► Before Pokemon Diamond and Pearl released outside of Japan in 2007, a demo version was made available at certain gaming conventions, special events and retail stores. The demo gave western players their first chance to explore the Sinnoh region, placing new trainers on a demo exclusive variant of Route 203, with trainers using then new Pokemon such as Pachirisu and Cherrim. It also gave trainers three Pokemon of their own to use - Lucario, Mime Jr. and Roselia - with a special evolution event for Roselia at the end of the demo! Today, I'll be playing this demo, 13 years after it originally was available, and be breaking it - there is a lot more to this seemingly short 10 minute demo than meets the eye!

The game was programmed to make it come out that way if the evolution did not follow proper protocols. I might have read about it online somewhere involving the method of how the demo got coded. Someone possibly might have done it correctly while the kiosks were still there at the store.

This is a little late, but they probably didn't include the flash used to save on the cartridge, and then just removed the code that checks for that when booting up the game. Game Freak probably wouldn't have modified the save routines themselves since they would never be used. Because of all of this, when the game attempts to perform a save, it tries to communicate with the flash on the cartridge, but fails since there is none, giving the error you saw

I think I get why Lucario and Mime Jr evolved into Missingno. Roselia evolves through a shiny stone, so the code for using a shiny stone is what’s scripted to forcibly happen when you talk to Prof. Rowan. Because it’s a shiny stone evolution, it’s using the shiny stone evolutionary path and only Togetic and Roselia can evolve from a shiny stone; all other pokémon become Missingno.

Elio Guri If my theory is correct, yes. The other idea is that the evolution forces Roselia, if it’s in the party, or the first slot pokémon to evolve into Roserade which in turn creates Missingno. since Roselia is the only pokémon who has that evolutionary path. Only problem with this theory is that there are existing mods that change a pokémon’s evolutionary path; however, there’s the argument that those changes may have been coded to do so by the mod developers and that normally forcing a pokémon to evolve into something it’s not supposed to results in Missingno.

Have you tried walking all the way to the beginning of the actual game to see if any of the starting cutscenes and triggers would do anything? It would be interesting if the game attempted to "start" Diamond/Pearl like it would in the regular version, possibly giving you a starter pokemon or unlocking more menu options from ya mum.

What was really cool was how when Dialga was encountered and it showed the cutscenes of Sinnoh with the weird disco effect, the Team Galactic grunt was in front of the Valley Windworks because you never completed that event. This means that the game uses the camera angle to show different parts of Sinnoh rather than it just being some pre-made cutscene.

You mentioned that it may have taken a lot of effort to prevent the player from saving in the demo, but it's likely that the cartridge simply has no save memory. The likelihood is that there's some kind of flag in a rom that tells it whether or not its cartridge has save memory. Assuming they just disabled this hypothetical flag for the demo rom, it means that a save file isn't created, so it also doesn't save on an emulator or flash cartridge.

They didn't necessarily go through any effort to make sure you can't save; it could be that the cartridge simply doesn't have any writable memory to store the save file. But they didn't program the save function to expect that, because normally that part of the code would never actually run. So, if it does run, it doesn't know what to do and crashes with an error screen.

1. I have an idea, go to the place you get your starter, then you will receive the Pokédex, will it show up? 2. Try to hack in a way to teleport to the event islands. 3. Try to trade with a normal diamond/pearl 4. Try to evolve Pokémon like Shinx, or Pokémon that were introduced in the game, (Lucario was already evolved, mr.mime was not introduced in that game) 5. Give yourself park balls/communicate with a Pokémon GBA game and transfer the Pokémon up to the demo.

If I had to hedge my bets as to what was going on with Rowan's evolution thing, I'll try to explain. In the games, evolution is saved as a list. Normally, that list is one item long, but because many pokemon have branching evolutions the list can be made longer. But another thing is that these lists have no restriction on having two different ways to evolve into the same pokemon. So what the devs might've done was that they added a second evolution to Roselia that was just in the next slot, and made Rowans event trigger evolution 2, which Mime Jr wouldn't have. To check, just bring any pokemon with a split evolution to him.

This is actually really wild that today is my birthday (July 5th) and I am seeing this video in my recommendations . I played this demo when I was 9 years old at the toy r us in time square. my sister saw how much I enjoyed it/liked the series that she bought the game for me while I was playing it. And in the rare instances where I've forgotten to change it back to being the registered item, I just go into the bag, re-register it and just get on it there. It's a nice attempt by them to make the bike more accessible without needing it to be registered but those posts needed to be in more places. Maybe one having a Trainer Tips sign near it that told you specifically what they are.
