UglyNova Games well cause Japanese stars take stiff hits remember NJPW & other Japanese wrestling is different from WWE & American and other wrestling most of NJPW no sells to make it look real if they're stars Shibata & Ishii they'll mostly no sell cause they're stiff

Great freaking stuff. I remember a TNA live event back in the early days, there was a match with several people that was going all over the place, and I noticed that Justin was selling even when no one was on him. He was making his way back to the ring and the main action was elsewhere, but he was still selling that he was in the middle of an exhausting fight.

Frankie Lancaster was the MASTER of selling. He wasn’t afraid to look humiliated and that’s the art of a wrestler that sells great. Ricky Steamboat sold well but on occasion over sold to the point it looked cartoonish.

Great clip Justin!! I'm not a wrestler, but I've never understood why people have so much difficulty with this... I HATE when a guy completely no sells the assault on a body part, like you mentioned. Even when the match is over, the guy should be limping or when the ref goes to raise the winners arm the winner shoos them off like "no, my arm is messed up." Would love to see you go into the difference between heel selling and face selling. As a face you want sympathy, as a heel you want to slightly exaggerate everything a little more to make the babyface look that much better.

Justin, around the 4:00 mark, you mention that most of the moves actually do hurt somewhat. How does a wrestler determine when he's sold enough, hasn't sold enough, or if he's overselling? Where's that fine line? What determines that? Also, is it hard to stay focused and in character in terms of remembering that "your knee is injured" and whatnot or is it fairly easy? Thx! :)

Awesome points being made here. Selling is a very important aspect of the business that seems to be lost on some guys. I'm glad Justin mentioned Sabu because he was a fantastic seller. He made everything look so believable by not under selling, and at the same time not being so over the top that it just looks silly.

This is my problem with John Cena's signature, the 5 knuckle shuffle. If you're caught between the mat, and John Cena's fist, that shit's gonna hurt, you aren't going to get up immediately and walk into his AA. I know, that's a way to transition into the AA, but sell it first.

When I had a training session with Alex Shane he said that trainers used to lock on submissions for real so you would know how to sell that exact move, which I think is a great concept, I know that when selling-while I can sell, I'm guilty of selling two entirely different moves in the same way. I'm not a particularly stiff worker, but if the guy I'm working with is just standing there while I'm wrenching on a headlock... I'm going to squeeze the buggers head a little to get a squeak at least.

Oh man there is nothing that frustrates me more than a comeback after the face has had a body part worked over, and he/she doesn't acknowledge the injury. To add to Tommy Dreamer...when I was a kid and they were playing off the herniated disc angle...you could feel the agony that Tommy was in. To the point that to this day I can't tell if it was a work of shoot. The images of him in absolute pain during his matches and how he sold that injury is still burned into my memory.

Selling really is super important. The no sell can work sometimes too but only when the story in the match calls for it. Otherwise it becomes annoying to see someone get whooped throughout the whole match and the come back like nothing happened. That's why lots of fans hated Cena.

Hi. This stuff is awesome. I have a question that maybe you can explain. In the new Triple H dvd, Steve Regal is on there saying that when he first saw HHH, his one criticism of him was that he had "horrible footwork." I was very curious as to what he meant by this? Thank you very much, and best of luck I used to come to watch you in the ECW arena all the time. Great times. Thanks again. - Joe

I remember Undertaker when changed his gimmick a little before WM13 when he beat Sid for the title, they took Paul Bearer and the urn that gave him his powers away. It's been said in the early 90's that the reason him "no selling" worked so well for him is because back then he hard time selling good. I love Taker but at WM13 in that match with Sid he over did it! lol. I mean he sold like Steamboat did better then Steamboat. I mean I got that they took the urn away so now he feels pain like humans do but wow! I was screaming the TV. "You're still almost 7 feet tall and 300 pounds!" Sid punched him and taker sold it like he got stabbed lol I love Undertaker though, much respect to the Dead Man.

Hogan and Taker going beast mode was part of their gimmicks; Hogan would feed on the crowd's energy and it would allow him to "Hulk up" while Taker was channeling his powers to heal/boost himself. Cena, on the other hand, was supposed to be like Rocky Balboa: a dude who could take an insane amount of punishment and not quit but still be hurt in the course of battling back. Cena's like a reverse Bret Hart: good on the mike but a mediocre wrestler.

Know why I don’t ‘ buy’ into wrestling nowadays?? Cause they ain’t ‘selling’ me anything. I can’t understand how a simple move like a DDT back 25 years ago was promoted as a seriously devastating finisher of a match, and now guys and gals are kicking out @ 2 1/2 from like a Falcon Arrow’ off a ladder onto a chair just for a “This is Awesome” chant

billy gunn was the funniest seller lol like when stone cold use to stun him back in the late 90's he would jump up in the opposite direction with a funny look on his face and fly to the other side of the ring lol he did that alot in different matches against other wrestlers too like when someone would do something simple like throw his head into a turnbuckle haha just watch the old videos you'll see what I'm talking about, over selling but still entertaining (and thats the name of the game) and funny as hell too

Its so damn frustrating to try a move to somebody who cant sell... My friend who cant wrestle sold the spear really good, then i tried it on somebody else... (bigger then me) he gets completely scared and kicks me out of a shock while i am doing to the spear, with hi's knee. So yeah after that i was injured and couldnt train the Spear anymore, same thing as the RKO... he doesnt come with me, he thinks that if grab him at he's neck, he will just wait until he falls down by the weight... my god he is so bad, even my fish could sell a Back Suplex. I never injured myself because of a mistake made by me.... and im only 13.
