That's cool that the captain came out to wave to the crowd and the got a little happy with the horn as well. I remember as a kid in the 70's when we would go on a trip we were always trying to get the big trucks to sound the air horn , with the symbolic motion at the window seminly pulling the horn cable..... I don't think many kids know that motion nowadays. It was always appreciated when the truckers would blow the horn for us. seems kinda the same for the big ships.

Another great video Mike ! One of these days you’ll have to dust off your snow boots 🥾, Sure means a lot when a captain get’s frisky with the horn , that means a lot .

You are not kidding, I definitely will have to dust off those snowshoes. There’s no snow on site right now. I’ll keep recording the ships though.

These ships sail till the locks in the Soo close ?
@vibewithmike10 ай бұрын
@jepsdog3859 great question, yes, it will be sailing until the locks close. As per federal orders, the Soo Locks close on January 15 and re-open March 25 every year. During this time maintenance is performed on the chambers. Although there are occasional exceptions, such as ice, these two dates are pillars for shipping season in the Great Lakes. As soon as the clock strikes midnight on March 25, freighters, tugboats, luxury crafts and more can resume lockage between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. What a grand video! I love the pivot, too, it looks like they are “turning on a dime” they just glide right through it. I know you want snow. Does the canal totally freeze over? Or does the water flow keep it open? We have a Canal here in my town that is open all Winter. Once, when I was a small child, I recall big chunks of ice moving through it. FOUR salutes and the Captain came out to see the people!
@vibewithmike10 ай бұрын
We definitely should have big chunks of ice floating through the canal right now Robin. And the canal does freeze over at a certain point. However, this year I still believe it will but I’ll believe it when I see it. It’s been an odd winter for sure.

Will the lift master ever let you the bridge house to video while a ship comes through? That would be awesome. I've always wanted a Lake Superior chart map, even though I live in Alaska now.
@vibewithmike10 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll ever get into the Lethbridge operation center because if they let one KZbinr and then all the other KZbinrs would be able to get access. I’m just a regular guy with the camera. However, you never know. Let’s see what happens.

Hey Mike! Sad for you guys that there is no snow yet but I am sure it will be there in time for Christmas! Thank you for the museum tour! Seems like an interesting place! Seems like the December vibe has kicked in! People are just hanging around and relaxing. If I get bridged I would go get something quick from Grandma's haha! I was about to say its amazing how silently she goes by and BAMMMMMMMMMM she got me hahaha! Four salutes! What a guy! Hope you have a great day brother! Be well and be blessed!

Hey Mike, kind of a grey day in Dtown with no snow. It is about 39 degrees here in Bismarck, and snow is melting. Nice view under the Hidh bridge. I remember that big pile of coal, and every once in a while you would see Big Caterpillers working the pile as coal does spontaneously combusts and start smoking. Those big cats would go up the pile to break up the clumps that were smoldering. This ship will take the coal from Coalstrip Mt. to most likely CoEd near Detroit.
@vibewithmike10 ай бұрын
Chuck, 39° is really not that bad for Bismarck this time of year. It’s pretty crazy just like us here in Duluth with the weather.

Thanks Mike! I love saying this statistic...Indiana Harbor is carrying about 770 rail cars of coal. A train that would be over 6.7 miles long.

@@vibewithmike A typical city block is 330 feet by 660 feet. If you took one of those beautiful brick factory buildings, in downtown Duluth, 1.5 blocks long by 105 feet wide, by 5 stories tall, and filled it with coal, that is about how much a fully loaded Indiana Harbor can carry.
