A big problem with movies like this isn't the lighting, or the music, or even the acting sometimes. It's literally the fact that the monster/demon or whatever, has no set rules, can do whatever it wants, and you've already seen it. The best way to show a monster is to have it have very strong capabilities, with s defined weakness. It shouldn't be revealed atall if possible, to keep the fear factor in because the less you know, the more afraid you'll be. If it has NO WEAKNESS, then show it or say so. If this demon is weak to the light, but there's lights everywhere, and the demon can just turn on the lights, but it's still not going away with the lights on, then it just makes the movie bullshit. There's no stakes, there's no reason to care, no one is ever really safe so whatever. It just falls apart at the very foundation.

Isn't having no weakness one of the three rules of making a monster?
@diegogomes2282 жыл бұрын
@@isabellajemica Not exactly, one of the rules to make a good monster is to establish that it has a weakness, because if you never establish one, you can't naturally justify the heroes being able to defeat the monster. I think you're mistaking this for the idea that you have to make the monster hard to kill. An good example is Freddy Krueger, in the second half of the first movie, we find out that Freddy can do whatever he wants only when he's inside your dreams, we also find out that Nancy can bring things (at least related to Freddy) from her dreams to the real world. So we got a weakness (Freddie's limitations) and a way to exploit it (Nancy's ability), but then, despite the objective being clear, how will Nancy be able to accomplish it? Yes she probably can bring him to the real world, but how's she gonna do this without being killed before?

@russiandragon452 жыл бұрын
@@diegogomes228 that is so true, and even when finding a weakness within a monster or big bad that's SUPPOSED to be terrifying, all-powerful, and all-knowing can make it less so. But you have to understand it's what makes good concept when you find one that is very obscure but matches well with the theme of the monster. Just like Freddy has to do with dreams in the whole point of his terror is that he hunts you down when you're at your weakest in your dreams but only so. If this monster had to do with photos and light was the only thing that was going to make it go away, like an undeveloped photo being sensitive to light would be bad for it, then they should have rolled with it and it would have been so much nicer if they just didn't forget that weakness randomly. It also is good story writing to make it so that way the monster and its weakness isn't revealed until towards the end, so that way whatever is killing these kids is much more terrifying because of the mystery behind it rather than the demon itself. Whenever you have a monster and it's revealed, just that revelation alone makes it lose so much of its horror factor. The fact that it has a weakness even more so. You want to reveal all that at the very end so that way when the heroes finally find a way to win it's at the end of the story where it should be. Because if I found out that the monster was resistant to light, bitch I would be standing in a bright ass room all day everyday and that'd be it until I figured out that I could just take a picture of the demon like a big brain.
@diegogomes2282 жыл бұрын
@@russiandragon45 I think the concept behind being weak to light is good, but it could be better executed if characters really didn't care to turn on lights throughout the movie, only to find out that light can damage him when the officer was shooting it, and instead of being hurt by bullets, it was by the flash of light created by the gunshots. But then the characters would have the same problem as those in the movie Lights Out: how to you stay in light ALL THE TIME? Since now, being in the slightest dark possible is a death sentence. Then it's also the matter that they don't really know how to exploit this weakness, so despite the monster being less terrifying, he's still really dangerous

@@OrionDawn15 *TL;DR* I agree, we shouldn't put people down for what they don't know. But ironically, that's what Elvis is doing to the writers, on something he himself doesn't understand. I'm not denouncing ignorance. I'm denouncing hypocritical ignorance. It's totally fine to not have any experience or specialized knowledge about polaroids; there's no shame in that. It's only an issue when someone is _going on record_ that they know more about the subject than the writers, when in reality, they don't know what they're talking about. It's true; you don't know what you don't know. Which is why I'm not being mean about it. My first comment stated a fact, my second comment opened with "I love Elvis," and it didn't intend to disparage him in any way, but rather just to hold him to his mistake and inform others. I agree that we're all human, and no one is born with all the knowledge in the Universe, so we shouldn't debase people for their ignorance. Which is kind of my point. There are a lot of videos in which Elvis openly mocks movies because he thinks the writers are "stupid," when he himself is the one who is misinformed. Don't get me wrong, he has a right to his opinion, and I feel there is nothing wrong with criticizing movies. If I didn't enjoy watching Elvis dig into bad movies, well, I wouldn't be subscribed. But when you're going to criticize plot writing on a topic you don't actually have any personal experience with, e.g. polaroid photography, I feel like you take on the responsibility of either doing the most basic, surface-level research on the topic, or you just have to accept that you are, in turn, opening yourself up to the same criticism. When I see a claim being made on the internet that I believe to be inaccurate, I always look it up first to see if _I_ am the one who's wrong before making any attempt to correct someone else. Having a healthy understanding of how much there is out there that you still don't know is a much more important trait than knowing a lot of things, IMO. I think the only thing that's really "stupid," is assuming that you already know everything, and that if someone thinks differently from you, then that means they _must_ be wrong. In other words, the belief that you have a "monopoly of genius" is much more dangerous than simply being ignorant. That's why the first vertex on the graph visualizing the Dunning-Kruger Effect is called "Mount Stupid." (a very interesting google search if you haven't already heard of this) Even though I personally own a polaroid camera, and have struggled tearing a polaroid photo in the past, I STILL looked it up and double checked just to make sure I wasn't misremembering. I know it all seems trivial, but it's very important to me that I don't mislead or misinform people on the internet.

You know what made the Goosebumps story so creepy? The fact that the photos revealed what was going to happen to the person, no matter how outlandish it looked. Here, we just have creepy shadow man and at times he's so hard to see it doesn't make any difference. Update: The only thing, ONLY THING, I'm going to give this movie credit for was showing that the kids who were killed in the past WEREN'T 'bullies' but actually trying to help the girl from her abusive parents which is the only 'twist' that came off as a decent as before that, it really did feel like this whole thing was just another 'misfit kid has bullies, bullies do something, monster takes out bullies but victim dies anyway and is monster, ect'. If anything, this shouldn't have been a monster movie but like some sort of mystery where the kids in the present learn the truth and try to set the story right. hint for disposing of haunted objects- don’t just toss them whole into a body of water. smash them into little pieces, burn/melt what can be burned or melted, put the pieces/ashes into at least 10 little hex bags to properly bind whatever lingering malevolence may be leftover. place the bags inside heavy lock boxes, then go on a road trip stopping at various national parks, dig a very, very deep hole in the most remote place you can still navigate your way out of and place a box inside at each stop. bury the boxes placing big heavy rocks, or (local of course) saplings to grow over the area so the box couldn’t be easily dug up. if you are okay with keeping it near you so you always know where it is bury somewhere on your property(or a local field if don’t have land) and again, ideally mark the spots with trees. weld the boxes shut. this seem expensive and like a bit of a hassle? well its a demon object. you gotta be thorough.

I'm only 28 seconds into the video and this movie sounds like a rip from Goosebumps. I wonder if I'm right? 2 minutes and 11 seconds, Elvis literally references Goosebumps... Need I say more?

I had to pause at the 6:28 mark to say this, she works at an antique shop, she just walks out for seemingly no reason and just abandons the store and her job. It’s like the hanging up the phone trope but with jobs, gotta move the plot along who cares that someone is relying on her to manage the antique store

5:01 I actually really like when characters have some aspect to them that isn’t related to the plot/story being told. It just feels more realistic to be like “I wear this scarf because I’m self conscious and that’s that” than “I wear this scarf because the DEMON gave it to me when I was a baby and I’m cursed” or whatever

Besides Goosebumps, this movie also rips off the Stephen King short story: The Sun Dog. Just read that instead.

Also for the dog part, im pretty sure dogs and cats and any animal really can see things that we dont see. And can sense things we cant. He probably sensed a evil force in the camera and was whining as a early warning sign.

Great editing!! On the walking off by yourself in horror movies to abandoned areas I once went to my local hospital in Hobart Tasmania to hang with my friend as he had broke his wrist drunk , we had been sitting around for hours so I said " I am going for a walk around" I got in the lift and pressed any random floor just to see what was up there and I the elevator opens to the perfect horror movie set , it was a abandoned ward that was pitch black apart from the lights coming in from the street, there where old stained mattress lying on the floor , old Medical machines broken and gowns just left behind, I pulled out my lighter and started walking around this creepy hospital ward . I assumed it was just closed down for renovation so I wasn't really scared UNTIL I see at the end of the ward a black figure standing there still obviously looking at me ! I turned around and bolted back to the elevator and went back to ground floor emergency where my friend was. He went in to get his wrist sorted and while I was still out in emergency waiting two security guards came up to me and asked " why we're you on ward 16 ? , I said " sorry , I just got bored and went for a walk " , what he said next freaked me out , " so , where is the other guy ? " I looked at him blankly and assured him I was by myself, he then said " on the Cameras we saw you go into the ward , and then after a minute or two you came back into the elevator, where's the guy why was right behind you at the elevator doors when it was closing? Whoever that black figure was had chased straight after me as I saw him and bolted, no idea who it was and why they had been there , I told the security that and they went off to investigate. My friend had finished getting his wrist fixed and we left , so I never found out who ( or what) it was in that scary abandoned ward that night ........but yes , it was straight out of one of these shitty horror movies.
