Why is Ross so articulate when trying to solve other people's problems and is a total buffoon when he talks to Demelza????

I am almost inclined to think that he really does not have much respect
@violetacalayan84103 жыл бұрын
Sorry. Big finger got in the way. I meant to say “much respect for Demelza”. The thought of her as kitchen maid creeps up in his mind still. Whenever he gets into a brawl because someone insulted Demelza, so he says as his excuse, I think it is more because it is an insult to his person for marrying a kitchen maid. Imho.

@@violetacalayan8410 It always bothered me that Ross felt he had to deck anyone who referred to Demelza as a scullery maid, especially when he told George when he married her that he was indifferent to gentry standards. It appears he is not the rebel he pretends to be. Demelza has more integrity and class than any of those gentry folk....more than Ross even. Who is raising who???

@@violetacalayan8410 That’s utter rubbish, remember the bit on the coast when they are grieving for their first born daughter and he says to her that she makes him feel ashamed of himself as she sees the good in people, as she wants him to make up with his weak cousin and yes Francis is a weak man and blinkered, more so than Ross. Ross maybe from an upper class family, but unlike his nemesis, George he cares about people, particularly those of poorer social standing. It was pretty obvious that before Demelza even became his scullery maid that he fancied her.

A great series, hope they make series 6, but keep it to Cornwall and the battles with the Warleggans and of course the mines and ordinary folk , Jeds and his mrs characters and accent were hilarious and contributed a lot to the enjoyment of the series.More more, more

Exactly what made it 10x better than Downton. Main characters were so flawed, Ross was an absolute a** the whole season, but they changed and grew.

I remember on this point in the series, I thought; I never want to miss an episode. After the end now of S5, I hope there will be continuing stories adapted from the next Winston Graham's books. There is so much adventure in, that I like to see on screen. 📚 🎬 🎥

I was so ready for Demelza to leave him at any moment. He says he couldn't help himself and then gives her some grand speech that was suppose to make up for it but basically said "the sex with her was bad so I came back".

She created a scene when Ross cheated. However, she came home, went to bed and got a hug from Ross when she cheated. She was even in love, secretly entertaining letters and went to the bedside of the man she has infidelity with when her husband was having his best moment of the series winning the MP delegate. I'm sorry I like the characters but we see this too often with women in real society they get a pass for everything. For a woman of her own conviction that she always claim to lay burden on Ross with she went into the same thing and even worse.
@omagosh51372 жыл бұрын
Ross said his visit to Elizabeth was a result of 10 years of devotion. Demelza put up with his infatuation with Elizabeth not only for one night but for 10 years. She deserved that hug. He neglected Demelza and took her for granted. It wouldn't have happened with Hugh if Ross has treated her with the love and respect she deserved. He should have gotten down on his knees and begged her forgiveness.
@tinat94862 жыл бұрын
Disagree. She kept secrets from Ross he never found out about yet she remained self-righteous about Elizabeth.
@HelTra91 Жыл бұрын
@@tinat9486 and how many did he keep from her? After Francis died he prioritized Elizabeth because she so high and mighty to be able to do anything on her own. He left Demelza on her own so many times because she was capable but just because she is capable doesn't mean she wants to be abandoned time and time again.

I watched the series and have now read the books a few times. I think the main theme is adultery and the long term effects, also how to forgive and heal. Even though I enjoyed the series it was painful to watch first and most importantly Ross and his refusing to get over Elizabeth (and covet her). The night he took advantage of her and then the child Valentine as a result to be ever present. Who also as a grown man has adulterous affairs. Dwight and Keren and the result of Mark fleeing country. Dwight’s guilt. Ross’ father being a philanderer and effect on Ross. Demelza affair with Hugh. Monk Adderly..another philander. No woman safe from him. And Ossie! Ugh. In the books old Tholley was nasty. Cornwall was a little Peyton Place…Still a great love story. Really prefer when series follows books, when it deviates it’s disappointing especially the reconciliation. Demelza slowly forgiving Ross. His inability to explain his feelings. Missed hearing those words I’m sorry and the great line..my fine, my loyal, my dear, my very sweet Demelza. Would have loved to have heard Aidan Turner say that line.

@@peggyabryallen2025 The adultery ruined it for me also. It may be realistic in 50% of marriages, but it's a fantasy story in a novel. Even though Ross was a terrible man and Demelza should have left him, I so wanted her to be the pure example of unconditional love. I almost did not go back to it after her affair with Hugh, but I had to see how it ended. I am still traumatized by it. I think Eleanor Tomlinson hypnotized me. I have never been so struck by an actress.
