This is why I prefer pole-arms with only one hooking side and one pushing side, and not on the same side. You can twist the shaft to disengage from a hook, or to let a weapon trying to deflect your point slide off the pushing catch. If you have hooks and catches on both sides, twisting the shaft doesn't help you. There are so many pole-arm designs... but they aren't all created equal, some are superior for practical use.

Whats interesting is at the peak of later polearm formations halberds axeheads became much smaller the blades became very angular almost hook like and the spike became twice as long and overall lenght got longer and manuals described their use in formation more like pikes with more thrusting and very little striking they more often used to hook an enemy out of rank and stab him from multiple directions.

"A simple-headed polearm." Good metaphor for smooth-brain in an argument. I identify as that. Another advantage of being a simple-headed polearm is that I when I want to disengage I have a lot less to untangle. Smooth-brain for the win.

A key point here is: The hooked polearm user _should_ have more experience managing their entanglements: They've been practicing with their weapon, they should know the pitfalls and the options. An even-more-practiced opponent should be able to turn this against them, by having tried out all the various plays and counter-plays and knowing the options their opponent is giving them.

@marbellaotaiza801 Yeah, in a gladiatorial fight the reduced penetration is far less of an issue since A: most gladiators didn't have nearly as much body armor as an actual soldier would wear, and B: having several shallow wounds would likely cause more bleeding while being less lethal, which would be desirable in gladiatorial combat as most fights weren't to the death.

basically no. spear beats both of them, unless you consider very long axes like halberds to be an offshoot of axes and not an offshoot of spears, and unless you're using a greatsword of some kind but that's just one type of sword. axe vs sword would depend on the level of armor and the type of sword and axe, though some historical masters were of the belief that a short two-handed axe would win against a one-handed saber. the idea of taking an axe against a saber was somewhat popular in Poland and other parts of east europe, but it didn't really catch on, suggesting that it may have been more of an on-paper advantage in the end.
