Who knew that a ship could drag so many people worldwide through the process of the five stages of grief. As we cherish the memories, we will have to wait for the process of inspection to complete and then we will know the next chapter for the Michipicoten. Most importantly, ole Michi took care of her crew like she always does. Such a fitting video tribute for the love that surrounds the Michipicoten. Thank you Mike.

Little story for you I once rode a car ferry with my folks from Cape May New Jersey to Delaware biggest ship I have ever been on. This has got to be one of my most favorite videos and I'd have to say also that this is a important video as well, showing this proud old boat bringing her crew in safely after such a scary incident. I hope really hope they are fixing her up I haven't heard any news whatsoever. And seeing the Ryerson sitting there to was very awesome to see. I'd love to see that boat up close and see it out on the lakes. I swear if I was an owner of one of these companies I'd have least one old ore boat all fixed up like a new penny cruising the lakes with some passengers and also if I was an owner I'd have a Facebook page set up for each of my ships in the fleet with active updates, video and pictures of what's going on with the ship. There's a wide open market for this kind of tourism and I'm kinda surprised no-one has thought about that yet. Yes you may take my idea and use it but I at least want a spot on the boat lol for its first tour with passengers.

First....thanks so much Mike for producing this fine video. Not only was the content excellent, but also was the picture and sound quality. I'm trying my best to remain positive about the fate of this classic laker. That is not easy to do considering the situation. That summary/timeline of events was nice. One other noteworthy event was when the sister ship Manitoulin picked up her load of taconite pellets while docked at the Keefer Terminal in Thunder Bay. This cargo was then delivered to the Algoma Steel Mill in Saut Saint Marie, Canada. This happened during the weekend of June 15. Boy was the salty flying out of the canal. Just about as quick of a departure I've ever watched! No doubt not wanting to hold up the Michipicoten arrival. And if you look closely at the current light at 5:15, it appears to have changed from amber to green. Kind of interesting. Again, thanks Mike for doing this video. And staying with coverage to give the tug Helen H the credit her crew deserves. You did a marvelous job documenting possibly her last arrival. She is called the Soo Express because of her many, many trips back and forth from Duluth to the Algoma Steel Mill. The Michipicoten is probably the most frequent visitor to the Twin Ports in the last few years. So easy to take her for granted. This just goes to show you that each and every ship needs to be appreciated....because you just never know.

What a somber and moving sight, to see this ship with an uncertain future slowly making its way through the channel, with the tug nearby to assist if needed. I know we are all hoping that the crack can be fully mended in a way that will ensure safe operation, and not endanger any lives. These ships are such objects of beauty and grace, and stir our emotions as they bravely strike out for the blue waters, and disappear where the horizon meets the sky. I think that may be why we feel distress and sadness at even the thought of their destruction, when we wouldn’t be much moved at all at the sight of a junked car or other conveyance. (Some people may, of course- but am speaking in a general sense). Please keep us updated on the attempted (and hopefully successful) repairs on the Mishipicoten. Thank you for sharing this with us. (Your boat is also wonderful in enabling us to get “up close and personal” in so many situations! I’m sure that you are really enjoying it, too.

Mike, just another awesome video from you, what can I say from myself and many others? A million thank you's. As I was watching the people come in to view I was wondering how many are there as tourists and how many, like you, know all what goes on with these ships as they traverse the canal and waterways day after day. The thing I love about what you do is a great job of videoing and speaking as the events happen, you are there for those of us who can't be but want to be. I know sometimes people live vicariously through others, and as you are there and speaking it is as if I, and I'm sure many others, feel as if we are right there with you, so realistic to being there. Hi Mike boat friends When i first heard the michipacoten was going to Frazers i wondered if you were going ti get a chance to see it ? WOW ! not only did you get to see it your video and step by step history of events of how the ship got there are exceptional ! The hand over from the Canadian tug escort To the American tug escort The lights on the horizon! The monent of silence for a fallen warrior ! Watching it slip silenty by in the dark ! Mabe the final blast for the bridge ? Then the follow up video from the boat friends boat ! Your videos are world class Mike ! Speculation of the ships future has run amok ! First it was thought they hit some thing ? Historians scoffed at the ideal of them hitting sometimg in over 100 fathoms of water ? I had visions of a missing fisking tug sitting on the bottom ! ( in the1990s the ice breaker Griffen ran over the fish tug Captain K ) The icebreaker won !) Or mabe a channel buoy that broke loose and drifted out in the lake ? They lay horizontal iike a under water drone It could do some damage ! ( in the ocean a shipping container ) When it was flooding and they were getting on there survival suits they must of been a little conserned ! And a sigh of relief when they got the pumps on it and it started leveling out ! We just watched the Gott In the channel It Gott was right there lending a hand ! The odd time in lake erie a small boats engine will die and drift across the border Thr coast guard will tow them back to the border and hand them over to the coast guard on the other side The escort tug exchange reminded me of that If saved the michipacoten Might come back with a reinforced hull like the Cayuga ? I went to this great restaurant called the midnight diner and I even went to the NASCAR Hall of Fame downtown Charlotte. Your wife is right, I approach each of my videos like a live news reporter with any news story. I call it how I see it. There are a lot of videos where it’s silent. That’s totally fine. People can stick with that if they don’t like all the talking. I talk and I talk about what I see. Thank you so much for your wife. The big difference is being right next to Lake superior. You can be less than a mile away on top of the hill and it’s a 20° increase in temperature. If you’re down that the lakes superior it can be 70° up on the hill and it can be 50° down next to the lake.

GOD BLESS A SAILOR. I feel like they will fix this ole Great Lakes worrier. It is probably way cheaper to fix her and not loose that much tonnage. She is an old war horse for sure! Built in 1952 you say Mike? She has paid for herself 100 times over. I’m in Mississippi and my love of big ships started in 1980 while working with a seismic survey company in The Gulf of Mexico. Just seeing such massive ocean going super tankers and freighters and container ships, awe inspiring is all I can say! When your on a 125’ to 200’ supply boat and it is dwarfed by such huge ships you can only be fascinated. Thank you so much for making these videos, I accidentally ran across one on my page and it just happened to be a video you made about the Paul R. Yep, Mike, you threw the bait out there in the form of your video that you snagged me, and you SET THE HOOK AND THEN REELED ME IN! Now you have me watching Great Lakes freighter videos every night! You evil dastardly big boat video man! 😂 Again thank YOU for the giving of your time in making these videos! Living fairly close to Memphis, Tn and Greenville, Ms I should and would love to make you a couple of videos of some, what I call "super push boats and super tugs" pushing huge barges laden with huge amounts of freight, from crushed rock to wheat and soy beans and corn and everything in between.

Hey Mike and all the Global Boat Friend Nation, from a cool, windy and rainy Bismarck. Missed the live show, and what a show it was as the injured Michipicoten coming back to Duluth for what could very well be the last time. This vessel is 72 years old, the same as me, and has been a workhorse on the Big Lake for all these years. I would venture to say this vessel probably has some sort of record for round trips to Michigan or thereabouts every season. This is a small ship as Lakers go, even after being stretched out years ago. The thing that kept her relavant was when it was converted to a self unloader and that meant it was a lot easier to unload thus making it able to make the rapid turnarounds. But age does factor in, as well as the shear number of loads it has carried. The iron and steel is like I say 72 years old, and that metal being that old does get brittle, and subject to cracking as was seen here. It was lucky this happened in calm seas, rather than a severe storm or we may have had a Fitzgerald type incident very easily. I think the popular sentiment would be to see her get repaired and back in service, but in all reality the price to fix well enough to pass muster will most likely be far too much to make it work. Interesting to see the Rierson tied up close makes you wonder why someone would not spend money and fix that vessel to get it back on the Lake again. If the Michipicoten not able to be repaired, it is only fitting she rests here in Duluth where she made so many safe voyages in the past, and her remains can be recycled into another Great Lake Vessel and sail again. She was able to keep the crew safe, as she has done so many times in the past, a great Legacy in its own right if that is what is to be…….. Michipicoten, you will be remembered and never forgotten………….

She glided into the canal with dignity, majesty, and almost a sense of purpose.Nice to see some of her fans out cheering and applauding at 2300. The moon lending respect to the jubilant procession. Old? Sure doesnt show, I haveseen as much wear and tear on much newer and much less impressive ships. I chose to think, with the shortage of vessels she will be repaired and returned to th Great Lakes to continue for a time her lifes mission. She has a new motor and though damaged, steel can be replaced. Kenny, thanks for the comment on a Saturday friend. I’ve seen this vessel so many times and I really hope we get to see it many many more times to come after it gets fixed. However, I’m no expert and a lot of people are concerned that this might be the last time we ever see it hauling cargo.👍⛴️

Great job covering this historic moment. Also, great to meet you in person in the canal the other evening! Keep up the great work, Mike!

It was an honor being able to record this ship, possibly arriving for the last time. Most importantly, it was the final part of the story regarding the ship that we have been following for the last two weeks. It was wonderful seeing it arrive safely in Duluth.

You’ve done another great job in capturing this somewhat sad moment in maritime history, thank you, Mike. This ship is almost as old as I am and hopefully we both have a number of years to go. Let’s hope the extent of the damage isn’t that bad so she can sail on. Ron

Absolutely, here’s too many many more years for you and the ship. If I hear any type of update, Ron, I will let you know man.

What was it like in Duluth in the 60s? I’ve seen so many videos or there’s literally nothing by the lift bridge besides the dirt parking lot.
