Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon Review

On November 17, 2017, only one year after the global launch of Pokémon Sun and Moon, Game Freak released two enhanced versions dubbed Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon to the hungry Pokémon fandom.
Boasting an alternate storyline as well as a handful of brand new features and Pokémon these two games would create a rift within the community that is still growing today.
But despite some groups feeling like they're tasteless cash-grabs made to buy time until the next brand new generation, is it possible that these upgraded releases actually live up to their Ultra titles?

Let's settle the debate once and for all. Which games are better, Sun and Moon or Ultra Sun and Moon?!

For me, Sun and Moon had a better story, but Ultra Sun and Moon have Ultra Space travel and that's probably my favorite feature in any game. So even though it kind of butchers the story I'd have to recommend Ultra Sun and Moon since they are basically just Sun and Moon with improvements

One thing about SM/USUM that disappoints me is how they left Kahili behind, even with not taking the chance with USUM. Kahili has a golf course in the in-game Alola map 🗺. Without any major appearances before or after her Elite Four appearances, it feels like they completely dropped the ball on including a golf course ⛳️ mini game alongside Mantine Surfing 🏄‍♂️.

@@kerrywien6775 im so sorry to hear this pokemon sword and shield was linear with nothing to do after a very forgettable story. You walked through each route with nowhere to explore compared to other games. Heck even the cave was a straight path with nothing to do. Story didn't even have a proper story and was a step down. With absolutely nothing to do in the post game one of the reason being there where only two lagandarys to catch one in the main story (which wasn't even catching it was practically handed to you) and the second one in what they called an after story which didn't really have a plot that I'd call a story. The dlc should have been in the game from the get go they locked legendaries and older pokemon behind it... sure you can transfer them but what if you don't have a way to do that. Oh and pokemon walking behind you was locked to dlc... I mean why do that it's been in previous games you should never lock a feature that's in previous games behind a pay wall Just a terrible game. Obviously if you like the game that's cool everyone is entitled to there own opinion and I'm sure you actually like it otherwise you wouldn't have said so but it definitely was a few steps... actually like 10 steps down from previous titles. But I can almost guarantee it won't get the best review from him Obviously I can't say it'll get the worst without watching it but it definitely won't get the best

@@shanenspitaler5790 But it’s a fact: Pokémon Sword and Shield are better Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon does have a lot of optional areas, but the progression is the most linear of any Pokémon Games, and it features too many cutscenes which sucked, but the cutscenes makes the plot/storyline great, but that means in Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon you can’t go of the beaten path which sucks too because you don’t get the same freedom you get in other Games such as Pokémon Platinum and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green and the battle facility/the battle tree is kinda disappointing. Pokémon X and Y, Pokémon Black and White and Pokémon Sword and Shield are less linear than Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

Yes Hau is brought to tears at the end and his character is allow to grow in Sun and moon. In ultra he is the same boring person. The professor being the last challenger is also better as it bring back the cut content of red and blue instead of the replete

im sad you didnt mention the TON (and i mean TON) of sidequests they added in this game, seriously, you can just walk into a random house and get a very cool sidequest to do (also, the trainer school has a horror 1 you can do after beating the 1st kahuna). my fave sidequest has to be the one in the desert, you need you need to do it for yourself, it's out of this world (literally)

Yeah the sidequests were some of the most fun parts of the Alola games, really made USUM more tolerable for me since I made the mistake of playing them right after replaying SM.

Once heard someone say when comparing Sun/Moon to Ultra Sun/Moon that "The story is worse, everything else is better" and honestly? I agree. Sun/Moon's story lives on to this day as one of my favorites across the franchise (admittedly partly due to nostalgia) because it doesn't shy away from creating a suspenseful, thrilling story filled with mystery and awe. While I will say that the Ultra games have good stories, they're overshadowed by how good the story was in Sun/Moon. Standalone, Ultra games are great, but because they have Sun/Moon backing them, they more or less live in its shadow

I agree that due to Necrozma issues, Lillie story development was cut short but when I saw Lusamine worried about the children... I saw that since she is no longer in control she subconsciously were able to be a responsible adult and let that petty issues to go away in order to be successful and be a good character.

From a content perspective, USUM is unquestionably better in every way. From a story perspective, it’s more mixed though. I prefer the presentation of choosing your starter and Lillie’s arc more in SM, but I enjoyed the extra depth the Ultra Recon Squad and their mission added, as well as various odd things like how Minna wasn’t a throwaway character and actually got a trial which in turn gave you more time with the other captains, and of course the Rainbow Rocket postgame story which was easily the coolest postgame story concept they’ve done; seeing charcters you’d never expect to interact with Gen 7 characters, like Ghetsis threatening Lillie, was amazing. I wish there was more consistency on Lusamine’s arc though because the complete overhaul on her motivations muddied how you are supposed to feel about her as a character; it isn’t to say USUM’s version is bad, actually I think it’s better, just that she didn’t feel like the same character between both versions and I wish she did. I feel like a lot of these issues could have been addressed by doing the sequel approach akin to B2W2 that has been suggested. Maybe have the protagonist from the first games having gone to Kanto to see Lillie, Rainbow Rocket is the driving villianous team for most of the story rather than postgame’s, and in the end your fight to be Champion is against the SM protagonist that has returned by the end. All of this is to say…I personally think both the originals and these are worth playing, just based on the different story elements going on, but if you are only picking one to play, I think USUM gets the edge because while the stories are similarly strong, the amount of content in USUM including wild Pokémon variety is better so you’ll get more out of it in the end.

They could have also changed the way the Necrozma plot worked. You beat the base Sun and Moon plot and then in DLC, the Ultra Recon squad comes in and tells you about Necrozma and then plot stuff plot stuff later, Necrozma should capture your box legendary that Lillie has you catch. It would be a so much more meaningful battle if Necrozma stole your own pokemon and you needed to go in and rescue it.

I still wish to this day that USUM was a sequel (maybe a year later at least) so it could still have kept the context of Lillie's family matters while keeping everything that made USUM as versatile and dynamic as it was compared to the first game, but even as someone who played Sun and Moon not too long before it, I loved these games very much even if they didn't surpass every hope and expectation I had. Story wise, I'd say Sun and Moon is a little more solid, but content wise (and in terms of my boy Hau's arc), I'd say Ultra Sun and Moon did a better job.

One year ago, I played my very first nuzlocke on UltraSun. Surprisingly, I had a much more fun experience (even with the plot, the depths of characters and changes of the trials and some areas) than I had with Pokémon Sun and Moon when I first played it, changing my perspective and appreciate UsUm much more now. Out of all Pokémon main-series titles on the 3DS, UsUm became my 2nd favorite, after Or/As. Since I did the nuzlocke, the ultra-games are what Sun&Moon should've been from the beginning and imo, UsUm made SuMo even more pointless. The only thing that still stands out in SuMo is Lilly's arc. And fairly enough, it was a cute one. But UsUm is able to give me so much more enjoyment than SuMo ever did. Very great job, thank you for this lovely review. 😊

Now... I'm the opposite. I played all the way through Moon but ultimately felt let down by it as a whole. Some aspects looked rough while others made it clear to me that there would be an enhanced version, which made me regret thinking there wouldn't be (sole reason why I got the base version, to begin with, as I usually go for the enhanced versions first). Fast forward to this year and I got UM for my birthday back in March. Though the first island was still just as annoying to get through, I did see signs of the improvements I wanted. By the time I reached the second, I was already feeling pretty good about it. I'm now at the fourth island and I'm having a blast. Had S/M come out in the state US/UM are in, I don't think there would've been much of a negative reception to gen 7, especially the expanded versions. I remember a lot of people being fed up that Nintendo was releasing yet another expansion as a full-priced game (even though they haven't done that since gen 4, or despite the fact that *no one* complains when Atlus does the same with Persona). This is the reason why gen 8 has DLC, which I think is a mistake cuz part of the reason for those expanded versions to exist is to smooth out the experience as a whole, not just add more content. Look no further than Platinum and how it addresses a lot of issues people had with D/P.

I think Ultra Sun and Moon were a breath of fresh air and gave new life to the Alola region. This is in stark contrast to the original Sun and Moon games, which introduced us to the Alola region as this fun, chill, laid back island adventure. USUM however flipped that on its head. The trailers implied that "The Alola you know is gone" and presented a much darker story. The poster with the protagonists, Gladion, Hau and Lillie holding a Pokeball all had very serious expressions on their faces. This really drove home the idea that there's bigger and stronger foes to face so you better bring your A-Game. Speaking of that, USUM's difficulty was a real step up from the original Sun and Moon, which were in no wise easy games. The Captains, Kahunas, Rivals, Totem Pokemon, Ultra Necrozma and the Rainbow Rocket Bosses all posed a serious challenge and I never got through a battle without losing at least one Pokemon. Speaking of the overall "darker" story, I like how serious things get in these games plot-wise. I don't think that the Ultra games are just another fun island adventure. The entire Alola region is in danger and there is great darkness you need to defeat. That darkness theme also could represent Team RR with the bosses that succeeded in their missions and wield their respective legendary Pokemon. Overall, I think these were more action packed, challenging Pokemon games than any others I've played, maybe except for Platinum. I feel like people give Ultra Sun and Moon more hate than it deserves and it's a crying shame.

I think I have a theory as to why, but it’s very loose. Most of the third versions have both box legendaries for the story mode, but there is only one Nebby. And yes, I know they could have added a second one to the plot somehow, but I think this plan worked out better in the end. It also allowed them to keep that really neat time mechanic they had for both versions, where moon was 12 hours apart from sun in game. Personally, I prefer the Ultra sequels, as they just have more stuff and, frankly, as the years have gone on, Lillie’s arc in the originals just kinda bores me, so the downgrades make room for some of my favorite upgrades in the series, like Mantine Surf and the Ultra Necrozma fight. Alola in my eyes needs to be both deep and exceptionally fun, which this does perfectly.

This was truly my favorite Pokémon game to play. And to this day I stand by it with all the added features they put. Mantine surfing,new Totem Pokémon to battle with,the post-game with Rainbow Rocket and catching legendaries in the Ultra wormhole. There were some negatives in the game I personally don't like but it never fault my experience with this game as much than S&M. Which to me Gen 7 US&UM is my personal favorite game of all time.

Gameplay wise I enjoyed Ultra. But Lillie’s arc being gutted and Lusamine being changed to a misguided but good person felt weird. Rainbow Rocket fell flat for me as well. In the end I think that I prefer the originals over Ultra.

Its kind of a pity how they failed to add breeding to the Ultra Beasts, now with Pokemon Bank and Home, those guys can go almost anywhere, especialy Sword/Shield and maybe soon BDSP and Legends, but I would give an arm and a leg to be allowed to breed my UBs so I could try something crazy like replaying Shield with a team entirely of UBs xD

I’ve never played the original just the ultra sun and moon and honestly didn’t have problems with the pacing at all… These games encompass everything I love though, tropical regions and sci fi so these were really great games for me plus primarina is my favorite Pokémon :) you haven’t posted in a year though did you leave Pokémon?

SM and USUM feel like they had the same issue as Phantom Hourglass/Spirit Tracks did in the Zelda series. Of course they have issues, but they're still intensely enjoyable. Hats off to you on another great vid 🎩

I really REALLY dug Moon, a lot. Great new pokemon, felt very fresh. Than they release US/UM a year later......and I skipped it, wholesale. I did buy it about a year later, just to simply own the "best version" of S/M. I started it and dropped it pretty quickly. But I've got it and next time I play through S/M many years from now, it will be with Ultra Sun and Litten.

Lillie's story in S/M was incredible to me and the ending got me a little emotional. The change to her story in USUM alone is enough for me to prefer S/M. Add in the fact that USUM are essentially just remakes, things that we shouldn't get until a decade after S/M, and they really just aren't necessary.

I still don't understand why people think Lillie's story is changed. One story she became a trainer, the other she leaves Alola. The only difference. She loses a few scenes but her story is still the same.

When I originally played Ultra Sun I played it immediately when it came out, right after playing Moon. And to be honest, I played myself. I battled every trainer and caught every catchable Pokémon as I progress and I was over leveled the whole game. Even Ultra Necrozma wasn’t challenging. I legit think I may have had 1 Pokémon faint AT MOST. I hate I can’t relate to everyone who always talk about how challenging it was. So, mid way through this video I paused and finally reset my 100% complete Ultra Sun. I’m gonna play it with Set over Shift Battle Style. Gonna turn off EXP. Share. And heck, I might even Nuzlocke it. But I’m kinda excited to give it another shot.

These games made two major mistakes. It’s more Sun and Moon in terms of handholding, which as you mentioned is awful if you just played the original, and they have two versions. B2W2 could get away with it since they were sequels, but USUM were just improved versions like Emerald and Platinum which means they literally released the same game 4 godforsaken times. Like seriously, WTF Gamefreak? That said they’re still better than Sun and Moon because despite all of that, Ultra Necrozma is one of my favorite fights in the whole franchise with my favorite theme.

In my opinion, Ultra SM are the best title in Gen 7. While I agree that the plot with Lillie in the first versions would have been great to leave in the Ultra titles, I was just as satisfied with the shift in the plot line that focuses on Necrozma, which gave us more insight on what it’s role is in the games. What I like about Ultra SM is that there was a lot more to to do (Ultra Wormholes, Rainbow Rocket, new Pokémon, and another epic legendary Pokémon boss battle).

Ultra-Necrozma really is the most difficult boss in pokemon. Unless you cheese it with Zoroark, use Focus Sash/Sturdy + Toxic, or sth. similar.

That water Pokémon was the best scene. After the beginning that was still long and boring, the surprise of just a single scene where a Pokémon I guess *eats* the totem Pokémon then fights you, it was so entertaining and exciting for really no reason.

Honestly, the USUM games gave me very conflicted thoughts on gen 7. The original SM games were so much fun to play through, and they were one of the few titles (the others being Emerald, Platinum and Black 2) that I kept playing months after beating their campaigns. Then USUM came along and left me feeling... underwhelmed. Like, why not make this a DLC addition? Or delay the original games a few more months and directly release these? USUM was also, to this day, the only game in the series that I've put down right after becoming Champion and clearing the post-game story. It just left me feeling drained for some reason, and I didn't know why. But I gave it some thought: USUM are basically the same game (with a few extra DLC-esq areas thrown in) for the first 3 islands, with only Poni Island being drastically different. SM, as a whole, felt like slightly incomplete games that were very satisfying to play through. On the flip side, USUM felt like genuinely complete games that just felt... ok. Not good. Not bad. Just ok. The titles as a whole just came out too soon while changing too little to make it feel like the time and money investment was worth it.

I never understood defending other definitive versions and then hating this one "because it could have been dlc" yeah the others could have just been complete games too and according to their definitive edition content they weren't. Still either way, USUM has more content added than all of them, from the word go, vanilla sm had more content than the definitive editions of other Pokemon games.

I honestly was a little spoiled when it comes to pokemon games I first started playing pokemon with BW which is still one of my favorites, but I honestly still love this game(once I get past the pokemon school, that is just painful!). I like the extended end game quests/storylines it reminded me a bit more of the end of BW where you have to find the sages for Looker. Overall I enjoy the game and the new pokemon and forms.

I really enjoyed Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and Gen 7 as a whole. Up there with Gen 5 in 'S' tier Pokémon games. I adored the Sci-Fi and beach adventure, and it's one I look forward to playing again during my down time. Also - in regards to your hair, have you ever gone like a soft grey? Just bought Ultra Sun today, mostly to shiny hunt the legendaries in the post game. I had almost no desire to play these games when they first came out in 2017 despite being a pretty big Pokemon fan. They felt cheap and lazy and too soon after Sun and Moon. Not to mention the Switch launch and Breath of the Wild the same year. But now, five years later, I'm ready to give it a shot!

Overall the Ultra games are the superior Alola experience, the little environmental upgrades make the world far more vibrant and full of life, the new features and characters improve what was already there, their biggest flaw was that they weren’t the original versions of the game and the fact they were released only a year later

I have a real soft spot for these games. They might be my favourite of the 3D Pokémon games, but with how much I enjoy SwSh, that title might be up for grabs. USUM was actually the first Pokémon game I got at launch, so that might be a factor. But anyway, great job on the video!🎩

I agree that Lillie's story arc was overall much better in Sun and Moon, but I prefer the story of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Idk, I guess it just feels more like a grand story, and one that actually revolves around YOU, the player/protagonist.

Back in 2017 I did live on stream in Ultra Moon! Ended up with Poipole, Celesteela, Guzzlord, Xurkitree, Pheramosa and Nihilego. Always meant to get Stakataka, but I never got the shiny Type: Null that Wicke gives you before you get access to more of Poni! Now I have Ultra Sun so maybe I’ll get Kartana (my favorite UB) Buzzwole and Blacephelon to complete the set!

The last high effort and challenging pokemon game before the messy gen8, Although They should have made it a sequel like B&W2 instead of a retelling. Just a 2 year timeskip would have been cool, Lillie could have taken over the aetherfoundation ,Gladion could have an N type story and Guzma could reconect with Kukuri. Hel we could even throw in a battle with the SM protagonists among the other chameos. Great game still, but you can see why it only sold half as mutch as the prior games had before it.

I dont think these games justify a full price after SM, but to anyone who didnt play gen 7 and is hesitating which version to buy - Id say get one of the ultra games. more wild pokemon, some new mechanics and areas and an overall more polished experience in my opinion. if I judge those games on their own Id say they are quite great (although I would cut some dialouge to make it less slow), but after playing sun and moon its just not quite worth the full price

Originally I had a whole section at the beginning of this video about how I actually preordered the collectors version because I firmly believed they’d be two distinct games, and then a fellow KZbin friend got the game early and told me I should just pick up one version cuz they’re basically an enhanced version. I ended up cutting it because it was a bit too clunky and made the intro like two minutes longer, but trust me, I think the marketing team got all of us good!0
