No matter one’s opinion of cyclists or their riding habits, they are practically defenseless against the smallest sedan, never mind a truck. Drivers simply have to take the high road - not only around cyclists who abide by the rules of the road, but even around selfish cyclists who don’t. Shaving a few minutes along the way can’t possibly outweigh the risk of maiming or killing a fellow human being.

TiconderogaX Who did I ignore? Stay off the FOOTpath/sideWALK then name should be enough. Try to understand how traffic works, and try to understand the rules in your head are not the rules/laws, I think it is best for everyone to stick to the actual rules/laws rather than for everyone to think their own version is better, and expect others to mind read each different version as they meet them on the road! Grow up, the World doesn't revolve around you!

TiconderogaX So you can't actually point to any, well done! I do not live in New Zealand anymore, but the point is you are commenting on a video from NZ, where NZ laws count, not the laws you make up in your head! I am now living in the UK another country that drives on the left with the same laws (which country did you think this video was from?). No vehicles where impeded in any of my videos, impeding traffic is bad, and I have never done it. A few petty minded dicks think following a car at 10 mph slower than they would be going (not impeded) is not as bad as a few seconds waiting to pass a cyclist safely (not impeded). impeding traffic is to cause a meaningful delay, not some feeling in your childlike mind. Yes, grow up, you clearly need to if you think commuting by bike is a sign of not being grown up, even though I have never commuted by bike, and you claim to also ride a bike, you think riding a bike is a sign of not being grown up? Can you explain that to me please?

TiconderogaX The law is that cyclists can (and are advised to) move further out into lanes that are too narrow to share safely, your feelings are that cyclist can't/shouldn't. You also think a cyclist claiming the lane is blocking traffic, even when they are extremely easy to pass. Also, as you can't even find anything better to do on Christmas Day than troll on KZbin it appears you are a very sad lonely troll, not that anyone was surprised!

I dont see anything wrong with what the biker did here, he had the common sense not to undertake the truck when traffic started moving off which is good practice. As for road position there are grids and the camber of the gutter to avoid. The orange car is fully to blame here

qwertinezz The limit is just that, the "limit" and this is a two lane road, with each lane too narrow to share so the drivers need to use the other lane to pass safely anyway. There is nothing wrong with filtering, it is normal, legal practice.

+qwertinezz He is entitled to move up the inside of the traffic. Cyclists can pass on either side. He was taking up the amount of space required to feel safe riding (primary position) meaning the driver would need to wait for a safe opportunity to pass him. Which this driver didn't. Everyone is required to ride/drive below the speed limit or they would be breaking the law.

It appears to me that the push bike rider was using more of the lane than they needed, resulting in the near miss with the car... Your law states that the vehicle driver must leave 1.5 metres clearance between the push bike and themselves - hence the push bike rider should have to do the same....

That is the case for civilized countries, this is New Zealand, the Police didn't even turn up to the crash were an oncoming driver turned across my path, knocking me off and putting me in hospital. They still hadn't done anything three days later when I was discharged, they didn't even charge the driver for failing to report knocking me off and injuring me as required by NZ law. There is no way (unless you have a lot of money) of pursuing the drivers for damages in NZ (I was informed of this by Citizens Advise). There is also no requirement for private vehicle insurance in New Zealand so not only can the drivers declare themselves bankrupt if they are actually pursued, but as bad driving can't mean drivers are forced to pay higher premiums, there is very little to deter bad driving. Well, you could say the Police, and points on licences, but the Police are only interested in speeding drivers, and banned drivers just continue to drive.

Riding too close to the curb is dangerous on a narrow road. It encourages drivers to pass when it is not safe (within 3') and can cause them to either hit the cyclist or hit another car while trying to make the pass. Cyclists that take road safety classes are encouraged to "take the lane" on narrow lanes to prevent that. They are told to be visible (bright colors, lights, etc) and be predictable (no swerving, consistent speeds, etc) and to allow motorists to pass when it is safe. Even to use hand signals to say when it is safe or pull to the side and slow down to "release" any cars that get stuck behind. If you cannot pass with at least 3' of space or would not have enough room to jump into the other lane (another car too close ahead or traffic approaching from the other side) do not pass. Cyclists if you have cars behind you and an area to pass opens up, "release" the cars. Get over when it is safe and they have room, signal them by, slow down. And merge and take the lane again when done. The funny thing is that sidewalks seem safer. But apparently research is showing they aren't. It makes it more likely that a cyclist can hit a pedestrian (especially those with earbuds in and not listening or being aware of the surroundings... I always preferred to only put 1 earbud in so I can hear or better yet just go for a speaker), crash while avoiding an obstacle because the sidewalk is too narrow (avoiding a pedestrian, avoiding a tree, hole, glass, etc) and it makes it harder and less predictable for motorists at crosswalks and driveways. A cyclist on a sidewalk may be obscured by bushes, trees, fences, etc until it is too late to avoid a collision. A driver may be turning at an intersection and not expect someone to cross as fast as a cyclist. Slowing at crosswalks when the cyclist has the right of way can also make it hard for cars that do see them coming. Say I'm going through a light and the guy next to me wants to turn and is waiting for me. I slow down to check the other direction and now if he looked away I'm in his lane longer than he expect. I'm less predictable which means it can cause an accident. Also from the perspective of a cyclist breaking is hard. We should do it anyway when needed. But a cyclist that stops has to clip out of their pedal, downshift, and stop. Then they have to clip back in and accelerate (and acceleration is not just simply holding down a gas pedal. Getting back up to a decent speed can be hard), and shift up gears. That does not justify a cyclist behaving unsafely but just something to keep in mind. I'm betting that is why some people filter like in the video. They can coast up to a light, hope it turns, let traffic pass and start up again without having to start from a dead stop and clip back in to the pedals. I'm not a fan of filtering like this rider did at the stoplight but other than that he did everything people on bikes are supposed to do. The driver was frustrated by the slower bike on the road and since society has done a bad job of creating dedicated bike lanes in areas and/or educating both cyclists and drivers how to co-exist on the same lanes, situations like these happen a lot. Cyclists that take the lane are doing the safe thing. But they also need to obey traffic lights, stop signs, and other road laws. Cars need to pass when it is safe. At least 3' is the recommendation that I often see. And don't anyone talk about the cyclist not belonging on the road. Tax on fuel is not the only source of funding for roadways. Property tax, sales tax (you know for the bike and all of their gear and equipment), and any other state and local taxes help fund things like roadways. Personally I'd be fine with cyclists needing some sort of licensing and training class when riding on roadways. Hell I'd love to have a chance to learn from experienced people and practice in groups. As it is I stick to canal trails and subdivisions but I'm not a commuter. But learning how to properly travel on the roads would be nice. I would not joy ride during rush hour. But most likely this video was shot during someone's commute home and probably not a joy ride at a busy time of day. Also before I picked up cycling as a hobby I had the same frustrations as all other drivers. "Get off the road! Move over if you're going to be slow! You're going to cause an accident!" The problem isn't that drivers or cyclists are jerks. The problem is lack of education for how to share the roads since sidewalks aren't safer and many areas do not have great bike trails that people can use to commute. And for any cyclist, the best way to learn (other than taking one of those vehicular cycling classes some areas have) is to find a group and practice with experienced riders. Experienced riders will take the lane properly, communicate with drivers well, and keep their group safe. I know that many responses would be about cyclists not belonging on the roads. That of course riding along the curb is safer and sidewalk is even safer. Trust me, I thought the same thing even a few months ago. And even as a newbie cyclist I'm afraid to get into the roads. I'm not fast enough, not good enough at merging, not comfortable enough to react well if something bad happens. But many cyclists posting these videos are people that know their stuff. Chances are they know what they are doing. And taking the lane is the safest option for the cyclist, the driver and the pedestrians on the sidewalk. If you are really pissed with it, complain to the municipal or state government to setup more bike lanes or trails so commuters don't have to use roads.

I need to clarify a comment I made in regards to this incident. My reply was for cyclists in the United States of America in the north america continent. I was corrected that passing as seen in the video is legal in the country of the incident ,my bad. Since receiving that information I think the fault is of course the driver of the motor vehicle. I sincerely hope everyone is okay. I myself have been hit by 8 cars in 6 years since deciding to ride to work by bike (10-14K a year). 1 TBI and 4 more concussions. BELL hates me because of their replacement policy for accident victims. 4 helmets in 6 years, not all could be claimed. Everyone PLEASE RIDE/BE SAFE. FYI, here is my tagline to my email! “Bicycling is a big part of the future. It has to be. To everybody commenting "ride closer to the curb" or similar things, it is simply not safe to do so, I normally do that when cycling (I don't want confrontation with another driver through taking the lane, which is legal but large amounts of nz drivers are un-aware of that) and often I have come within inches of being squished between a parked car and a passing car. It simply isn't safe. And it is illegal to cycle on the footpath in NZ, so a cyclist is left with no other choice as most cities here have bad cycling infrastructure.

Its futile arguing who is at fault here.Its obvious the driver of the car is an inconsiderate wanker.But most drivers are still saying the cyclist is at fault.I really cannot fathom the mind of a driver that thinks he has a right to endanger a cyclists life,in order to overtake them.I gave up caring what motorists think of me,a long time ago.I ride safely and have never deliberately run a red light.I do see some very bad cyclists,but where I live I see a hell of a lot more bad motorists,but on the whole most people behave themselves.KZbin gives the impression that all cyclists are Whining babies.

Typical dismissal of bicycle related incidents as if it means nothing. Just ask them if a 40 tonne HGV did that with the same speed differential to them in a police car would they look at it differently. We all know the answer. As for the requirement for bright colours/lights, that's a massive red herring and there are zero facts surrounding that making you more visible. The Transport Research facility here in the UK did extensive testing and found jersey colour day or night makes jack shit difference. Either you look and see or you don't. Banning black/dark coloured motorvehciles would be interesting to see if it improved the crash statisics, (it won't). I now press for common assault charges instead of careless/dangerous driving as if I am fearful of my safety/have had violence (to the mind) thrust upon me that is a common assault defined in law. It's less easy for the police to dismiss.

Yes, very typical of lazy cops (the vast majority of cops), they only act in self interest. I do always wear what the idiot Police would claim to make me more visible and use bright (daylight visible) lights, but that is only so the Police don't suggest I could have been more visible. If a driver wants to threaten a cyclist, they will, if anything, advanced warning of a cyclist will only give these aggressive drivers more time to plan the threat.

I have an interesting story. In January this year I flew out for a 3-month cycle tour of NZ from Germany. People there told me how dangerous it could be, but I decided to cycle how I do in Germany - normal clothing, old road bike, no helmet, just casual. I seemed to be the odd-one-out because all the Kiwi cyclists I saw looked as if they were training for Tour de France. In 3 months, I cycled 4000kms and had no problems at all. I actually found all road users very courteous, and even the police weren't bothered about my non-helmet usage. Maybe it was because I looked like a "normal" person, and that they could see the person instead of seeing just another cyclist?

I have seen a great many "normal looking" people on bikes passed very dangerously, not sure why you would be any different. I never saw an adult riding without a helmet, but strangle heard about, and saw on TV the Police stopping people without helmets, but the Police do tend to actually do their job when a camera crew is following then, otherwise, no so much!

It is not possible for a car (especially one this size) to share this lane and give the New Zealand minimum 1.5 meter clearance for passing a cyclist. If you have mental stress when see a cyclist in the recommended position in the lane but you feel a cyclist isn't in the position you feel is correct then driving just isn't for to you. consider less stressful modes of transport. If this driver has the same condition as you he should do the same, or maybe just buy a much smaller car, I have seen this driver many times and he always drives on his own and aggressively, perhaps he needs the big car to compensate for something as it is never needed to carry friends or family.

+Alex Arnold That would not surprise me, a study showed that a cyclist with Police written on there back would get much more clearance, the fact that drivers have time to read cyclists backs before deciding how close to buzz them made it clear that the problem was not visibility, the problem is how much of a threat you are to the person passing you. As it is, with the Police refusing to charge drivers for unsafe passing of cyclists, cyclists are not a threat to drivers licences, so the dangerous passes continue. What you do to be safe is similar to what I do on my motorbike, I don't bother with Hi Viz, I dress like a gang member, that way I am given more clearance than cops get on motorbikes, again, proving it is not being seen that counts, it is being seen as a threat that gets you respect on New Zealand's roads. If the Police were serious about public safety, they would run campaigns with plain clothed cops on bikes, charging unsafe drivers, no doubt word would soon get around, and cyclist intimidation would stop. Failing that, if the Police actually did their jobs we would still see improvement.

The Police have "lost" a lot of my complaints, they strangely managed to find two of them that were followed up by a Green Party MP, that sadly also felt that cyclists were not worth protecting from dangerous motorists - that was after the Green Party approached me for videos, and I gave them two that were much worse than they were looking the challenge the Police on. If you are a cyclist in New Zealand, do not trust Julie Anne Genter, an MP for the Green Party, see was in agreement that drivers should not be charged for passing cyclists dangerously (does not sound like a Green Party policy to me, but there you have it!).

Dave Moore Sadly, this being New Zealand, it took the Police five months to decide to do nothing, and as New Zealand does not require vehicle insurance there is no point contacting any insurers. Even if the driver had been banned for a while he would not have to worry about his dangerous behaviour effecting his motoring costs. This is why New Zealand's roads are amongst the most dangerous in the developed World.

I really find it unnerving that I may share a road with the multiple idiots who comment that the cyclist is somehow at fault for the actions and decisions taken by the driver of the orange car. I hate car drivers who cannot cope with a bicycle on the road in front of them, make stupid errors, compromising the safety of another human being and then blame the cyclist. Bunch of dicks. As a car driver, who can competently and safely pass another road user, I find comments such as snowcatxx87's offensive. You do not speak for me, you are just highlighting your own lack of driving skill as well as refusal to accept responsibility for your own actions.

Bicycles do not have to wait behind traffic, bicycles are able (in the Road Code) to filter through traffic. The car that was driving too fast for the conditions is a regular sight in West Auckland and is very well know for dangerous driving in this area. What nobody in this area understands is why the Police refuse to do anything about the driver. The belief held is the the driver is a cop or linked to the Police and that is why the driver's behaviour continues. This driver doesn't change behaviour, and doesn't only target cyclists, the horn being sounded was a car the driver cut in front of. This driver is aggressive around all road users (at the time of the video the vehicle had been owned by the same person for the last 10 years)

Haider Aljabori I also only get passes like this when I claim the lane. You known, a driver can't squeeze passed within the lane, which is extremely dangerous, so to show they don't like being forced to use another lane, as per the law, some drivers, that would pass dangerously anyway, will then do this type of pass instead of the more dangerous pass they have planned. The point is the driver would have passed dangerously anyway, but this way less of the dangerous drivers will actually make a dangerous pass after having had to find a safe gap in the first place. This is New Zealand, some drivers will target cyclists regardless of conditions, that is just what happens in a country with lazy scum for cops. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnKweaBrpdaVp6c in a country that celebrates violence.

I think this is the cyclist's fault. If you go back you can see the cyclist pass the stopped cars on the shoulder. If he/she had obeyed most rules and stopped behind the cars at the light nothing would have happened. I know of nothing else that peeves a driver more than passing them while they are stopped on the shoulder and forcing them to pass you a second time. Be smart and stop behind the cars at all stop lights and stop signs. I am a cyclist who has been hit 8 times by cars (all their fault and everyone had an officer's report) and the last thing I do is pass on the shoulder. When traffic stops I take the center of the lane behind all other traffic, stop, and wait to make the light and/or sign to be smart and safe.

I'm not saying the orange car isn't being deliberately vindictive (although we can't say why from this clip) . What I will say is that I dare anyone including NZTA nutters to show me a road in Auckland where any Lane is wide enough to allow 1.5 metres space for a Cyclist or anything else. The lanes in NZ are barely wide enough for a car. So what they are saying is that a Cyclist simply has full use of the lane regardless of time of day (rush hour). This seriously contributes to motorist anger against cyclists.
@arlemfraz

Northern Cyclist TVL I said the driver was a jerk. I also said that a lot of these angry Cyclist clips don't show what causes the reactions. I also said that leaving a 1.5m gap (as quoted under the clip) is not realistic. Please don't start quoting the road code again as it is never enforced aga8nst cyclists only for them. Cyclists never have any responsibility but always shove it in people's faces. My comments are my observations not debates. I have found cyclists expect the whole congested traffic system to just understand they mean well even when holding up traffic and get in the way. They see everyone else as selfish even when they are so I'm not debating it's a lost cause.

***** I'm sure you did nothing (and I mean that sincerely). All I said was that there a lot of angry Cyclist clips and I'm sure some leave out what they did. My point about the silliness of expecting 1.5m in Auckland particularly is that it is impractical. So quite possibly many cars on Auckland roads have had frustrations of cyclists blocking roads in peak hour traffic. Even on a motorbike I've noticed cars getting more angry over stuff. Does this excuse his behavior? Of course not. Even if you did do something it's inexcusable to put your life at risk. So I'm not debating behavior just the overall picture in Auckland and that it's not always practical to cycle in peak hour. Judging from KZbin clips this would be true of London as well.

+Arlem Fraznikito The majority of cyclist's KZbin videos in NZ are mine and I have always been forthcoming to the Police with all video evidence including the time leading up to the incident, so I have no idea why with the majority of cases in NZ being of this nature, why you would even start to think cyclists are to blame in any way for the way aggressive drivers behave. Do you not think cyclist just get angry because there are drivers deliberately threatening them in the most cowardly way? The is nothing impractical about cycling, or passing cyclists on Auckland's roads kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKKTd4uDe9V9eqs cyclists do not cause delays, car congestion causes delays. I have never been delayed by a cyclist, however, cars have added 30mins to my 20-25 minute commute. To be fair, your a small cyclist riding almost in the middle of the road, blocking traffic, what did you expect, you also have the responsibility to look after your own safety, careless as the driver is, it did not look intentional and looked as much your fault for deliberately riding far too much in the centre of the road, perhaps just to be difficult and blocking the road. .

Lol the police dont even care. They're probably laughing at how sensitive you are. Maybe, just maybe you shouldn't be riding on a road with no bike lane and heavy traffic. I get the whole "share the road" argument, but usually cyclists enjoy being assholes and holding up traffic. Had you have been a decent cyclist and you know, rode on the sidewalk that NOBODY was even walking on, the guy wouldn't have passed you. If you want to gamble with your life just because you want to ride on a road without a bike lane & hold up traffic, be my guest. But if you're ever seriously injured, you have nobody to blame but yourself for refusing to ride in a safer area.

Ok, I'm not a serious cyclist like I don't ride my bike everywhere everyday. But I do ride a road bike and when I do I don't take up an entire lane, I ride on or below the white line why do you feel the need to take up an entire lane and cause a bunch of traffic?
@TheVexatiousLitigant
@TheVexatiousLitigant 9 жыл бұрын
+MrNatetheepic Cyclists are advised to ride about a meter from the edge of the road to avoid storm-water drains and debris (both can be seen in this video, and to be more visible..If a lane is too narrow to be shared by a passing vehicle, whilst allowing for safe clearance (in NZ the recommended minimum is 1.5 meters) then cyclists are encouraged to ride further into the lane to discourage incompetent drivers from trying to share that lane. The more you ride the more you will see the benefits of riding in a safer position, I used to pride myself on being able to use next to no road, occasionally the odd gust of wind would make me almost fall as I had no room to correct my balance. What was strange was that if I allowed myself only a few centimetres clearance, a lot of drivers would do the same. now I give myself more and drivers also give me more (well there is still the odd idiot). I hope this helps you to both understand why more cyclists are riding in a safer position, and gives you an understanding that will help you ride more safely. You will always get the odd nutter, for example this driver (he had owned this car for the previous 10 years) is well known in the area for dangerous driving, and as with most criminals there were the usual signs of having no respect for the law i.e. the car was uninsured for use on public roads. What is important, is that the Police act appropriately when provided with this evidence, in order to remove the dangerous drivers from the roads.
@MrNatetheepic

i guess i can see that, cant you pull off to the side (not stop just stay on the white line) when it is safe to allow more people to pass? im not in any way excusing the driver because he was an idiot and i deal with these kinds of people almost every time i go out (honking, tailgating even when they have plenty of room to pass throwing things at me etc...). but for the most part everyone gives me plenty of room while passing. i think it is a good safe distance to ride a foot or so away from the curb.

MrNatetheepic Yes I can, and do pull over when I feel it is the right thing to do, there are two lanes here and so naturally it is very easy for drivers to pass safely as most did, and this was just a group of cars on an otherwise quiet day (I planned my ride for low traffic)It is hard to pull over in NZ before a driver has already dangerously squeezed passed, but given the chance I will. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aanad5KQmamfebc kzbin.info/www/bejne/raaop2SVg7ygpbM kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYSYpn6detKNj68 kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqvVpYavYtJsb9k kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4XZaZlvrc-CqJI kzbin.info/www/bejne/h525oIOjrKh0n9U kzbin.info/www/bejne/opangpVnpb5lpsU kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmS9gYyZe9yfq7M

MrNatetheepic There won't be any more on this channel, I left NZ last year, I now live in the UK, I often hear how bad the roads are here, and I have had the odd close pass, but the vast majority give me lots of room, even most of the ones I know are trying to intimidate me are nothing after my rides in NZ I even have the odd laugh at their attempts when I think about how NZ drivers would actually hit me and the cops say it was nothing and not to complain unless I actually got injured (again).I think most (sadly not all) helmet camera cyclists are happy to share the road with respectful drivers, and pull over, it just doesn't make much point posting videos to most, and they never get many views, so can feel like a waste of time. You really should think about road position, riding further out does discourage close passes, though I only need the do it a little now I am in the UK kzbin.info/door/nKTpKt6hsZEaaT_BAYa27Q I know it feels wrong, but if you can stand the feeling long enough (and it took me a while) you should see benefits, replaced be a smaller number of drivers that take offence to you taking a safer position. Yes, you would think so, but having tried it in New Zealand it is very likely to offend a motorist and give them the urge to try to knock you off. I am claiming the lane more now I am in the UK with far more civilised results. You need to think that New Zealand only has dumb Police Officers that love power tripping as much as the dick in the orange car (as the Police lost this complaint three times it is very likely he has Police connections), drivers know this and know it means they can drive dangerously around vulnerable road users

waw well I just got me a 125 scooter because the use of a bicycle where I live is just deadly... yet..... plenty of drivers do not respect scooters... as if they had some sort of mental impairment... plenty will start trying to follow me as close to my scooter as possible... leaving only a gap of roughly 50 cm... to perhaps 1 meter... this is pretty bad considering that over here the streets have a ton of irregularities... and it is just horrible when the one following happens to be a big bus

+Robert Ostman I saw enough scooters and small motorbikes getting tailgated and cut up in New Zealand to know that getting either would be a bad idea. Only wanting a small motorbike, I opted for a Black Suzuki Inazuma GW250. with twin exhausts it looks more like a 500cc than a 250cc. Another "safety" measure in NZ when riding a motorbike is to never wear hi viz! Hi Viz is actually very limited in getting you seen anyway, but what it does confirm is that you are not in a biker gang, so all fear induced respect is lost, you are better off sticking to jeans and a black leather jacket, for ultimate safety in New Zealand, sewing a large patch on the back (as per gang members do) and then tear it off (as per the anti gang laws) leaving the bits of remaining patch as a warning to drivers that you are possibly a gang member. Safety is not about being seen in NZ, it is about how much of a threat drivers see you to their personal safety, forget hi viz, go for the gang look, it is even better than a cop car at getting people to behave on the roads in NZ

+Robert Ostman All Countries have authorities to stop the loss of live on public roads being greater that the loss of lives through war, but some do not see lives as important. In NZ for example they have a bigger than average Police Force, however, working as a cop is seen by cops as being able to work at any pace they see fit, and to only act on laws they personally agree with. Year after year the NZ public say they want better policing, and year after year nothing changes. The Police pretend that occasionally being visible on the roads is all there is to policing them, and continue to cruise the streets giving out the odd simple speeding ticket where they feel like it. All it would take to fix the dangers cyclists and scooter riders face is for plain clothed Police to cycle and ride scooters, and to charge the drivers that bully them, job done, bullying drivers would worry that they are about to bully a plain clothed cop, and stop (or massively reduce how often it happens). The Police have the tools needed, they just can't be bothered to work for their pay!

I have also notice that there is a strong lack of filtration systems for the helmets currently being used... this is... for example as the cars use... where if the car driver wants... can close the windows and turn on the A/C... some cars actually have filters that will clear the air from impurities... they use hepa filters and other systems that will purify the air... this is not seen in helmets... well perhaps the only exception is the one present in industrial helmets... as there are those made for welders and others... that include a purifying systems... to me seems clear that we need such helmets... and I am actually thinking on designing this option... yet I am currently with no real cash to jump into such expensive task... I am thinking that if I was to take this idea to the army... they... may want to provide cash flow and other resources...

I find the quite roads with no witnesses are very dangerous, as that is where NZ drivers get to treat people how they want to. Little wonder cycle tourists talk about the dangerous drivers in New Zealand, the rural roads are what appeal to tourists, they don't find out until they arrive what a big mistake they have made.

+Juan Pantoja, in narrow lanes, the safest place to be is the middle of the lane, so drivers are tempted to share the lane when they don't have room. But it goes both ways. Just as cars should give bicycles a minimum of 1.5 meters, cyclists shouldn't be moving past cars without also giving them 1.5 meters.
@TheVexatiousLitigant
@TheVexatiousLitigant 8 жыл бұрын
+Timothy Fish What, even these stationary ones? So cyclists at the side of the road who have stopped also get 1.5meters? I think you need to read the Road Code. Cars are not allowed to filter!

Well, to be totally honest, it looks to me like you're taking to much lane at some points, hence you're creating a dangerous situation for yourself AND for cars trying to pass you. You KNOW some drivers get irritated pretty fast, specially on roads like these, so do yourself a little favor and ride just a little bit closer to the curve to avoid a confrontation or accident. Just my opinion, not pointing an angry finger at you. Here in Belgium situations like these don't occur, or at least not very often, simple of the fact that we have cyclist lanes pretty much everywhere. Something NZ should start to work on if you ask me, for the safety of ALL commuting traffic.
@TheVexatiousLitigant
@TheVexatiousLitigant 10 жыл бұрын
The position I take in the road is recognised to be safer than cycling further to the left, and is what a council cycling instructor said I should do. You are right that this happens less in Belgium because of the cycle lanes you have there that prevent your inconsiderate drivers for being able to do this = Good Cyclepath Door Zone separation (Belgium) But you are wrong if you think your drivers are better than the scum I found in New Zealand - (belgium) Very Close Pass 1-ALT-169 1ALT169 I cycled further left whilst in Belgium but got more dangerous passes, why do you think people in Belgium would do that? Dangerous Pass 1FAE182 1-FAE-182 Bruges (Belgium) (Belgium) LIJN Bus Close Pass (Belgium) CISO Transport - Must Pass Cyclist (Belgium) 500CEU MGIF Close Pass

TheOpelkoenjas The point is, regardless of a cyclists position in the road some drivers will make a point of passing a cyclist too close. Cycling further into the lane is recognised as a way of making cyclists more visible (and so safer) and encouraging motorists to change lanes rather than share a lane that can not be shared and allow for safe clearance. Cyclist do not do it to annoy motorists, they do it to be safer. Passing cyclists is not difficult

There was a definite reduction in the number and extremity of close passes I received after adopting best practice, I don't claim to get it right all the time, but the close passes soon remind me of the need to claim the lane more often when I get it wrong.

that was very unsafe passing and that's putting it mildly, however I have to agree with other comments here, I know that the position in the road you ride is what is taught as the best position, you avoid debris, pot holes, drain covers, other junk that just collects to the side of the road, that can cause a slip and accident, it also forces cars to give you more room on the road so that's also safer for the rider, but that's all good in theory, but in practise you're going to have people like this that think the extra seconds they gain by unsafely overtaking you is well worth you possibly losing your life, I pretty much hug the left of the road when I cycle and only come out if I have to avoid junk, it would be great if every driver was safe, gave you the time and space you needed on the road, but just look at the car that overtaken you, that car is well known to be driven by idiots, be safe man, that's all that matters.

I hear what you are saying, I only rarely ride this far out, and have only done so relatively recently , it feels wrong when I do it, but I know from experience it is safer to ride in this more visible position. I have in the past ridden so close to the curb that a gust of wind has frequently almost made me hit the curb, and despite this I got more dangerous passes. I am only interested in avoiding being hit, if it didn't work so well (not that you could tell from New Zealand's shitty drivers) I would not do it. Better still would be to hold an arm out at times as others do, but in NZ that really would be a bad idea
