It seems a little unclear to me, but from how I understand it, the people who owned the car that got broken into at the train station didn't consent. I could be wrong though, the video didn't elaborate on that point.

Taru The point is that the source of the sample is easy to ID. Planting a cheek swab sample is impossible because the cells in the sample wouldn't be cells normally found at a crime scene.

I really don't like the idea of the original, voluntary sample sitting in a drawer somewhere. I'm not really comfortable with any of this, but if I was forced to provide a sample, I would strongly prefer that it be processed and stored electronically. With the original sample in a drawer with the provider's name on it, abuse is much easier. All an ill-intentioned person has to do is put on a pair of gloves, take one of the two Qtips, apply a very small amount of water, rub the Qtip on some piece of evidence, and then put the Qtips back. That's it and some innocent person could spend the rest of their life in jail for a crime they did not commit.
@BlueHairChad
@BlueHairChad 7 жыл бұрын
The very least they should be doing is assigning a number to that sample for ID and then restrict access to the correlating names to a secure system. Ideally, these samples should be collected, analyzed, and then the physical sample should be destroyed. This should be done by an impartial, trustworthy, and heavily audited third-party. This should only be done when people are convicted of felonies or with TRULY informed consent. They guy in that video had no idea what they were doing with that Qtip or what would happen to it afterward, and I'm pretty sure that is the case for most if not nearly all of those samples.

Anyone else notice how the police sold that "consensual" DNA sample? "Just part of our intake process, okay." "Consensual sample of DNA, okay." "All we ask you to do is print your name here, sign your name, and today's date." They made it seem like it was just routine paperwork, threw in the word consensual, and downplayed the gravity when communicating to sign the consent. Seems more like shady car salesmen tactics than public defender. I'm not sure that dude knew what consensual meant, mush less what he was signing up for.
