People want new SX-70s to be on the market, but let's be real, almost no one would buy them because they'd be massively expensive. Polaroid rightfully is selling products that people can and will actually buy, not a niche, multiple hundred dollar camera barely anyone would buy and would be a loss for them.

Okay so at first I have to admit, I was really sceptic about it not even in a way that I would hate idea of such camera but more so of the reception of other polaroid users; i saw a lot of hate and anger poured on this thing even before it's release... I suppose it's because people expected a new spectra camera or film rework or something but not this... But now after seeing it in a review and thinking about it, I actually love the idea of it and can imagine owning one and using it to take pictures that I would put later in my journal, especially considering that classic polaroid pictures are really big and take too much space on paper and this looks like a perfect format for that. Thanks for the great review, forever in love with your channel thanks for keeping up great quality content about this niche yet super fun and beautiful art form that it instant photography 🥺✨❤️

It depends on what you want in a camera! For me I have the Now+ because of my previous experience with Digital cameras I know how the shutter speed and aperture work and it's what I wanted and worth it to me. If you're not looking for full manual then try some of the Instax cameras as the film is ALOT cheaper and easier to come by!
@aarontimm
@aarontimm Жыл бұрын
I've only really gotten into polaroids maybe over the last 3 months, and I think the most insane part to me is that on most 600 cameras the battery isn't in the camera, but rather the film packs. That must drive their prices up a bit, and possibly does given that i type is about $5 cheaper, at least on amazon
@alexgshirreff

I think my favourite thing about this camera is the portability, when I carry my SX-70 around I feel like I'm holding a baby and my 660 is just too bulky to shove in a pocket and forget about. This camera totally feels like a return to Edwin Lands vision of a true instant film camera, with film at a competitive price too. My only concern is that you can snag an Instax mini 11 for like half the price of the Polaroid Go and I think when it comes down to it a lot of people will pick the Fuji over the Polaroid.
@InAnInstant

Nah, sticking with my SQ6. I get 10 shots for about the same price and more features. Plus the hardware is cheap enough now to be competitive. This is just a money grab by Polaroid. Like why in the hell could they not make it a 10 shot pack? 8 shots is fine for the older cameras but for this? Nah.

I'm hoping this can really buoy Polaroid's business the way that Instax keeps Fuji's overall film business afloat. My only gripe is that given they could clean sheet design the Go film pack, why not make it 10 shots to give Instax one less leg up? Like I get that production makes it impossible right now to get 10 shots in the legacy SX-70/600 size, but they had no constraints on this. Just seems weird to knowingly put yourself at a price and capacity disadvantage to the company you're competing against. I mean maybe they had a camera size in mind and that was as many shots as they could get in, but seems too convenient. But I genuinely hope Go is a big hit, which will make Fuji make better Mini camera, which will make the whole tiny instant photography scene better for consumers. Good stuff.
@InAnInstant
@InAnInstant 3 жыл бұрын
I think it's simply a matter of branding at this point? Or rather, brand consistency. I hear what you're saying, they definitely could have fit 10 sheets in a pack, but they're just rolling with 8 as the Polaroid standard at this point.

If this works, it will be a big deal and make Fuji actually wake up and try for once. If it fails though, it could really sour things. It would lose money, but also anger the die-hard fans who stuck with terrible inconsistent film for so long. I think having 8 shots is fine, because if they didn't it would be able to hit that sweet $19.99 price tag and also be awkward as the only film in polaroid that wasn't an 8 pack. good idea to release it right before summer too! perfect little vacation pack. $120, you get a cute little doinker and 2 packs of film to start. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. If this product fails, I think it is not just bad for polaroid, but probably bad in general for instant film.

I kinda feel like this is a gateway camera for Zoomers. You know, kids who've never seen a Polaroid before, and whose entire lifetime experience with cameras is using the one in their phone. So of course it comes with all the features you'd reasonably want like a selfie timer and dual exposure. I also can't help but notice the photos are the perfect size to put in the back of a transparent phone case or something. And I'm ALL for it. This thing is gonna introduce so many people to the wonderful world of instant photography.

I think its going to flop, but at least it will bring in new people potentially. Still, instax mini has this beat on price. If anything it makes me want to get a instax mini camera since the film is almost half the price. Kind of a slap in the face to cancel spectra, and then make mini film after killing the big film when they could have just designed a new spectra camera to fit their chubby spectra film. Kind of a risky move, but it will pay off big if it works. If they can overtake instax mini, its over. But I feel this is still a bold move considering they still haven't nailed the film chemistry. If this works, it works big. If it fails, it will leave a bad impression and just drive the casuals further into the arms of instax. Polaroid really need to throw more at film chemistry R&D, and in the mean time, throw a bone to the hardcore types more often. Thankfully they restocked the circle film, so that is good news, more duochrome and other unique things would be vital. IMO, this all feels way too ambitious. But if it works, maybe we can turn that cash flow into better film quality going forward.
@InAnInstant
@InAnInstant 3 жыл бұрын
I think the thing to consider most about Spectra is that they know, with certainty, that it lost them money. When they were producing it at a lower failure rate, it still held their production lines back and sold significantly less than 600 film. At a certain point a business has to just move on from burdens like this, especially a company of this smaller scale that is attempting to stay afloat financially. The Go film, while a risk for production and a hedging of their bets, at it least has market precedent. Polaroid can clearly see the success of Fuji’s smallest offerings and know there is potential to succeed there. Spectra didn’t have that potential, it carried no weight in the market. Personally, my primary concern and need is 640 ASA standard film and, to an almost equal degree, SX-70 film. Polaroid produces the tools I make art with, and those are the essentials. Other things (like duochrome, round frames, etc) are just cherries on top when they come through.

@@InAnInstant wow thanks for the response! It will be sad when your channel blows up big and I won't be able to talk to you as you will have a zillion responses. Trust me you will get to 100k subs...in an instant! I agree %100 with everything you said actually. I have a hard time articulating myself sometimes. I don't know if you have an insider at polaroid, but their parting message about spectra never mentioned anything about spectra film being a problem as much as solidly saying older cameras were an issue, and nothing about cost certainly. So I guess I just thought if cameras were the issue, why not make a new spectra camera that does work? Then we could even have cheaper i-type spectra too! I'd have loved that actually! Though if they were making the film at a loss, that is understandable, but why not just be honest about it and tell us straight up how it is? I still have faith that in the distant future spectra will make a come back so I'm not actually all that miffed about it. Just confused. I recognize that they are working with a single factory worth of production hardware across the atlantic ocean. I just see that at the end of the day, the biggest stumbling block is the film chemistry more than anything. I'd be willing to shed all creativity, product development, brand deals, special frames, accessories and all, if they were able to just really work hard to get that chemistry issue solved. Because without the foundation, spectra film too had the same issues that all the other film had. The lighting bolts, weird color splotches, etc. While I'm cool with it, and know WHY that is the case as an enthusiast, willing to spend money for an objectively inferior product at a higher price than what instax has on offer, I know that polaroid is worth saving and using until they get it right. HOWEVER, as you say they are a business first. And I agree, Go film was a very very savvy idea, the camera is seriously compact and stylish, and the film shape looks great. But we both know that this is an attempt to steal the uncontested itsy bitsy baby format held by instax(their reign over these lands has been absolute). And we also know that the mini format is used and appeals to a mass consumer market that generally has almost no understanding of photography at all, so unless it is easy to use, and just works, they won't bother. Instax mini does just work and is consistent(even if the colors aren't as nostalgic looking as polaroid). I fear the issue is that this is a good idea at the wrong time. That they are building a house on a poor foundation, putting the cart before the horse and other colorful idioms that express this idea. I'd have jumped right on board if I knew polaroid 640 ASA/ISO(You should make a video on that confusing topic maybe) was reliable. Because as it stands, I plan 4 shots per pack of film, knowing that I might have to redo a shot for me doing the lighting bad, but also because I might get a doinker of a frame spit out. Again, I personally am okay with this. But this film is NOT ready for the average Joe, who will just say "eh, this thing is crap" shelve it or toss it in the bin. What makes me fearful is that this apathy mixed with a bad result may turn them off trying instax as well, and assuming that instant film is ALL bad(not fair, but that is how people work in their busy lives who aren't passionate about something). Once you turn someone off, even if you fix everything, its often too late. But hey, maybe I'm wrong. I tend to hope for the best and expect the worst. Thus why I really am crossing my fingers. I want this to product to rock our socks and then give them so much money that they can afford to not only fix the film chemistry but sell us special edition Go film with real gold leaf frames(ooh lala ~) as a thank you celebration. I am hopeful. I want to end this on a note of hope rather than pessimism. So here it is. I toast to the success of Go film, because it can easily be a success in the market, and make fuji realize they can't just rest on their mini film monopoly and actually innovate. Ironically, I think it could force them to then focus on their wide format monopoly. LOL! And that would be a great great ironic twist for the history books. Anyhow, I've spoken enough. Lets get back to spending our life savings on instant film!

exactly, I fear they may overstay their welcome with those of us who have played with their film through these growing pains. It feels like they are trying to put on their big boy pants a little TOO early, especially by just axing spectra without (ironically) exploring the concept of making a better camera for it. Imagine an i-type spectra camera and film! However if this product works and they really hunker down, I think it would leverage enough income to really start giving them the ability to improve film for the die-hards and give us more unique films, and potentially even give us a glass lense pro tier camera to replace the onestep+ imagine that! Looking forward to the future, instant is making a comeback with or without polaroid, so hopefully they take advantage of that and make better and better stuff, not just the same old stuff or new toys entirely(though I do enjoy new fun film and cameras).

Nice, this is the first new polaroid i really considering buying... But why do they still have just 8 photos inside a catridge.... They designed it from the bottom to the top... and were not capable of doing this... But aside its a really cool camera!
@InAnInstant
@InAnInstant 3 жыл бұрын
Great point, overall I think it's just a branding thing. They want the entire suite of products to be the same. I-Type cameras are all original designs and could have easily been made to have 10 shot packs, but that would have added an extra headache for 600 camera cross-compatibility. In this case, they definitely could have made it 10, but 8 is just the brand now.

@@InAnInstant yeah I see, I dont quiet get why the 600 and sx70 film also have just 8 photos inside.... yeah i know, new chemistry and probably bigger battery, but I see it more for bigger profit than it would fail on the technical solution... I just want to give the counters from 9- 10 a sense! ^^

My take is this: They probably retooled the spectra machines to make this film, which I could see people being mad about. However, this will probably make more money for them this year than spectra ever did, and this will probably be adaptable and will be a cheaper alternative to 600 film. (I'm gonna try and make an adapter for spectra cameras, so I guess I'll see how that turns out.) Overall, I think this is a good move for Polaroid. and I'm not sure why people are mad about it existing.
@InAnInstant

Waiting to see your Spectra adapter! Would love to try that out.

You can't see why people are mad? They killed big film that the OG nostalgia die-hards loved, in order to appeal to the masses who know nothing about photography let alone instant film. I think its pretty obvious don't you? That being said, I'm actually probably just going to sell my remaining spectra film, and wait for the next time(a long wait I'm sure) we get duochrome. But hey, if we see some easy to use adaptor for spectra cameras, it could allow for some more fun, as I love the spectra camera I have and it only cost me $35 and was in great shape. I'm sure there is some creativity to be had.
@akin4536
@akin4536 3 жыл бұрын
@@differentlyabledmuslimjewi4475 Don't worry, I'm annoyed about Spectra dying too. The cameras were great, and I preferred the large film size. However, at the end of the day Polaroid is a buisness, and spectra lost them a lot of money. Having them stay around is more important to me than spectra. And since the Go will most likely be adaptable to spectra cameras, I think that helps cover the wound a lot.
@differentlyabledmuslimjewi4475
@differentlyabledmuslimjewi4475 3 жыл бұрын
@@akin4536 I'd like to see where they said they lost money on spectra. They never mentioned it on their goodbye to spectra announcement. I'm actually personally not really all that bothered. I was just dipping my toes in the water of the idea of wide format and thought it would be fun to try. I did enjoy it but definitely didn't have fun because I had all the issues of spectra ejection. Still, I used a pack recently and it turned out way better than expected. Just one last rouse before selling the rest of the film to someone more passionate for spectra. I was fine shelving spectra personally until a later date when they had a hardware solution. Though I still like the spectra camera I have, so PLEASE work on making that adapter. I'd love to play with it and hopefully it actually ejects okay lol.
