I'm so lucky that my partner, kids, and friends all know and accept that bipolar is my life. They are very supportive, even when I don't deserve to be treated with compassion. As hard as it is, I have found it better to be open than hide it away. People will either accept you for who you are or they will not. But you have made the effort to start.

I love that you said "support circle" and not "support system." Words are so important. My sister used to refer to me and our other sisters as her "support system" and it really sounded dehumanizing, like we were cogs and wheels and not people. Like some kind of device she owned instead of being people with our own needs and problems. "Support circle" makes the whole thing sound more reciprocal. Thanks Rob!

I am from Greece, I am in my 20's and recently I have been diagnosed with bipolar type 1 after having severe episodes of mania (I thought that I was a revolutionary:)). Thank you so much for all of your videos, you have been very inspiring figure for me, like a wise friend from afar. I have experienced denial by my father, he could not believe it, he insisted that it was nornal for my age till he saw me bicycling in the rain without shoes for about 7 miles. Then he was convinced. That's my experience, again thanks a lot!

Hey brother thanks for the videos. After I was diagnosed at about 55 I was in denial for about a year until I did a lot of research on KZbin. At one point I thought I was possessed by demons before acceptance. My initial application for SSDI I did not give many information about the bipolar. Ashamed. Once I send them to info I was approved pretty quickly. Lost my career because of it. But everything's better now. Father was schizophrenic so it makes sense. Keep up the great work.

Hey there fellow Polar Warrior! I appreciate you taking the time to share some of your experience with the community. I’m really glad to hear that you were finally approved for SSDI. I think it would be a good idea for me to eventually make a video talking about that process, because it has helped so many of us get back on our feet. Take extra good care of yourself and I hope you will continue to stop by the channel. There’s a link in the video description if you’d like to connect or join my private community. - Rob

Thank you Robert for addressing this issue. I was first Dx’d with anxiety/Depression by my family Dr after a major panic attack only to find out I had type II Bipolar by a Psychiatrist much later and knew in my heart something else was going on for awhile like periods of anger, anxiety, depression, and a few hypomanic episodes!

My family has a history of denial to go with our history of mental illness. But the generation that came of age in the 60s started the tradition of NOT denying. So there's that; but there are some who still treat bipolar disorder as some dark secret we have to keep, or something "private" that no one should know about. We're a cancer family too but cancer is not as "private" as bipolar or ADHD or anxiety issues. The stigma persists. Changing the subject here, going to religion, I feel turning to God for support has helped me cope with my bipolar symptoms. Both to help me from within, and to help. me turn to others for help.

my daughter for 3 years repeats the same steps for a manic episode, 1 deep depression, 2 apathetic but starting to interact again 3 starts irritability 4 buys and smokes marijuana every day about 3 times 5 starts euphoria and grandiose ideas, mania 6 She collapses and goes back to step 1 and every year, starting in January and March, she is manic, in September she is depressed, and so on... I'm so tired of her denying that she has the disorder and not accepting medication, there is no more friends, he doesn't even have a job and he's extremely intelligent... thanks for the videos

I am married to Christina she has a mental illnes, and she does not regonize the illnes, she say she ok without the mediacation. When i married her she did not tell that was dignos as bipolar. She went on spending sprees told me not to talk to her parents anout the stuff she bought. I have been married to her for three years. Loving one day the next day she said she wanted a divorce. Meet someone else. I talk to her mom and dad found this had happen 5 times before and they had record of it from 2016-19. But it stared before that she has a dease bipolar. She would not go on her own. Had to get her the help she needed. Filled out the paper work they pick her up and the judge using all her pass history mandated her to a year treatment. She mad at me and will not talk to me at all and i do not have the right to her medical records, but her mom and dad do. They said that when she gets to the point of treatment that she'll reach out us. I have watch some of your videos and all the information is good. She is in denial of the dease.i am the thrid husband, the others just use her. I am tring to deal with all the issues including her job and getting the teatment she needs. I just want her to reconize that this dease not curable andshe needs to deal with it. Her parents are done they inbthete 80s. I love and care about her and i want to protect her from her self. I have ask her to see concelling and pystrics. No way. I can get guardian ship an conservatorship started the paper work. I need doctors medical records been going threw that with dad and mom have power of attorney over her. I will try and get her to watch your vidoes. Her denial makes it hard and her son has lived threw this all his life both parents have the diesaes. My speeling is not so good. I am adhd myself lots of energy, manci but i like myself on down issues. I watch your video on both. Just did not see her dease. Untill i witnees my self and read all the reports that her mom and dad keep. I just 🎉want to help her get back on the right track. And be happy

Sometimes, when I'm in an agitated hypomania, I firmly believe my husband doesn't believe my diagnosis, but when I take the time to calm down, I often realise that it's me that is telling myself that without any proof. We are sometimes very harsh on our spouses and that is unfair to them. We should try our best not to engage in unnecessary fights.

Pay attention to: is your doctor a Pharmacogenic testing" clinician? Treating the bipolar first, very important. Freacking meds reduce our lifespan too. especially the LAMICTAl (lamotrigine) is a disaster on me, at 100mg, every morning, it makes me vomit, most of th etime. Always eat something (have breakfast) first, never take on empty stomach; lamictal is making our necks stiff, causes vomit, and confusion. This med alone shortens my lifespan. Not to talk about the rest; it is sickening. The Lithium has caused one ogf my BP friend's head to swell up beyond measure; that is how she died. Causes heart disease. We should focus more on the deleterious effects of meds we are given by unscrupulously motivated "Pharmacogenic testing" psychiatrists we have.
