Police Call Parents After They Bust Them Partying

On August 12, 2023, Florida Fish and Wildlife Officers were conducting water patrol along the IntraCoastal Waterway when they spotted a vessel traveling south with the operator clad in a wet suit. They decided to initiate a vessel stop both to check for resources and conduct a boating safety inspection.
Upon making contact with the operator, later identified as [REDACTED], the officers inquired about their catch for the day. [REDACTED] proudly displayed a lobster they had caught and revealed another lobster and a fish stored in a cooler near the helm. When questioned about any additional resources in the cooler, [REDACTED] mentioned a fish from the previous day. However, upon opening the cooler, along with the fish and additional lobster, the officers also noticed two empty alcohol beverage cans.
Further investigation revealed that the cooler did not belong to [REDACTED]. A search of the stern hatches led to the discovery of 25 empty alcohol cans and bottles in the starboard stern hatch. Concerned about the operator's sobriety, the officers requested [REDACTED] to board their vessel for a breath sample test to determine if they were operating the vessel under the influence.
[REDACTED] claimed not to have consumed any alcohol. However, subsequent breath tests using a Portable Breath Test (PBT) device yielded readings of .024 and .022 respectively, indicating a blood alcohol content above the legal limit.

Again, the point is we trust 18 year olds to protect our nation, have the sense to choose whether or not they would like to give the ultimate sacrifice and die for it, but not enough trust to let them consume a certain type of beverage. It didn’t used to be this way, most of the country you could drink at 18. We keep upping the age restrictions on things, treating progressively older people like they’re still children, and then wonder why grown adults still act like children.

Only in America. Australians are adults, including adult enough to vote, drink, gamble etc, at 18. Period. Alcohol for boat licenses limit is .05, same as for fully licensed drivers (Probationary Drivers License limit is zero - no alcohol in blood. So basically, in this country, they would have been not guilty of any offence. There have been attempts to raise the drinking age, but they fell flat for exactly that reason, you can fight in a war and risk death at 18, so you get to have a beer after the battle.

Another time back in the 1980's, my buddies and I had a 120 quart cooler stuffed with beer and we were down by the American River. Stupid us, we decided to have a bonfire in a metal barrel. Next thing we know the Sheriff's helicopter shows up and orders us to leave the area. We left after stashing the cooler in the bushes. We didn't realize that they had IR and so the helicopter lands on the river bed and the cop snatches our cooler and flew away. Years later after my brother joined the Sheriff Dept. that story lives on in cop folk lore. Those cops had a party with all of our beer! :)

When my son got caught drinking at age 14 I got a call from an officer and I hurried over to pick my son up and the officer knew my son was in for a lot of trouble when I had him . My son is now a professional and he thanks me for having strict boundaries when he was a teen.

With a PBT reading of .022 this most likely would be reduced to nothing in court. This is well within the margin of error since the limit for under 21 year olds is .02. They aren't going to do a blood draw on such a low blood alcohol level. These young adults were rather respectful and just doing what young adults do. 022 is definitely not drunk.

Anyone under 21 can't drink at all. So it's still an underage drinking infraction. 0.02 is the limit for BUI for anyone under 21, that's why he mentions that 0.02 limit. Underage drinking infraction doesn't need any reading, just having open alcohol in the same boat is enough evidence, which is why he said he could charge them all, with underage drinking, but he was being lenient.
