To generate melodies randomly, it doesn't take much in Bitwig. It's basically made for this. With 5.2, we have a new way of recording and generating sequences in the Grid. The Shift Register is made for this task and helps you record and playback sequences in different ways!

Fantastic, I've been looking forward to getting stuck into the Note Grid to make my own custom arpeggiator patterns, and melody generation was going to be next on my list of things to try, and this is a great intro guide, thanks!

This is awesome. I was wondering how to add randomized rests to the sequence?

What methods can you use to make it more rhythmically interesting? In Softube Modular, I like to use Vermona Random Rhythm as a clock source, but I don't know how to do something similar in Bitwig.

Wild development. Was this on the fly? Impressive, both your creativity and the grid's capabilities.

One day 5.2 will be released ... seems like forever. I'm not putting Betas on my main system any more. I need to fix my #2 system so that I can play with these Beta toys.

Terrific. I still use the sequence gen method you showed a while back using the s&h random module for most of my sequencing needs, but it’s great to have options.

I love these tutorials, but also would like to hear the problem statement and practical application up front that these devices solve for. When I watch them I'm always thinking "okay what will this eventually be used for in music making?" But maybe I should also read the description too... 😬

the problem is, there is no problem in music making anymore. everything is solved for years, kinda. Whats left is exploring options, fun, toying around. These video i do, are more like inspiration and ideas how to approach things.

@@PolarityMusic I think we're saying the same things but misunderstanding each other. When I see a device like the melody generator, I think the video would be more effective to viewers if you said at the beginning of the video "One time I wanted a device to generate simple melodies for me in key, so here's how I built one..." I think a new viewer would think it's more interesting because they already know what your goal is. Otherwise new viewers might have a hard time following along with the journey you're taking them on since they don't know where you're leading them, and end up skipping to the end to see what the finished device is first, and then backtracking to see how and why you built it.

i think this is good for recording to separate channel. I created this very unique sequence which i really liked but then poly grid kind of defaulted its state when opening / saving project - you need to record melody AGAIN to actually get the sound working (hard to explain but basically just try to generate something save and close and open the project you will know what i mean)

yes, the data in the shift register is not saved with the patch/project.

making me want to break out my Future Retro Zillion, which is a small MIDI sequencer based around a shift register. I have serial number 2, the first they sold to the public which is kinda neat :D

I can´t even check out your videos anymore because I dont know what its about and if I click on it and then leave again because there is no info and I leave after 1 min you get bad "watch trough rate" and lower ranking. Therefore I rather not click on it to not spoil your stats.

Same. There's good info in some of these videos that I find valuable, but the lack of topical titles causes me to regularly skip to a few spots for a few seconds, then exit. This is not what a content creator wants their viewers to do. It's objectively bad for the retention algorithm, and I'm not TRYING to have a negative impact on the channel. I'd like to support it overall, but this is not a good strategy. It's like all the garbage I could do with unrelated hashtags, etc. to gather low quality followers on social media. It may boost vanity metrics, so it may seem like it's helping in the short term if you're hawking the analytics, but it actually decreases engagement for the core demographic and decreases brand value overall.

I think jump of rate is more important than engagement of commets etc.

I think the description is pretty clear, no? Anyway as conscientious of you as that is, I would say it's Polarity's problem if he chooses obscure titles and there's a knock-on effect on stats, he seems to be having fun with them so I wouldn't worry too much :-)
