In Italia nessuno si ricorda di questa partita. Dopo aver eliminato Argentina e Brasile, questa semifinale è stata vissuta come una semplice formalità. Tutti eravamo sicuri che saremmo arrivati in finale. Avevo 21 anni e si respirava un'aria particolare.

The backstory of paolo rossi that year was amazing. Rossi just finished a long suspension. It was two long years on allegation of match fixing(can anybody confirm that?). His striking partner the great roberto bettega got injured just before the tournament. Rossi was great in mundial 78, but in 1982 critics were not kind to him. The three group matches justified his critics but suddenly vs Brazil he exploded into a world class striker. The rest is history as the saying goes.

more precisely : a couple of his club mates were in the fixed matches business , Rossi was not part of it but he was penalized x not denouncing them as he was aknowledged about the affair. An expiat. goat....

@@carlobrotto7132 are U Italian? Interesting facts. About a week before the 2006 WC in Germany, a sportswriter wrote about the similarities about that squad with the 1982 squad. The were problems of match fixing in the Seria A, players being investigated, expectations were low and some other issues which I forgot. The writer wrote that 2006 might win the cup , which they actually did. Amazing. Could you corroborate this story?

@@eddyjohan8650 yeah I'm Italian, otherwise I could I know all the story about Rossi and his desqualif. in 1980? The difference between the 2 situations is relevant : that of 2006 involved mainly one team Juventus and the football federation head bosses ( along with some referees) which was the opposite in 1980. Problems of match fixing and other scandals are in all major leagues , from Bundesliga ( same year 2006) to spanish liga ( osasuna has been excluded from 2023/24 european cups x match fixing ) to Premierleague ( clubs bribing players' agents, match fixing involving past players like Owen,taxes evaluation, minor age players scandals), the difference with serie A is that in here they made a bit of clean up in past yrs, in all other leagues they covered up everything each time,playing the role of honest & moral suasor, which is a farce ! 😄 This happened even in denmark some years ago, when they caught 4 clubs of danish league fixing home matches, but they did absolutely nothing ... That's how things work at FIFA and in Europe.

You don't know that. It was the year of a Giant scandal involving a referee named Byron Moreno. He was paid off to help Japan and South Korea. Every call was against ltaly it was so Obvious. 100% FIXED.. ITALY was very strong.💪🇮🇹. I'm not saying they would have been Champions. But Definitely Fixing and Cheating was involved.. Terrible.👎

Po wielu latach wyszły na jaw też nieco inne fakty - nasi przed półfinałem ostro zabalowali. Żmuda mówił o tym kilka lat temu, że było dużo imprez i kiepskie warunki hotelowe. Oczywiście brak Bońka, niewystawienie Szarmacha również miały duże znaczenie.

Italy 2-1 over Argentina, 2-0 over Poland and 3-1 over West Germany. Italy won these three games very handily, little pressure or doubt or questionable call. Only Italy vs Brazil was very tight game.

Zico si e' lamentato ma per l'episodio della maglietta stracciata, niente che ti potrebbe mandare all'ospedale. Maradona invece, abituato alle marcature criminali a lui riservate in Spagna ed Argentina, ha fatto i complimenti a Gentile.

The uruguayan ref was too tolerant to the hard fouling by poland, that was the only thing they could oppose to italy's dominance. Rossi was the most lethal striker of the 70s & 80s decades, he first invented the role of opportunistic striker, his genial sense of goal is something unsurpassed still today. All strikers ( lineker comprehensive )in following yrs just tried to suit paolo rossi's steps , so to score Rossi style goals, but obviously the #1 and king was the italian player !

This was really Poland's weakest game in this tournament. Partly because Boniek didn't play, he was pausing because of two yellow cards. But in my opinion it was mostly because Poland inside were still celebrating the elimination of the Soviet Union. Mind you, this was 1982, Poland was in the middle of the martial law. A Soviet controlled military regime, imposed by brute force against an overwhelming majority of Polish people. With tanks in the streets, thousands in jail and dozens killed. Eliminating the Soviet Union was a big political event, maybe even more important than the semifinal.
