Thank you for another fascinating insight into the strange life of Russians. A new car may be better when you picked a loser. According to statistics the alcoholism rate among Russian men is 37%. I use Google translate in comments mostly to irritate the trolls as I teach them an accurate version of their own history and accidentally found myself communicating with an average Russian woman and she said that I didn't understand how hard it is to find a good man in Russia. So in some cases it is a love match, I've come across those in cell intercepts, but for the most part POWs interviewed are divorced. I did a bit of research and found out that alcohol is not the only problem. Drug use is as high as alcoholism and Russia is suffering an epidemic of AIDS and Hepatitis C which is from sharing dirty needles with someone who has one or both. So it is indeed slim pickings to find a normal fellow who can hold down a job and take care of his family. Oddly, alcohol and drug use is not prevalent in woman in Russia alcoholism is at 7% but no statistics on drug use so if you marry someone if they aren't a drunk or drug addict its like winning the lottery.

As a rule, the Ruzzian government are quite embarrassed by the rates of alcoholism, drug use, and a spiralling AIDS epidemic. They tend to "massage" the figures a bit. Most First World countries have got a grip on the AIDS situation, and with retroviral drugs, safe sex, no needle sharing, rates are really falling. Of course, if you live in a country that flat out doesn't give a shit about you, treats you like slabs of meat, steals from your national insurance, pensions, disability payments, then perhaps you *would* turn to alcohol or drugs. Like all great works are inspired by something just how similar his work is to our reality is the scary part.
