I proudly present you my fifth Polandball/Countryball animation about, as I promised you, the modern history of Romania. The result of those 2 month of intense work is this video, but before commenting, here are some indications:
-About the tank during WWI: watch closely :p
-Yes, in 2007 Croatia wasn't in EU but I already made a lot of images until I noticed this little error.
-Please, don't start a fight with someone if he says that Ivanovici was Serbian and not Romanian or the other way, just enjoy the music!

For those wondering about the historical events presented in the video: 0:03 to 0:22 refers to the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 in which the Romania joined the war on the side of the Russian Empire in order to obtain independence (at that time it was de jure a vassal of the Ottoman Empire) after the Russian advance in Bulgaria was stalled at the siege of Plevna and the Tsar himself requested the aid of the Romanian army after 2 failed assaults on fortified fortress. Romania officially became a kingdom in 1881. 0:22 to 0:54 refers to the condition of the Romanian peasant before WW1 and the Peasant Revolt of 1907 in which was considered to be one the bloodiest revolts in the country's history (at 0:48. To put it shortly, the Romanian peasants revolted because of the inequality of land distribution : around 48% of all arable land was owned by a few thousand landowners while 52% was distributed for around 3 million people, this distribution of land was not enough to sustain a good living and many of them had to work on the wealthy landowner lands to feed their families. The revolt claimed an estimated 10000 lives and forced the politicians of that time to consider the situation seriously about the agrarian reform which was implemented only after WW1. 0:54 to 1:00 modernazation of Romania with the construction of roads, railways and improved industry ( particulary the oil industry which made Romania a big exporter of grains and oil, situation that would continue until WW2). "Drumuri noi" literally means "New Roads". 1:00 to 1:20 WW1 in which Romania joined in 1916 on the side of the Entente with the goal of getting Transylvania from Austria-Hungary. While the initial offensive was succesful, German intervention with fresh reinforcements, coupled with a long front to defend ,poor training, poor equipment and leadership meant that by the spring 1917 only Moldova remained unoccupied by the Central Powers. 1917 was an year of stalemate where the Romanian Army with the aid of Russian troops (at the least in the initial stages of the battles of July -August 1917) stopped the CP offensives but the Russian Revolution meant that Romania had to sign the Treaty of Bucharest with harsh conditions but the victory of the Entente reversed the situation. 1:21 onwards: Reconstruction after the war 1:30 War against the Hungarian Soviet Republic. 1:33 -2:03: Interwar period marked by initial economic growth, followed by the Great Depresion which severely affected the economy and the people (at 1:44 the sign "Vindem acasă pentru bani" (acasă = home should replaced by casă = house) = (We/I) sell house for money) , followed by the 30's with a lot of political instability with numerous goverments coming and falling and the rise of extreme left and right movements ( for the right represented by the Iron Guard at 1:53 ( Naziștii în Reichstag = The Nazi in Reichstag , at 1:47 the newspaper says: Vocea Poporului = Voice of the People and Străinii Afară = Out with the foreigners (in general ethnic minority)). 2:08: WW2 with Polish refugees crossing the border to Romania ( at that time Poland and Romania were allies and Romania asked the Poles if they should join the fight, but they prefered a neutral Romania in order to maintain a stable line of supply). 2:11: Trapped between 2 giants: After the fall of France, Romania lost its main ally and was forced to cede territory to the USSR (Bessarabia and N.Bucovina), Hungary (Northern Transylvania) and Bulgaria ( Southern Dobrogea). After these loses Ion Antonecu becomes dictator of Romania (2:14) and chose to join Germany to reclaim Bessarabia, fighting all the way to Stalingrad but in 1944 Romania changed sides after King Michael's Coup and the arrest of Antonescu. 2:22-2:32 the struggle for power in late 40's ,early 50's in People's Republic of Romania that saw numerous political leaders including (Lucrețiu Pătrăscanu, Ana Pauker,Vasile Luca) gaining and falling out of favour with the Soviet leaders (who basically dictated who should be in power and who falls out of favour) until Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej became the undisputed leader in 1952. 2:34: 60's and 70's heavy industrialization of the country in which Nicolae Ceaușescu became the leader in 1965 (at 2:41) and followed a more "independent" foreign policy compared to the general direction of the Communist Bloc forging warm relations with the West ( at 2:43) and China and North Korea (at 2:45) 2:47: late 70's and 80's in which Romania accumulated a lot of foreign debt that Ceaușescu (who became more megalomaniac and wished to follow the path of N.Korea (at 2:49 his megalomaniac project Casa Poporului ="People's House/Palace that saw the destruction of a fifth of Bucharest as buildings were raised to make room for something so big and useless) ) decided to pay through austerity measures that heavily denied Romanians basic commodities (food and gasoline were rationed as people had to sit at hours long queue for food that run out quickly (2:54 Închis = Closed, at 2:58, Nu mai (e/este) stoc = Out of stock)) which lead to the bloody Romanian Revolution that saw the execution of Ceaușescu and his wife in December 1989. 3:10 onwards: Economic Growth and ascension to the EU.

Economic growth? This video missed Iliescu and his miners who killed the people protested against what he was doing. He sold the state industry of Romania at the price of rusty iron and because of him, even today, all the left sided Romanian political parties have a bad image. Just after that Romania went in a financial crisis and needed to join EU for help to borrow money to keep its economy afloat. Now it is a bad habit for most of the right sided political parties to borrow huge amouts of money for stupid ambitions.

Everything in this video is great: First of all, the most remarquable things are the drawings ! They are all done on paint ! All those details, those colors, I cant imagine how long it must have took to realise them ! Then the images mach perfectly with the music, wich is really dificult to do. Actually it was better when there was monarchy. Much less focus for the king on how to escape safely after he's done with leading the country because no secret services (only brought to us by comunism) could punish him for actions he didn't do. We took it back in '41 with Barbarosa, but it fell back to the soviets in '44. Stalin gave us Transylvania back as a reward for the king' s coup, but separated Moldova forever since.

OP CSÖCS imádó I didn´t meant in the terms of territorial expansion or annexation, or whatever may be included under the term "Empire". I meant in the term of having a complicated history. With people of the same stock killing eachother, where leaders are betraying eachother in order to gain power, where all ideologies you can think of passed through Romania and left a huge mark on it. The Habsurg Empire never had niether communism or facism. Never massacred it´s own people or minorities on a large scale. That´s why Romanian´s history is, alongside with Russia´s history, the two most complicated history in Europe. I did not mean greatest history or most accomplished history, but definitely the most complicated and diffcult to understand why it´s so complicated.
