You can tell the officer's ego was definitely hurt in this one. Any reasonable person would know after the first 15 seconds that there is no way in hell to catch up to that camaro. This is called getting emotionally involved and thus created more danger by the cop's actions than that camaro.

As a retired LEO that retired in supervisory capacity, I can state with confidence, that there is absolutely no justification why ANY police officer should be chasing a vehicle at the speed the Trooper was driving, unless the Trooper has knowledge of a violent FELONY that was committed by the driver of the Camaro, PRIOR TO the Trooper attempting to initiate a traffic stop for a misdemeanor traffic violation. All the Trooper has here as PROBABLE CAUSE is a very "sketchy at best" MISDEMEANOR traffic violation to initiate an attempt to make the traffic stop, which is NOT sufficient to endanger the general public by a high speed pursuit, ESPECIALLY in a highly populated by heavy traffic secondary roadway after leaving the interstate. Equally as disturbing to me, is the fact that no supervisory personnel interceded to call off the pursuit. If this was one of my officers, I would have got on the radio and ORDERED the Trooper to terminate the pursuit as soon as it reached such high speed that it put the public in jeopardy. Otherwise, I am equally liable for the Trooper's actions of neglegence, because I didn't stop the pursuit as a supervisor. In court trying to defend gross negligence without "qualified immunity" because of gross negligence is not where any officer wants to be. That is why, high speed pursuits that do not involve violent felony charges are against most city & county law enforcement agency departmental SOP (Standard Operational Procedures) these days due to the aspect of vicarious liability, punitive damages, and even criminal prosecution can be placed upon officers. From my perspective, this entire situation is a prime example of a legitimate psychological phenomenon that we police command staff & police instructors call "contempt of cop". It's an ideal most often initiated by young, inexperienced law enforcement officers who can not detach themselves from a situation where someone from the general public doesn't obey THE OFFICER'S commands to stop, or follow what the officer perceives as being a lawful order. In the old days we used to call it "having a severe case of Rookie-itis". It is a dangerous training issue that needs to be addressed on a stricter level.

The punch line is, after the officer turned around, chased after me and pulled me over, when he approached my window, I mentioned to him that there was a nasty looking accident a couple miles back (yes, I did stop and ask if help was needed but everybody was ok). He said "yeah, I know, that's where I was going." So he turned around and chased me down for 8 mph over while on his was to an accident. This officer needs to be investigated and his ego checked. He chased literally nothing for 5 minutes just because he got embarrassed. How many lives did he endanger with this reckless pursuit of nothing? Why was he even attempting to stop him. He clearly just spotted a performance car who was doing nothing illegal, decided to pace him and run his tag looking for a reason to pull him over. This is not a legal tactic. You can’t just run random plates because you are having a ego trip. I’m glad he embarrassed this dude!

@@MrRangersfan123 How do you know this? Did you hear the cop say "I'm bored, I think I'll F with this driver." How do you know the plate scanning program in the cop car didn't flag this car and required it to be pulled over? You know that's how it works now, right? Do you think it's still 1980 and they need to call in a plate and wait or someone at the station to tell them if they are legal. You know that last time a cop was behind you, your plates were run before you even knew they were there? And it was done automatically, with no input from the officer? The whole time a cop car is driving around, it's scanning and checking plates it sees and when it hits on something, it alerts the officer with everything about that tag, and why it needs pulled over. You don't have to de doing anything wrong in the car. Could have been an expired tag, registration, suspended license, warrant. Heck they could be notifying you your spouse was in an accident and you need to be at the hospital. They typically don't know anything about you, care, or suspect you for anything until the system tells them. Besides, if this person didn't do anything wrong, or needed pulled over for any reason, they wouldn't have run. Unless they are stupid, because they have the car and owners info, so they are f'ed way more than they would have been if they just stopped. I once ran from a cop and got away back in the 80's. I was young (read stupid) and speeding, and couldn't afford any points. That was also when cop car cameras weren't a big thing, let alone HD, or they had the tech they do now to be at you employyers address and have your social media accounts read before you even get to where you were going.. Only an idiot or someone trying to avoid instant jail time runs from cops now. Once they see your plate now, your busted, so enjoy the race and endangering others on public roads, it'll probably be the last opportunity you have for a while.

One thing I Iearned in my time in State Narcotics (of my particular State) is that if at ANY time you lose actual visual contact with the fleeing vehicle, you've lost the case in court, and might as well give up the chase. All the defense attorney has to ask is, _"Did you maintain unbroken visual contact with the suspect's vehicle?"_ Because if you did not, you have NO WAY to prove that the vehicle you ultimately stopped was actually the one you saw commit the infraction It will NOT stand up in court, unless you have a specific TAG NUMBER id. And that is rarely the case in a high speed chase.

@Lynx Actual I am the patriarch of all Newmans in the universe. Getting stopped for going a bit over the speed limit is $70-$200 in most states. Running from police gives you a felony, reckless driving, etc. So in the end, you get a felony, a criminal driving ticket that fines you several thousand, and risk killing other drivers on the road that could be your own family. Maybe the guy shouldn't drive a sports car that they couldn't afford. Everyone with a 500 credit score are the ones flying around in those shitboxes. If it was this guy crashing into your mom on the road because he was running from the police, you'd think differently.
@killermogle2 жыл бұрын
@Lynx Actual Personally, I would say that it's safer to be following someone than it is to be on adrenaline trying to outmaneuver a police cruiser. Also the family argument was meant to make you understand that it's unsafe regardless and people typically don't care about things until it affects them personally. There has to be a level of law and order in society, otherwise murderers/kidnappers/terrorists/etc. can simply get away through a fast car. While the best solution isn't someone chasing them at over 100mph, it's the best solution. When you step into a vehicle, you understand the risks associated with operation of the vehicle on private as well as public roads. Statistics are also irrelevant in this particular instance. No matter who decided to ram into your family's car and kill all of them, you would undoubtedly have a change of personality to where if you saw them in court you'd probably grill them for the entirety of the trial. Think about your own family in this example as every other member of society who does indeed have a family. Would you be alright with someone doing this while they're on the road?
