Police called to councillors explosive shouting match over building on greenbelt

Police were called to a council meeting which had to be adjourned after a councillor was called a “Nazi” during a green belt row.
The Oldham Council meeting descended into chaos as impassioned councillors from different sides argued about the town’s participation in Greater Manchester's controversial joint housing and business development plan.
In a heated debate, those in attendance accused the council of “gaslighting” the chamber in an act they said amounted to a “breach of constitution” by not opting out of the Places for Everyone (PfE) scheme.

That said, there's green belt and then there's 'green belt' - the latter should be built on, because it's not actually providing the benefits of nature, it's just got a legal status of some sort, the former should be protected for the benefit of generations to come.

As an Australian from the Outback, I love the English countryside. It would be an historic tragedy to turn Britain into one, continuous urban agglomeration. British cities are just going to have to grow up, not out. They're going to have to get denser. That's the cold, hard reality of letting in millions of migrants. With sensible planning and vision, urban growth can be done well. But probably won't be. PS: Just like Australia. Sydney & Melbourne are now unliveable metropolis's.

1.5 million houses - how much of our countryside, food production land and habitat to be concreted over by major corporations (how much do they give to Labour in donations?) with their poorly built, ticky tacky houses? What grade agricultural land will be built on? How much will Labour's huge building programme add to our carbon emissions, how much harder will all this building make it to achieve your (farcical) Zero carbon pledge, how much more food will we have to import, what water attenuation issues will it cause, how many more land fills and reservoirs will we need, how much pressure on local infrastructure, how much more light pollution etc. etc.?

What sort of democracy is it when elected representyatives cannot complete their contribution. If the meeting has to last longer when there are important issues so be it. Of course, at local council and in Westminster we do not have democracy. The rules suppress discussion and confidential "Cabionet" meetings make the decisions. Over all, officers instruct the elected representatives according to their orders from the local government association (an unaccountable quango) and other bodies such as Common Purpose. Democracy has gone in the UK. Let other nations know and protect themselves accordingly.
