Public Service Announcement - did you know that Polarfleece is practically waterproof???
I get a lot of people asking my advice on rugging their horses, particularly people who are having problems with manes being rubbed out and trying to regrow them.
It was a very wet day at my place yesterday (you can hear the rain on my shed in the video) and we had quite a few very heavy downpours and hail as well. I put both of my boys out in a synthetic rug and polarfleece neck rug.
When I recommend polarfleece neck rugs to people because they're:
~Warm
~Light
~Practically waterproof
I usually get a very surprised response.
So I shot this quick video to show you how dry our pony was after the weather yesterday. He was out in it all day for over 9 hours.
Heavy rugs, particularly with cotton combo's or neckrugs underneath are a recipe for rubbed out manes. Synthetic & canvas rugs are a popular option but again, the weight can result in rubbed manes and they're difficult to wash.
In saying that, no matter which rugs you use, you do still need to take them off, groom and care for your horses mane and wash the rugs or it's likely that you'll still have problems. Dirt, oil and rugs left on for long periods of time will still result in matted manes and hair being rubbed out, no matter what rugs you use.
I love the HSE Liquid Silk as a detangling and shine serum and I find that it's brilliant for adding that bit of slip to the hair to help stop manes matting and rubbing.
For those of you trying to regrow rubbed manes, you can't go past HSE HG Serum ;)
ETA: because so many people have been contacting me to ask - these are the Zilco Defender Neck Sock and they're usually about $45. I bought mine from Kingstons Horse Supplies a few years ago now. Your local Horseland can get them in and a quick google showed that they're available direct from Zilco plus a bunch of other websites too.
