Watch as an officer chases down a suspected mobile phone thief using the suspect’s own bike, only to discover a huge haul of drugs.
Sergeant Alan Cooley recently reflected on what could only be described as a "Benny Hill-style" chase, where the suspect's own bike became the officer's unlikely tool for pursuing and ultimately arresting the offender.
Sergeant Cooley and his colleague, PC Ama Thind, were searching the local area after a mobile phone theft when they spotted a man fitting the suspect's description. When they approached him, he dropped his bike and fled on foot. PC Ama Thind immediately started to chase after him and Sergeant Cooley - who had a known habit among colleagues of commandeering random bikes to catch offenders - mounted the suspect's bike and joined the pursuit.
After manoeuvring through the streets and across a busy road, Sergeant Cooley caught up to the suspect and tried to talk him into giving up. In a last ditch attempt to evade Sergeant Cooley, the man ran down the street and discarded a black Nike backpack behind a bin outside a house.
Sergeant Cooley was joined by his colleagues who helped him apprehend and arrest the man. They also recovered the man's bag which had a large amount of cannabis inside.
The officer's quick thinking and unconventional use of the bike led to a successful arrest. The man has since pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply and proceeds of crime.
