Let me preface my comments by saying I remember when this movie came out. The first time I saw it, the theater crowd was average in size. By the fifth time or so (yeah - no VCRs or anything back then) it was a packed house! For some reason, YT started giving me lots of recommends for “The Car”... and that lead me to rewatch it after all these years. Yes, it's in my *DVD* collection. I really don't know how it got there; maybe, like the car itself, it just showed up. Anyway, I read some reviews online and the authors said the movie is silly, that the special effects are cheap. What are they smoking? Let's start with “silly.” Guess these reviewers never watched any of the glut of zombie movies that infest the cinematic realm like bedbugs... “Resident Evil?” What about “A Quiet Place?” Or “Brightburn?” Is “The Car” any “sillier” than those? I think not. And I bet everyone reading this can offer more moves that are “sillier” than “The Car.” Special effects/Visuals: It was 1977! That being said, they hold up very well. The roll-over the two police cars is epic. As is flying through the living room window. Even the ending was definitely passable. Even though I read comments by someone who worked on the film saying they wished the ending fireball had been more spectacular. The biggest plus? NO CGI! Everything looks real. It has a grittiness to it that is absent in the sterile world of CGI effects. Now for my personal rating, which means nothing to anyone else: Sets/Visuals “A” Rating! Going on location to Utah and remote areas of So Cal instead of using the old standbys of Vasquez Rocks, Devil's Punch Bowl and studio back lots makes “The Car” shine! The car itself is a masterpiece of design. Music “A” Rating. Enough said. Action “A-” It has a few low spots but not many. Acting Have to think about this one a bit. Either a B+ or an A-. There are some spots where the dialog is a little off, but Ronny Cox, Brolin and that old curmudgeon RG Armstrong make it shine'!! "Farting music!” Never forget that one! Overall rating has to be no less than an A-, maybe better. For some reason, this movie has always been one of my favorites. And it made a 💩💩💩💩💩load of money!
