that trainer runs back to the pokemon center to get their pokemon healed. This change was made in Fire Red and Leaf Green so at this point we might have more games with running back than we do with fainting.

It's called "blacking-out" and "whiting-out" because of the transitions that happens afterwards, blacking-out causes the screen to fade to black and whiting-out causes the screen to fade to white, the trainers simply walk to their last healing place as they go through this.

When you run out of Pokemon, you are attacked the next second by the Wild Pokemon or The Trainer. You black out as a result. They take the money out of your pocket and run because of witnesses so that's why you only lose a certain amount. The trainers nearby bring you to the Center to get healed.

Here's my theory: Ash and Red's journey's take place simultaneously. It's evidenced when Ash wakes up late for his journey, the 3 starters are already taken by Gary and 2 other unknown trainers from Pallet. Gary is actually Blue(Intern)/Green(Jap), which is just a nickname for him. Their journeys take them different paths and routes, with the Red following the map provided by "Gary's" sister. At times their paths almost cross, such as when they are Cerulean gym at the same time and Red battles Misty before she leaves to continue the journey with Ash. Red also was aboard the St(S.S.) Anne and got lucky and got off before it left with Ash and sunk. Ash made it to and helped Sabrina before Red got there, which is why Sabrina is much nicer. Now a further stretch is that the 3rd trainer before Ash is Leaf, also known as Green(Inten)/Blue(Jap) in the manga. But there is very little evidence of that.

In some of the games it states after you run out of Pokemon and black out, something along the lines of: " rushed to the Pokemon center, protecting the injured Pokemon from further harm". I don't believe that blacking out actually equates to loosing consciousness in-game or anything. But rather just the frantic, perhaps panicked, period in between your lost battle and arriving at the Pokemon Center.

We always hear about "The Bond between a trainer and their pokemon" so maybe when all of a trainer's pokemon faint they, being bonded to their mon, become heartbroken and faint as well. That or the wild/opponents pokemon always somehow manages to knock your final pokemon into you causing a blackout from the impact.

@ZombieBarioth

Blackouts can also be due to loss of memory, which in this case would be psychogenic amnesia, and involve vision loss. What's likely going on is the trainer is blacking out due to fatigue and shock/panic setting in. The trainer is mentally and physically exhausted from the battle, and his/her Pokemon fainted, which in the Japanese version is "near death". So when they blackout or whiteout everything is a blur to them while they rush their Pokemon to the Pokemon Center, and they may have blocked out the entire thing due to stress. In a wild Pokemon battle they're in such a panic they somehow drop money. Its crazy how badly the original games can break by the way.

+LorDNiCo_ the idea is that the glitch allows you to see what happens if you're in a battle without any usable pokemon and _don't_ black out the game recognizes having no pokemon the same as having a full party of fainted pokemon, but glitches out without the right cues available from actually playing the game so from a gameplay standpoint he completely answered the question

I for one think it's like blue in Pokémon origins when he lost to Mewtwo he got hurt as a result of the fight and had to scurry back home. Even red got blasted away with charizard when he lost. My theory is if you lose the battle you normally get konked (somehow) in the heat of the fight and are knocked out. It also works with wild encounters as your Pokémon are technically protecting you from wild Pokémon and with your team gone they basically have their way with you :')

I always thought it was some kind of symbiotic/sympathetic reaction; Humans and Pokemon NEEDING each other to function properly, and if something happened to one half of the partnership, the other half would suffer too. because of pokemon origins, we actually have a solid answer to this now. You "white out" after losing battles because of the strong bond you have with your partners. Basically, when they run out of will to battle, so do you. So you faint.

In Pokémon R&B, the gym leader Lt. surge, says to the trainer that his Pokémon helped shock his enemies into submission during the war. Implying there was some great conflict where humans used Pokémon against each other for power. And so I believe it is possible that since there is no longer wartime in the games, you are allowed by Pokémon law to ‘knock out your opponent but you can’t kill them’ type of sentiment. Growing up I always saw it as a physical blackout from being attacked.

On a more theoretical level and not so literally, it would seem that you faint (black/white out), it occurs when all your Pokemon have fainted. Note how when you defeat another trainer they do not faint, they say some line and give you money and then continue to stand where they were. This means that you, the protagonist are different than every other character in the game. Somehow you have bonded with your team of Pokemon in such a way that as your Pokemon get hurt, so to do you, their strength relies on you, and yours relies on them. I'd say this sounds like something that would be studied, you'd be regarded in the same way that people regard psychics in the real world. Yet, if you win the pokemon league and become the champion in the game, then your bizarre condition with your connection to your pokemon would feel like it was your destiny or your legacy.

I always thought the wild pokemon either attacked you or you were just overwhelmed that you yourself faint [and then they possibly attack you, but fortunately never kill you (at least, not yet anyway)]. After fainting, you are then rescued and wake up at a Pokémon center (or at your mom's).

They should make this into a movie. Basically, the main character refuses to leave a battle when he was supposed to black out, and glitches the world. This results in him and a couple of friends having to go back and fix it. Cool idea, right?

I think blacking/Whiting out is more of a cut scene to symbolize the character walking/teleporting back to the closest pokecenter, in order to avoid wasted time having the player walk back and possibly encounter wild pokemon without any usable ones yourself. The only hole in that of course are the transportation moves (teleport, dig, fly) and why it just doesn't tell you to use that. My only theory on that is just in case you dont have one in your party. Either way. Just seems like a way to save time and get you back to heal your party.

It's so damn late that I found this video, but my theory is... If we can fight the pokemon ourselves, it will feel like the Megami Tensei series. Note that in that game other than using your team of demons to fight a wild demon, you can fight with skills that you learned from some methods (different with each game) or using a weapon to attack the demon.

I don't think visual and gameplay glitches are valid evidence for your conclusion. Of course, blacking out in pokemon doesn't mean you lose consciousness, the character pays their dues to the opposing trainer (or throws coins at a wild animal) and hurries to have their pokemon healed. Blacking out simply prevents us from seeing any of it, it would seem. This would be the answer from a game design standpoint I think. However, your answer is toward the story reason. Well, I think it could relate to the connection with your pokemon. Your pokemon get hurt, and the character is either so upset or shocked they cant keep focus enough to not "black out", or just the rush of returning to the Pokemon Center causes the events to be a blur and unviewable. However, those are only my thoughts, there isn't really evidence I know of for why it happens as a story element. Using the glitches that occur if the black out does not happen doesnt hold weight as evidence because it is unintended occurrences that should not and were not planned to happen, and thus should not be taken seriously. In addition, that evidence backs up the gameplay reason, that being that its a way to transition to the center without showing everything described, but it isn't story evidence, because it isn't an intended story event, nor even a gameplay one.

i have a different perspective other than "because glitches", and more of a lore theory. i could be wrong, it's been a while since i've watched it. but i think the answer is kinda confirmed in the Pokemon Origins series, which is not the same canon to the anime, but represents the games. Kinda like Generations, although i believe Origins and Generations are still different canons. anyway. When trainers become familiar with their pokemon, they kind of start to create a bond with their pokemon where they feel the effects of battle that their pokemon do. That's how they battle more effectively. So when all their pokemon faint in battle, the trainer themselves would also have no energy left to stay conscious. But 2 questions remain; Why do trainers still blackout when they are just given the pokemon and it loses? And why don't other trainers faint when their pokemon all lose? I don't have the answers. but my theory is that the trainers you play as are special. as in they seem to be the only characters who have this unique bond with their pokemon, hence why they are so successful. There is lots of proof to this, for instance in B/W, it's prophesied that you will use Reshiram/Zekrom to fight with N to recreate the ancient battle or something. you're also the hero that interacts with many, many ancient pokemon like Suicune who choose to battle you over any other trainer like Eusine. But the biggest proof is when you fight Red on Mt Silver. when he is defeated, he doesn't say anything, and he vanishes. did he black out and get warped to a pokemon center? You should have these bonds with your pokemon as soon as you meet them, even if it's not apparent immediately. or you just get attacked on route 1 if your pokemon faints.

I guess that the “blacked out” thing meant fainted, so like, the Pokémon your fighting makes you faint by using a powerful move, but you wait and then remain conscious and then go to the Pokémon Center

ProtoMario, what about Ash-Greninja? The bond between Pokémon and Trainer is expressed greatly in Gen1, and is revealed several times throughout the franchise later on, to be a vital component in how Pokémon through Mega Evolution are "Vitally Attached" through said bond to their Trainer? If Trainer and Pokémon become as one in the battle, then Feinting and Blacking Out are simply the outcome of equally being defeated by the Will and Power of the superior opponent or opponents, be it against a Single Wild Pokémon or an Opponent Trainer and Pokémon! The world doesn't just Glitch-Out and Die, no, you just get the wind knocked out of you, until some traveler finds you and drags you back to a PokéCenter, and not to a Hospital! Why? Because your Bond to the now Feinted Pokémon is still connective, and so to heal the Pokémon is to heal the Trainer! If you have multiple Pokémon with you as a Trainer, be it the limit of 6, then you "share the neural load" so to speak, HM's if they are still valid, may be because the Trainer is still healthy enough and supported by the shared life-forces of the other Pokémon in their PokéBalls! This may also be why there is a limit of 6 to begin with, can a Human only take on the shared life force of six Pokémon, is the seventh too much to bare? If you black-out with six feinted, both the Trainer and all 6 Pokémon who have Feinted, will now suddenly arrive fully healed in front of a PokéCenter, perhaps because the shared life-forces being exchanged with the Trainer were able to support them? Would having a Seventh Feinted Pokémon result in the Death of the Trainer then? Again, this may be why we see the Trainer awakening at a PokéCenter, and not a Hospital, as this would do no good to the Pokémon who are sucking the Blacked-Out Trainer dry! Priority-Healing must always come first to the Pokémon and not the Trainer, because of the Vital Bond shared between the two! This also may explain why Trainers and Owners may die and so leave behind their Pokémon alone, and rarely do we see Pokémon having died before their Trainers, not unless something was wrong with the Trainer or Owner to begin with, a problem of illness or poor health! This may also be why a Referee is required, so as to save the Trainer's life from expending too much Life-Force through the Bond during the battle, as if to prevent the Trainer from hurting themselves from supporting the HP of their Pokémon. Grass-Type Pokémon know HP-Draining Moves, so why couldn't all Pokémon share a Vital Bond of Health and Energy between Trainer and Pokémon? How's that for a Theory?
