Hello there! I talked to my cousin today. His family used to live on your farm. I asked about some of your finds in the attic. His father used to give injections to whoever needed them. That is why there was so many medicine bottles. The gunpowder was for making bullets and they also used it to make a well. The same one you were cleaning. My cousin used to help his dad and uncles fill the bullets. He wants to visit one day and answer any questions you have about all the things you found. Have a great evening!😊

More like folks from a deweaponed society. A bit of old ammo is no big deal. The old powder is a bit more worrying, but the LAST thing I'd do is put it in a car and drive around with it. And, the hon is almost certainly a powder horn.

my husband says the bowl at 6:17 and the several metal thingies that are vaguely sickle-shaped were used to extract sap from trees. and my grandfather had a horn just like the one you found filled with gunpowder from when he used to hunt in his youth. about Portugal it's good to keep in mind that many men from the previous generations were deployed to the wars in Africa, in the countries that were Portuguese colonies then. many sad mementos from that era survive. I urge you to keep in mind that many people from the previous generations also kept dangerous pesticides and many of those are still dangerous. back in the day my Portuguese in-laws had a lovely orchard with beautiful plums, and my husband told me they would spray them with anything (back-alley or acquaintance sourced) that someone told them would keep bugs away.

That would make sense if they're for sap as we found lots of the terracotta pots for collecting the resin on the land. We're being careful with all the poisonous things. Yes, the colonies could play a big part in the history. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

What fun this was! Reminded me of cleaning out my Dad's garage, when I found what I thought were corroded sticks of dynamite. I had the same reaction you did - stunned frozen with fear - and called the police twice. Turns out they were flares. The police enjoyed coming out and hung around to see what I was finding! My dad was quite a collector so I have lots of his old bottles and an old powder horn also. But watching you, I can actually smell and feel the dust! You guys really should be wearing masks when sorting through old powders and poisons. Fun stuff! Thanks for sharing.

I live in Portugal and I'm also a hunter, so I have a firearms license and some knowledge of Portuguese firearms laws. Don't worry about the court. You're not charged of anything, at most you are only a witness. I think GNR in your village doesn't have much work to do, so they sent the case to the local court. Maybe you should contact the public prosecutor office at the court and submit your video as evidence just to prove you found the gunpowder and ammo in the attic. Good luck with the house!

Thanks, Eduardo. The GNR said something about witnesses and court and a judge. As you say, it’s probably just procedure and we have the video to show how we found it. They did tell us that they had been called to a house with a live grenade packed into a wall! Taking a bit of time to get all the licences together to get the renovations started but it will happen eventually. 😊

That horn you found is a powder horn for an old musket/muzzle loader firearm. I used to explore old abandoned houses in my youth back in the late 70s when I was around 17 years old. Some of the things that were left behind were fascinating. I never took anything from the houses but I would read some old news papers and letters.

Oh wow....that brough back a whole lot of memories to me. Some of those things you found, I recognized as bits and pieces of old things my grandfather had in his old sheds, and we kids would go on the hunt for anything old like that when we were at his farm. We lived on the other side of the road which divided Grandpa's farm in two but their house was set back off the road about 500 metres from ours. I remember some of those things there that my Dad would also use....and then later in years, my ex and I would buy a house, renovate it and then sell it, move onto the next one and do the same. I loved renovating and I can see the humungous job you guys have ahead of you. But good on you for having a go.

The tapered wooden dowel is for spinning yarn... You put raw cotton or wool on the dowel and then draw the material off the end while spinning the dowel. It is the small manual version of a spinning wheel.

I just saw the beauty product Leite de Colônia , I live in Brazil and we still have that product here. It is very old, at least 70 years old. My mother used it all her life. She used it on a cotton ball and rubbed on her face as a cleansing. It takes off all make up. My father also used it on his neck and bald head for a deep cleaning (get out all pollution of a big city). You can also use it as a deodorant. A very old, simple, cheap and good product. I never knew they had it in Portugal.

The glass tubes with the bulbous ends are called hygrometers. They are used for testing in making wine and beer.

Farmers used blasting powder to remove rocks, to help remove tree roots and many people used to make their own bullets, so none of that surprises me, it’s very old farm and so finding stuff like that is far more normal than city people think.

That long piece of wood might be a spindle (fuso) for a spinning wheel (roca de fiar). One of those would be a great find 😉

Maybe the wooden "clogg" and the metal bits with "lacing" holes were for making shoes. I love watching people make shoes by hand and I think I've seen bits like that before. They can also help to stretch moist leather into shape...

The reason the shells had holes where they were located is that an octopus ate them. The octopus use their beaks to drill through the shells in that spot because it makes them open up.

The belt looks lovely on you, but, It is a girth that goes under the horses belly and attaches to each side of the saddle. But if the "shoe" fits wear it. LOL hehe, and the curled metal bits where used to hammer into sugar maple trees to gather the sap, a bucket would of course hang under it. Now a days a lot of folks attach hoses to drain in tanks. This was fun watching you both figure out the treasures from the old attic.

The chandelier drops are really gorgeous but too big to have come from the house. so I do wonder where they originally came from. I still like the idea of a magic wand. The aerial was a funny colour and not that robust, but a good idea all the same. Sometimes you have to be brutal and get rid of stuff or you end up with stuff that you never get around to using.

My uncle had a farm he was in his 80s and was cleaning out a basement and found two crates of Dynamite It was just after 9/11 he called the authorities and asked if they could discreetly come and get it? They came and took one look and They evacuated a 10-mile = 16 Kilometer radius around his farm, Of course, his name was in the papers too because it involved kids in a nearby school being evaluated & new housing developments. They waited two days after being notified and had been stored there for 50 years... I guess the guy that sold the farm to my uncle in the 1930s used it for stumps & rock removal.

at 6:36 into the video, those odd pieces of metal are parts of horse shoes. The square holes in them are for the nails that go into the hoof, and the flat parts cover injured parts of the horse's hoof that need to be covered until it heals, whether it's on the wall of the hoof, or the sole and frog of the hoof on the bottom. Likely they would've been custom made by the farrier for each horse, or commissioned from a blacksmith by the farrier.

It was easy to see that the old gunpowder was stable, and you were in no danger. Had that been old dynamite, it would have contained glycerine which gets to be extremely unstable with age. There are many old abandoned gold/silver/copper/etc. mines here in the USA in our western States, some of which are more than 100 years old. Many mine explorers have met an untimely demise after either finding it, not knowing it's danger, and touching it, or not seeing it and stepped on it. I think she was right about the old hinges. They would get mortared into a stone wall, and the door would get screwed or bolted onto the flat part of the hinge. The cross-hatches on the narrow piece would allow mortar to seep into the grooves while the mortar was wet. Once dried, the hinge would be firmly locked in place. I think those long glass bulbs are actually for watering plants. Fill them with water, and push the pointed edge of the tube into the ground, and the ground will slowly absorb the water over a few days. I was wondering all that stacked stone was in the attic, until I noticed that the entire building was made from stacked stone. That must be a rather old house. If you are still waiting to find out if you need to go before a judge in court, I would strongly suggest that you speak with an attorney, and show him/her every bit of video you have from unpacking that attic. Given the condition of everything, it was easy to see that it had been there for a very long time, in fact, well before you even bought the property.

@@NearbyVeggies i must pass the question if it comes to portugal, but in canada the 7.62x39 round fmj is sold and allowed on all ranges, but forbidden to hunt with (full metal jacket) .the kalashnikov is only one weapon to use this caliber, there are lots of non fully auto guns on the market, that are legal to own. however, you used the proper way to discard them, much better than throwing life ammo into the garbage. love your content

My dad hid his gold coins in his house's attic. He hired workers to put some insulation in the attic and they stole all of his gold coins. He didn't realize they had taken them until many months later. The coins, the men and that company were long gone by then. The police were no help. It would have been a he said/they said situation with the hired men anyway.

What you have in your hand at minute 6:36 is a 'hoof' iron for cows, because back then poor farmers couldn't afford a farm horse. Since cows are even-toed ungulates, this shoe was only created for one of the two toes. The other flat shoe is the pre-made horseshoe before it is pawed on by the farrier.

The sea shells you found naturally have holes at the tops of them. I have collected these same types of shells for ages and ages. they all have little openings..I am happy your explosives are out of your hands now. I am sure the authorities won't bother you about them, perhaps the former owners have some answers to give lol. You have a task ahead of you. I would have guessed the Horn with the metal ring as a black-powder horn for carrying in the field. That would go along with the black powder you found, It's a pity you didn't examine the news paper some it was wrapped in for a date so you could estimate when it was stored. It looked to me like someone was loading their own bullets.

The horn was used for wine, you could carry it on your body, just like a ladies' cross body, it also had some kind of rope attached to it. if you take out the cork/newspaper at the end you could fill it with the wine and drink it. I am glad you did not find any of my dead relatives, but I got all pumped up in that direction, I just love a good "mystery". All of this commotion over such "old" gun powder and old bullets, here where I live in Canada/Surrey, I worry about bullets, but they are flying around, you never know what you going to encounter when you step out the door.

Well that was fun. It reminds me when my husband , I and the kids move to Italy and took over the cleanup of his mothers home that had been built in 1849. And had not been lived in in over 20 years. Like you we found many items no one could tell what it was. No experiences with guns or bullets though.

Very common to have blasting powder on old homesteads. In fact it was necessary for so many uses. Nothing to be afraid of as long as it is handled correctly.

We have an old, old shotgun in the family. Never fired since 1900, maybe earlier. My brother being curious dropped a firecracker that explodes when thrown against pavement down into the barrel followed by the ramrod being strongly thrown down the barrel onto the firecracker. BOOM! The ram road embedded into the oak ceiling. Moral: old gunpowder can still explode with considerable force.

8:15 Thats a nearly 200 year old powder horn, for loading a muzzleloader musket or hunting rifle. It does have some collectable antique value. Do not chuck it out! You have such nice finds there.

I'm guessing you figured out it was a powder horn for a musket. And the gunpowder and empty shotgun shells were for reloading. Also, the green tin had primers for the shotgun shells. Some very cool stuff in there.

I think the horn is for holding gun powder. There was one in the old house where I grew up in Kentucky.

I'm pretty sure the metal pieces that are curved and have holes in them are used in making shoes, a pattern. A very nice set of pieces for a collector

T he little round tin contained -I think- percussion caps ,to fit over the nipple of a percussion firearm to fire the charge ( this system superceded the flintlock)...the "belt " you found was a girth- the strap that goes from one side of a saddle -underneath the horse to the other side'..a pretty vital piece of saddlery ,without which you would fall off!!.. Soldiers in cavalry regiments wear them in their regimental colours still today..they are known as "stable belts " and the idea was that it could be used as a spare girth if the normal one broke..they are easy to spot as they are wide and have two straps and buckles....I wore one as a bandsman in trhe Royal Gloucestershire Hussars...We also wore spurs -like the ones you found which screwed into the heel of our George Boots...Istill have mine!!...though we never rode horsres...! they sounded great when we were marching as the rowells - the star or in our case-round revolving bit on the tip - jangled....hope this is of interest ...( NH Churchdown .Glos. The belt looks like a girth for an English saddle! Or a saddle similar to one. I think the wooden fields are spindles for a spinning wheel. In the USA old folks used gun power to blast rocks and stumps out of fields .

blasting powder is just black powder…the small metal bits in the green tumbler were primers. Someone used to reload old black powder shotgun shells for their old scattergun. Honestly as long as it’s not in a confining container it would just burn up really fast/hot. Bit of a fire hazard but wouldn’t have blown you up. That thick belt looks like it might be a strop for a razor.

Minute 29 on the dot, that's the inside of a manual machine that was used back in the day to do mash potatoes. Put the cooked potatoes inside and manually spin the handle around.

The odd shape steel pieces are shoes for oxen and the horn is a gun powder flask, the pestle is the container and the mortar is the tool to grind what ever is in the pestle oddly enough a mortar and pestles are still used today from grinding various chemicals and substances and as well for kitchen use, antiques as for the rest of the items you've found really old stuff and perhaps a visit to a antique dealer ( reputable one ) . Gun powder won't go off without a spark but age may have lessened that potential. It's safe to handle safely OK! Cheers👍👍👍😎💨🏴‍☠☮☮☕☕
