I think there’s more to “good cycling” than being within the law. It’s legal to fart in a lift but I don’t do it. Most of these near misses would never happen to me because I’m humble and slow down when I see a problem situation, I don’t charge at people at full pelt screaming in anger even if they are in the wrong.

had a scary moment when a cyclist tried to squeeze through on the bike path, as I waited for opposite traffic while behind a man walking. She didn't announce her intent to pass; all I heard was a panicked 'OH!!' just before she zoomed by, but hit the rails, losing her balance. It was a nasty spill. I felt so guilty because I didn't know how it happened, but the my little camera's footage revealed she was coming up from behind and didn't alert me. Seriously, girl ... there's a guy in a 4-wheel scooter going the other way, a guy on foot just ahead of me. I waited for the scooter, then I swerved around the pedestrian, which cut her off and made her hit the side rails. If she hadn't been trying to speed through, she wouldn't have had the accident. I'm sorry to say about someone who's had an accident but it was clearly her fault. I still feel badly for her. I stayed until I knew she had help.

I agree with this. As a cyclist I don't think I have so many problems with pedestrians as I tend to predict their movements a bit more than he does, and I wouldn't filter as quickly as he does- I'd get up speed when it's a bit clearer and slow down on predictable danger points. Having said that some of the drivers in this video are shocking....

With idiot pedestrians,weve all been that person at some point in our time. Weather i was being distracted, werent thinking clearly at the time, in a rush or even not paying enough attention, weve all been there and done that. As for cyclists, im one myself now and tbh were for the most part responsible riders who do the right thing but there are a few stupid ppl out there that dont use commonnsense or follow the rules of cycling on the road path and all that shit. Sometimes by accident we do miss some signs due to drifting into a mini day dream or something but it happens. For drivers tho. They are so fucking stupidnfor the most part. They seem to think they have entitlement over everythingnwhile driving its honestly crazy. Ive often come across drivers whove parked near dorectly or completely in the way of pathways, those who fuckong honk their horn for no fucking reason, ive caught ppl on their phone and all they do is fucking brush it off and swear back like its fucking acceptable not checking their exits properly and will overtake at stupid fucking areas and points where it puts us cyclists at risk. Once in a blue moon tho, i will come across those responsible drivers who no what they doing and follow the road code as it is to which i will even sometimes stop to let them go 1st or say thankyou for doing their part but its so fucking rare to see. How so many ppl get their liscence i do not know.

Whilst ‘filtering’ is a requirement to get anywhere in a big city when on two wheels, positioning and situational awareness when doing so are vital. Whilst no longer living in London, I grew up where these videos are all taken and used to ride the same roads. The rider’s positioning is at fault for almost half the clips. I ride motorbikes as well and we talk of ‘defensive’ riding or ‘owning’ the space. But we also consider where that space is and it is sacrosanct amongst motorcyclists that you don’t undertake. Half of the clips the rider is complaining about cars turning ahead of him or crossing in front of him when he is filtering in their blind spot. If you’re not positioned in the middle of the road, how can you expect a bus crossing in front of you at Putney Bridge to see you behind the double decker that has correctly stopped to avoid going into the yellow hatched box? They can’t. So shouting at the driver as if it’s their fault is nonsense. The rider’s positioning is awful. And whilst not ideal, a car driver AHEAD of you in stationary traffic has the right to change their mind, indicate and turn into a petrol station without having a cyclist come up from their near side blind spot at 30kmh. The rider has a duty of care as much as the driver, but it is accepted in almost every context that the person coming from behind another (cycling, driving, skiing, running etc) should take extra care and be in a position and frame of mind to react to anything happening ahead of them. Arriving at speed from a blind spot in which it is ill advised to undertake, is NOT that. Further, if you’re way down the road and there is a clear space in traffic for which a car can pull into from your left (side street) you should be in a position to slow down. If they pull out directly in front of you or t-bone you, that’s wrong, that’s bad driving, that’s their fault. But shouting and making gestures at someone creeping out ahead of you because you can’t be bothered to slow down and ‘react’ is just BS. How else will any car ever pull out into what was recently recognised as the most congested city on the planet otherwise. Don’t approach junctions at 30kmh in the dark and think you own the space just because you are are the arterial road. Drivers on that same road will also be making decisions independently of you which you should be able to react to. Like leaving space for a car to pull into. A courtesy that keeps traffic flowing. Many of the pedestrian moments are complete stupidity on the part of the pedestrian, but again situational awareness would be useful. Maybe think “well, it’s rush hour and dark, so perhaps I’ll ride more slowly and keep an eye on these idiots”. Clearly some are beyond stupid and entirely at fault. But we all share the space and sometimes these people have to get across a road. Lots of these incidents are telegraphed, (as in happen ahead of the rider rather than right beside them), and so with better situational awareness could be easily avoided, rather than made an issue of, and certainly not shouted at when doing nothing wrong because the rider feels entitled. Lots are not, such as the London bus drifting into the bus lane ahead of the rider. But let’s get some balance here. As mentioned at the top, I lived in the area the poster rides and rode the very same roads for 30 years. I can count on one hand the number of incidents I had and they were all instant accidents: man walking into me - not ahead of me - from around a bus. Car brake testing me at width restrictors. Being T-boned at a junction etc. What’s more I am happy to ride fast (very fast…eg 98kmh during an Étape descent) when the moment suits. But, were I ever to ride in London again, I would think more like a driver than a cyclist and ask myself should I be positioned on this car or van’s near side blind spot, and if I am, what might they do? I wouldn’t just assume they will drive straight ahead past every junction because it suits me, not would I do my nut because a car passes across me from the opposite direction, because they’ve been let through by a car who has no idea I’m sneaking up alongside them like an Exocet middle.

I consider myself an experienced cyclist and I can see you are very experienced but I have not experienced as many incidents as you have. All those near misses on the inside of vehicles rarely happens to me because i tend to hang back when I am on the inside of vehicles. If a vehicle overtakes me I will certainly not try to keep up with them. I would say I'm a defensive cyclist and never assume I have the right of way even if I do. An apology after an accident on my bike with vehicle is not going to make me feel better. Stay safe.

Hi. Yep I have been cycling in London for about 30 years and while I have had a few close encounters I do not have anything close to what you show in your videos. I I think you are a more skilled cyclist than myself but there are lots of situations in your video where you should be slowing down, using brakes or anticipating what will happen next..eg..pedestrian running across the road @ 0:24 . 1:50 I would be slowing or coasting if I saw pedestrians were crossing the road and you obviously saw it because you braked late.

@@steveerekpaine2832 Ahhh, so you know my pain then. 🙂 The GoPro makes it look faster than it is, so I'm likely no more skilled than you. Both the situations you mentioned I had under control, as in I knew I could stop safety if necessary. With the second one, when you have pedestrians crowding a crossing, I find if you start to slow many feel you're letting them cross and, (instead of waiting for the green figure) they just go, so you have to stop. I find if I don't look like I'm going to stop, then they tend to wait. Most of the time this works. In this case they called my bluff and walked out anyway so I had to stop. Have a great week. 🙂👍

The volume of traffic, pedestrians, and your speed will end up in these situations. Until the infrastructure is resolved i can't see things improving. John, cyclists and motorcyclists do watch out for and treat most cars, trucks as if they are deliberately trying to kill you, that’s how we stay alive. We even treat a lot of cyclists, motorcycles and pedestrians that way. As a cyclist or motorcyclist you have to fight for your space on the road, if you hesitate for just a second you will be pushed out of the way sometimes violently.

@@routha3046 I'm not on a motorcycle though am I! That's a completely different vehicle and therefore your point is irrelevant. You don't drive a car like you ride a bicycle any more than you would a motorcycle that way. Also pedestrians treat cyclists very differently than they do motor vehicles. Apples and oranges. None of us are invincible! What you, and many others don't seem to get is that it's not fast. Average speed 15mph, a lot slower than you're driving your car down the same streets. I'll tell you why you think it's so fast: 1. GoPro with wide angle makes it look faster than it is. They are action cameras originally built to make snowboarders look super fast and awesome. The slight fisheye effect means the scenery around the outside edges appears to pass faster, giving a subtle warp speed effect. 2. Smaller things look faster than bigger things even when at the same speed. Slap this camera on your 2 meter wide car dashboard and suddenly the same footage would seem much slower. 3. My films have a low down POV camera angle which again gives a greater impression of speed. 4. I fast cut my video (each clip is just a few seconds long) so I can fit lots of clips in plus it keeps it dramatic. It's an age old film technique, because each clip appears so quickly your brain doesn't have time to process the scenario before the incident is happening. Because your brain is playing catch up it seems faster than it is. If I showed 20 seconds before each incident rather than one or two it would all seem far more pedestrian (pardon the pun). Drivers view this footage from the perspective of a driver, and when watching they are mentally applying the same stopping distance as their two tonne vehicle with 30mph of momentum. As my cycle and I combined weigh less than 100kg, and I have big shiny brake discs on front and rear I can stop from 15mph to zero in just a few metres. Plus I'm cycling with my fingers on the brakes and am paying attention (unlike drivers who are so often playing on their phones, fiddling with their sat nav/radios, distracted by their kids in the back etc. Don't take my word for it, look closely at my video again, see how many times it seems that I was at blistering speed (which you now know isn't as fast as it seemed) yet stopped on a dime the second someone jumps/pulls out. The bottom line for cyclists is that in any crash with a car, bus or truck you will come off worse, this means you need to cycle defensively and slower, slower than you are going at the moment, it won't be as much fun, but a lot safer. The cycling infrastructure in the UK is terrible, cycling needs to be prioritised, I'm surprised how many people cycle considering how dangerous an occupation it is. My dear cyclist, you don't seem to show it, but you are in control of your bike, and you know the hazards you'll come across cycling around London, yet you don't slow down, you don't take the correct action. I'm a cyclist, and I don't meet with any of the hazards you meet with, but the thing is, you are always half of the hazard. It's like you want to make a point, so you allow accidents to almost happen, instead of anticipating and pre-empting.

It's not that, I find that cycling through London rush hour every day you are constantly ignored as a cyclist. If a pedestrian walked out on you once or twice then fine, wave them past. On the busy sections of my commute there are thousands of pedestrians pouring out of train stations in their way to work, so the walking out on you is near constant, and you stop to wave one past and then ten go and you're stuck waiting even though you have the green. If you want to make progress (I also need to get to work) you have to hold your ground where you have right of way. It's a bluff, but if I look like I'm not going to stop for them (I always will stop for, or avoid them), many pedestrians will choose to wait. Is a style of cycling that is forced by the attitude of the pedestrians, if they looked first, and waited for a gap or the green man there it would not be required. They don't however, so I force the issue, I have the green and I am coming through so you will have to wait. Doesn't work on all (hence my videos) but it does work on most. Not ideal but that's how it is for me.

As a cyclist, don't let people victim shame you. To cycle on the roads, following the rules, at an average speed of 15mph is not provocation. These near misses were predominantly caused by pedestrians or drivers not looking before walking/pulling out. Thank you for understanding my goal in posting these, it is very much to promote discussion. So many people have an unconscious bias where they will blame the cyclist in all incidents regardless of the facts. Their argument boils down to the view that if the cyclist wasn't there, didn't exist, then there wouldn't have been an issue when the pedestrian/driver walked/pulled out without looking. We do exist however, so we need people to start thinking cyclist, to start looking and taking care on the roads. If my videos get people to think twice, to have a double check before they move out into a road then it's worth it.

What rule is that John? All road users have a duty to avoid an accident, even pedestrians. Pedestrians however do not have default right of way in the road. The exception is, if a driver is turning into a side road, and a pedestrian has already started to cross, then the driver must give way. If you're already on a road (not turning) and a pedestrian starts to walk out, they do not have right of way. Y’know what? I used to cycle to and from work regularly years ago and never ever had an incident like these. I’ve had a thought about the issue here, and I think I have the answer. Firstly stop taking the steroids, or whatever angry pills you take... Take all the gears and cameras off the push bikes and cyclists, put the Lycra in the bin and replace with a bell on the handlebars and a Sturmey - Archer 3 speed gear system. Read and obey the Highway Code, and take a cycling proficiency test. Take it slow and steady and if anyone drives into you or steps out on front give them several dings of the bell! One final thing for every pedestrian, driver, rider and all road users - throw away your mobile phones. The world will truly be a better place, amen🤗 (have to admit though that this compilation was rather entertaining😂)

Attitude and anticipation helps a lot. I've experienced similar things in NL (and a lot worse things than I've seen in any video about cycling in the UK) but once you let go of the race mentality and anticipate better, such situations become rare. One of the big problems that I saw when I was in London that is worse than in NL, is that pedestrians don't wait for traffic lights because they take too f-ing long to go green! They really need to reprogram the traffic lights (not just shorter periods but green waves to make up for some of the lost efficiency of long duration red/green) or take some other measures, as the only ones waiting are tourists!
@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007
@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 4 жыл бұрын
@@WHS_reviews The city could do with a complete rethink with how we manage traffic. The number of cyclists increases every year and they've just tried to cater for that by squeezing it in around the old existing traffic infrastructure, which bottle-necks everyone. Soon the UK will be legalising electric scooters also, which will unleash another wave of non-car commuters. Hopefully that will force the government to have a rethink. I don't have the answers but I feel that some radical steps are required. Especially as governments try and meet air quality quotas etc.
@WHS_reviews
@WHS_reviews 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's what I felt in London, it really needs an overhaul but they should just start with the traffic lights and have more zebra crossings and make using them compulsory for pedestrians. Space is an issue here in NL too. More electric vehicles (pedelecs only at the moment, e-scooters are not allowed and fast-pedelecs must go on the main road with cars) means the cycle paths get full so you can't cycle at high speed at all. You already couldn't in cities like Leiden where cycle paths are narrow, and separate from the cars means that you can't, as a fast cyclist, move to the sections where cars ride to overtake slow cyclists. Some of the actions take here are to add roads around the outside of cities so motorists don't need to go through the centres. Not sure if that's an option in London. What I saw of the country side in the UK from a few trips day trips and some videos on youtube, is that space there is also a problem, narrower roads even than in NL and windy, so lots of spots where you can't see far ahead.

@@WHS_reviews I grew up cycling in the countryside and it's scary being on a cycle when a car going 50-60mph comes flying around a corner ahead. I have a car, and I like driving, but I'd be happy if they closed the city centre to private vehicles during the week. Encourage more people to cycle, scooter or use public transport. It would be a big move and would require a lot more investment in public transport and would take years to put in place, but we can't just keep chucking more and more cars into the city.
