In about 1980 I was a cashier in a store that had an old cash register for the time. It had a marble shelf on it and I was taught that if you drop a quarter on it, it was very easy to identify older silver coins from m more recent ones. The cash register was, no doubt made before they stopped making quarters out of silver, but I was very easily able to identify several silver coins by their very distinctive ping in this way.

You can tell a copper penny from a zinc penny by just bouncing them on a hard table or counter top. Copper pennies ring quite noticeably, while zinc pennies sound dead. I know this isn't all that useful, but it demonstrates the principle.

I inherited a gold bar from my father when he passed last year. He bought it 30-40 years ago. When I brought it to a local metals dealer he could tell it was fake by sight even before touching it. He said he didn't know what it was but it certainly wasn't gold. Rather than pay to have it tested, I measured it with calipers and calculated it's volume then weighed it on a two place scale and calculated it's specific gravity. Looking at a table of specific gravities online it turns out to be a brass alloy that is way off the weight of real gold.

Recently I purchased a sigma metalytics analyzer and went through every coin and found out that 5 to 7% of them were fakes. More people are scammed by publicly traded gold/silver companies too. If you don't have it in your possession, it didn't effect the global supply. Many professional and creditable sources are estimating that with the current rate of usage, there is only a 40 year supply in the world for silver. They are trying to solve this by encouraging people to buy ETFs, derivatives, mining companies, and royalty companies instead of physical.

The one thing I know about that you didn't address was the real gold, but plugged with tungsten. This was/is prevalent in China and I do know that the weight is so very close to gold that it won't set off alarms on anything but the best of the best detectors. I never saw much about definitive testing of these bars, but it put me off buying any gold a few years ago and with the revelation of a new fake gold process in China, I probably won't buy any gold that isn't an old coin or from the US, AU or Canadian mint directly.

When I started stacking a few years ago, I didn't know about all the counterfeits or way to detect them... besides dropping a silver coin to "ring test" it. After watching a few videos about counterfeits, I got a little paranoid about my purchases. I learned everything I could about counterfeiting, and more importantly, how to test my silver and gold. Counterfeits can usually fool one or even several tests but not all of them. If the weight is right, the size will usually be wrong, there are alloys that mimic the density of silver or gold but can't ring true, XRF machines only measure the surface of the metal, Sigma's metal verifier can even be fooled by some coins. The Sigma PRO machines with the overarm sensor do the much better job by measuring through the sample coin. They're not cheap until compared against the discovery of a bunch of fake silver... or a single gold coin.

I now use a Thermal Fisher X-Ray gun we have one at work so I'm lucky get to use that and I test coins and bars for people local to me when they ask me to. I would say though for most people a Sigma is usually all you need just always start with your basic tests first and don't rely on the Sigma alone.

Regarding 12:05 testing for the specific gravity of gold. Convincing fake gold coins and bars are made from tungsten core covered with a surface layer of gold. Sophisticated counterfeiters choose tungsten to simulate gold, because the specific gravity of gold is virtually the same as the specific gravity of tungsten which is 19.3. That is why further testing is required whenever gold plated tungsten coins or bars are suspected.

Gold plated tungsten core coins and bars are available from the internet. Some test specimens were purchased, measured for their mass & volume and determined to have a density of 19.3 grams per cubic centimeter which is the density of Tungsten as well as Gold. If they had been filled with Lead, then their density would have been 11.3 grams per cubic centimeter. Further evidence was revealed after removing the outer layer of gold plating, a tungsten core was exposed which was very hard metal having a Mohs Hardness of 7.5. On the other hand, if it was a Lead core, Lead is a very soft metal having a Mohs Hardness of 1.5.

Actually gold is diamagnetic. And tungsten is paramagnetic. That's actually very important to distinguish the fake from real. A good way to test the gold coins is to hang the coin in a capsule at a long thread (maybe 1m or so). A strong Neodym magnet will repel the coin if its real gold. But in fact the forces are little and the magnet has to be a strong Neodym magnet. It's a cheap, easy and reliable test.

Hoard gold and silver or toilet paper? 4 years ago you had a hard time finding TP at Costco or Sams or any place. People hoarded the stuff so as soon as some came in it was hoarded by your neighbors. I don't remember folks hoarding gold and silver coins/bars - that should tell you a lot about what folks will do when SHTF. Personally, I have a stockpile of freeze-dried food from Mountain House - it has a shelf life of 30 to 50 years. People need food over gold and silver when bad things happen. The problem of counterfeit gold and silver has killed that market - there is no black market for freeze-dried foods. Barter is the important thing to consider - cryptocurrencies, gold, and silver, are all illusions when the lights go out...

costco method of shipping is interesting. they had the product in a usps mailer bubble envelop style then had that in a usps shipping priority box. obviously the margins are low working at volume. the bubble mailer is meant for security of packaging during shipping which includes keeping the product from shifting around the box and cushioning from impact. the usps box was huge 20x of what the product really was. overall it seemed weird, however the box did not show signs of breakage however these box are normally come with a self removable tape to close the usps box, one side extra sealed via clear tape however i tried to lift the flap to see if there was signs of breakage. I noticed no breakage and had some relief. overall like the video said, better to be careful than to lose out on ignorance

Reagents aren't useless - you *do* need to know what you're doing and testing will need to be slightly destructive as most of these fakes are plated. Ideally you'll want to use an XRF, but that's not accessible for many people. Also remember that aqua regia and nitric acid (for Ag) must be "fresh" - again, reagents are useful. A milligram scale can be used to obtain the weight of the item, and then you can put the item in a graduated cup to see how much water it displaces to calculate if this matches the density. This can be faked eg with various alloys (tungsten comes to mind). You can also buy or build a percussive tester. This could be as simple as a piece of tubing that you drop a ball bearing down and see the bounce height. None of these methods are foolproof. Yes - Ag does have a very specific sound to it, it also has a feel. This doesn't mean there are not alloys which could replicate this property. It's always good to have reference pieces of known good material as comparators.

The best test to tell if gold is real or not was invented like 3,000 years ago by Archimedes. Gold can be weighed and then placed in water to measure it's volumetric displacement. Gold is one of the heaviest metals in the world by volume. The only non-precious, non-radioactive metal with a similar weight is Tungsten. The most passable fake would be a real gold bar with a significant tungsten slug crammed in the middle and plated over. But this would not be worth the effort on any bar of less than 5 ounces in size.

Specific gravity is exactly what I was talking about. You can test this with a caliper and a $100 scale along with some math. You don't need that high dollar tester as it is doing the same thing. The upside of caliper and scale is that you can bring it with you and can test a sample prior to purchasing it. I would absolutely not purchase any gold or silver from someone who isn't willing to meet you in person.

Most people think highly of Costco’s integrity, and would likely prefer buying gold from them vs a random vendor. So… it’s actually a great opportunity for a crook (working in the warehouse for Costco) to swap out their genuine gold for fakes. 😂

Walmart has 3rd party sales on their site, selling fake coins. Both in Canada & the USA. Saw several vids on KZbin about it. If the price is Too Good to be True - ITS FAKE! I purchased my own sigma metalytics analyzer. It is well worth the money - to KNOW, that I have the real thing & not a fake. Fakes are everywhere - so be sure to purchase from a trusted source. There are plenty of well known websites, that sell the real thing for a fare price.

What a great video, very informative, thanks! Question, how strong of a magnet do you need to feel the silver “grab” will any ordinary kitchen magnet do, or do you need a stronger rare earth magnet to definitively identify it?
@ChibiCuna
@ChibiCuna 15 күн бұрын
6:40 While it is true, that silver is diamagnetic, the following test with a magnet has nothing to do with it. Sliding a magnet above a good conductor will induce a current. This will generate an electroMAGNETIC field which is oposite of the magnet's field. It will work with any metal. You can try using a copper tube or aluminium-foil at home. Just put your magnet in that tube and be amazed that it takes longer to fall through that tube than without it.. (It would work on iron as well, but this metal is ferromagnetic and will attract your magnet much harder than those dia- or paramagnetic metalls). By the way. That last machine is working on the same principle.

@1:09 he says that (U.S.) coins ARE legal currency, but follows by saying gold and silver coins REALLY AREN'T COINS AT ALL! (Excuse me!) He then states that coins are TYPICALLY called bullion. Yes, silver and gold coins are also considered bullion, however the DIFFERENCE is that unlike COINS, anyone can produce rounds or bars, whereas COINS are minted by actual, individual NATIONS and are DATED! They are also minted in specific amounts by year.

A quality scale and a caliper along with a little knowledge on metal densities will tell you if you have the real deal or have been scammed. I wrote a comment under the pinned that gives all the densities you will need or you can look them up quite easily. Same goes for the formulas for finding the volume of your sample. Science is a good thing and understanding it is important. I know of some destructive tests that will work as well although I doubt anyone would be happy if you dissolved their gold to see if it was real, plus it is difficult to get one of the acids.

You're statement you made about silver being the only metal with this property is in-correct. Copper and Brass have the same quality. The amount of force is slightly different, however. copper I believe will have a stronger force applied to the magnet. Unfortunately, the Fake silver and gold bars are made from these metals causing this test to be in-affective.
