5:45 I think the auto-highbeam is not just turned when its dark, it is also how fast you drive...at least in our P2, even in pitch dark, under 50 km/h the high beam is not turned on...

This video is an impressive display of what we should hope is the future of headlamps. I’m surprised at how quickly the black out box (oncoming cars) responds to their passing. Another person commented that truckers see Volvo lights perform the best to oncoming traffic. You can definitely see that in this video. Thanks, Bjorn, for showing us future tech that is current in Volvo and Polestar cars.

From my experience with my own car: In regards to blinding truckers, the main problem seems to be that we often see the cab before we see the trucks headlights. Therefore they often get blinded, and I have to be awake, and manually dim them when approaching trucks, especially over hills, and through turns where their headlights are blocked by a railing or such. In regards to the behaviour on E6 it seems the car is unsure where the actual car is located, so it's not able to block it out using the pixels, therefore it dims the entire high beam. I wish it was able to more confidently detect cars on the highway, but I guess the conservative approach of dimming them completely is better than blinding every driver due to erroneous detection. As you mentioned it may also be based on GPS. Possibly also speed.

Granted, the power of the beams seems to be really really good, but I got the impression that the lights are set too low. The high beam even seems to reflect on the ground which is dazzling my eyes^^ Or is it just my impression? I think if you adjust the headlights just 2-3 degrees higher, they would be perfect.

For MQB and probably MEB, pulling to flash will deactivate the Auto system ONLY if you pull when the high beam is active/blue. Otherwise it flashes normally and the grey Auto icon remains there, but of course you would need to let go of the stock, for the Auto system to activate the high beam, so it might still take a few seconds there.. still not ideal, but at least you have some control. I tested this on my car, so I guess it depends on the implementation of each manufacturer

Checked out this video to see if the Pixel LED headlights on our Polestar2 was the reason a vehicle we were following recently pulled off to let us pass because we were blinding him. It seems from your excellent video that the light sensing is easily sensitive enough to detect taillights from cars you are following even quite some distance away so I guess we were innocent in our recent experience. So far the Pixel LED headlights have worked extremely well in our experience. My suggestion about the temperamental performance later in the video was that the amount of reflective signs and marker posts confused the car's intelligence, or there was an excessive speed factor in play. I'll rewatch the video again later to see how my theory pans out.
@r87961
@r87961 6 ай бұрын
I’m curious how your theory has panned out. I used to drive the same route 2-3 a week for 2 years. During this time I observed this exact behavior most of the time on the return trip. Always the return trip. I’ve also thought about reflections and speed, but would have this even in section of forest at 100 km/h, where the only visible things are: 1 car up to a kilometer away, one speed limit sign, and the small 100 meter increment signs. Meanwhile, earlier that night in the other direction it would totally unexpectedly work at 130 km/h with dozens of cars in front and in opposing lane. Utterly confusing. I’ve even tried different on ramps up to 20 km away with mixed results. Usually nope.

Thanks to the chip shortage mine will only have the normal LED headlight, when it arrives. Almost a tiny bit tempting to buy a used P2 if they didn't cost at least 20-40k more than ordering a new one. Edit; adding insult to injury, I will have to push a button to open the rear hatch too, like some peasant :) (not really a problem, the newest car I've owned before this is my current 2012 Civic)

It is possible the gradient influences the activation of the high beam and adaptive functions. Going uphill will probably turn off the high beam. Going downhill will probably activate the adaptive function. Perhaps we should query this with Volvo. The low beam at motorway speeds is simply not sufficient.

Tesla is probably not doing it because of patents, not because they can’t figure it out. To use a patent Tesla would have to pay for it, and Tesla seem more focused on cutting costs and features. Same as the 360 camera feature they lack.

Could just be the camera but in this and other videos there seems to be 2 voids between the low beam cut off and high beam LEDs when on? That darker area is quite noticeable. As others have said low beam needs to come up a couple of degrees to give better short range road cover distance, and then high beam covers the longer range required. You have no height above the road when level on high beam setting, and also impacts longer distance in this video.
@nakfan

Lights comes up late after city lights due to the fact that system considers that there could be another city light at a a certain time interval and instead of coming and going continuesly it has a treshold. For the high speed action, it looks like the movement of the so called "box" can not be faster than the car itself. Accordingly it might trigger only regular auto high beam mode above certain speed.
@r87961
@r87961 6 ай бұрын
Unfortunately nope. To keep it brief. Observation of 2 years same trip 2-3 times a week. Lights work in one direction at 130 km/h with dozens of cars. Won’t work in opposing direction at 100 km/h with 1 car. Using different on ramp up to 20 km away won’t matter much. Can reset behavior by slowing to 70 km/h. Only for it to fail again in 10-120 seconds. It makes 0 sense.

Man that low beam is way to short. High beam seems ok, but personally I highly prefer a wide spread over such a defined, narrow pattern that moves so much all over the place. It just makes stuff so busy and produces a lot of artefacts, so it seems pretty tiring to my eyes at least...also, you see nothing outside that square, which is very dangerous. Concerning Polestar or Volvo - the automakers are purchasing those system from Hella and the likes anyways, there is very little that goes into those light modules that actually comes from the car manufacturers, except some fine tuning within the limits of the built in customization abilities of those systems. So yes, there is a high chance that this is the same system, only tuned slightly differently.
@Vamanos46
@Vamanos46 2 жыл бұрын
Volvo has a habit of aggressive setting to low beams too low out of factory, but for each and every Volvo that I have owned with adaptive headlights, the low beams can be easily fine tuned with a tool manually. :) So BESIDES just the swivelling part of the low beam, the stationary part of the low beam becomes a perfect spread of everything that one can WANT.
@sacharanc

Just an area to improve on my point view, when following an other car, the blinded area is very low so you have a big area without light between the car and the light. The light must go at least to the tires of the car, no?

@@bjornnyland many (not all) various steering based features of Volvo's driving aids like pilot assist with steering aided cruise control works like basic radar based adaptive without steering help beyond 86 mph. BTW, you REALLY should have caught that the low beam was unreasonably low and should have corrected this manually (easy fix with the hood open and a tiny ratchet, it's vertical alignment adjustment is right there at the top of the headlight without getting your hands dirty), before you do headlight tests in the future.

For future reviews, I assume the new Ford e-transit will be tested, please make sure to also test it loaded with 1000kg, these kind of vehicles will be used by carpenters, they have approx 600kg of heavy interior and tools + 3-400kg of cargo to perform the work. Ford claims 350km range… With 67kWh… I believe this is miss leading and I believe the van will in best case have only 180km when loaded and driving 110-120km/h on highway. I’m still in the camp that we need this kind of vans with 100kWh battery for them yo be useful as a work utility, needs 250km loaded, highway driving and at winter -5C… then the workers can use the van the whole day and still get home after work, the van must for 70% of all working days be able to just change in the night and have enough capacity for a full days of work and driving
