I know this video is a few years old, but I have to say, you impressed me by a couple things. One is that you don't let on that you know everything like alot of people do, when in reality they don't. Second, you sure do a great job at figuring things out for yourself, and you done a darn good job at explaining things. Again, I am very impressed.

I just did a top-end rebuild and thought I was going to have to remove the crankcase cover to align the timing chain as I didn't know about the "T" marking in the peephole! This helps a ton! Nicely done!

Good information, it may help me with the removal of a timing chain sprocket bolt which came loose and fell into the engine, I have not been able to locate it as yet, but this may have led me into removing the flywheel and looking behind it. Thank you for taking your time to produce your video and I hope you make lots of money with it.

You did a great job explaining it. As a powersports mechanic in my opinion the fact that Polaris marked the cam chain links was a stupid idea. The chain links should never be used to determine the timing even though that's how its done in the polaris shop manual. I have worked on countless brands and never seen it anywhere else. When I do these engines I ignore the links.

i've had some hondas and yamahas with the same thing. colored links. and you count the links in between them. i believe a wr450 and wr426f is like this. and certain crfs i believe i cant remember off hand

Set the cams on a kz900 and don’t bother counting the links in between the cam marks. One kick or push on the button and bam! Your Done. Start ordering more parts. Cuss yourself. Now go tell your wife what you have done and how much it cost you.

thx !! awsome vid. Yesterday i bought a "fixer upper" Sportsman 500. Cleaned the carb. I have a great spark too. Spark plug becomes wet so i have fuel going in for sure but.... No start. Sometimes a POP but thats it !!!! Not even close to an engine start !!!Going to check the cam/crank alignement as per your vid. Hope all is ok with the engine. If all is good, going to tear down the carb.....for the 5th time in one day !! :( Thx again !!!

Make sure to get those top sprocket bolts torqued down to speck because i just had to crack the case to replace the oil pump and all due to the nut coming off from the impeller and breaking the spindle. I got everything right except those 3 bolts and 1 came out and broke the timing chain. Now I get to do this with the motor still installed in a ranger. To replace the oil pump the motor has to be pulled and the case cracked open. $160 for a new chain. 😢

Great video!! If your timing is not lined up like your video shows, how do you go about lining it up? Do you have to take the chain off and turn the cam wheel until it’s lined up and then put the chain back on? Please let me know how to line it up if they both are off. Thank you. GConn

I’m pretty certain it wasn’t lose, I know that answer doesn’t help you much , but if it was very lose at all, it would’ve thrown a red flag to me .... still racking my brain trying to remember. I’m hoping you have the correct chain ..... I have no idea about the variations with different models .... but there’s always a chance that you were given the incorrect part ....
