If they won't adjust, they're in the wrong profession. We need to change the perception and procedures of policing so that it attracts more people who care about "serving" and fewer care about "authority."

@@colinw7205 it sure seems to doesn't it ! I have always wondered about that, how do we know that the kind of people who are applying to the police force are the "right" kind ? it seems that we need to have better filters on who gets to do the job....even a polygraph to weed out the liars and racist's and opportunists's...all that power seems to corrupt people, I have had personal dealings with some officers who absolutely have no business wearing that uniform. Well policing isn't a volunteering participation, they get paid by the hour whether a crime has been committed or not. Patrol is their main duty (unless they specialize to other units), they get paid to drive around their jurisdiction, risk their lives to protect others, lowering crime rate, etc. There are some officers and sergeants who don't really care and I'm not denying their existence, but don't label all officers or higherups as those who think arresting people means they can get paid. They don't decide who goes to prison.

I am a 61 year old war vet with 3 grown kids: my oldest is about to retire from the Marine Corps with 6 combat deployments and is the father of 4 beautiful girls, the next older child is a Navy special ops vet with 2 incredibly beautiful little boys, my third child is my daughter who married her high school sweetheart and bore her second child in prison after being set up by a sleazy system of cops who knew she had become an opiate addict from a dentist's treatment to cure her jaw pain with opiate drugs. Instead of less addicting options. But she was 'thrown away' as a convicted felon with lupus, thru a system that manufactured her. Bottom line, erroneous thinking that all convicted people deserve their punishments. She went on to the prison's Dean's list in her fight to survive her 5 &1/2 sentence. Her husband has the two boys and is also a college graduate helping her so they can raise them like 'Ozzie and Harriet". Lesson; don't judge. They chose life and still have courage to face what comes next.

This woman talks a good game after being criminally responsible for the death of this young man and the destruction of his family. The fact, she appears to feel bad isn't really helping anybody because when it comes down to making a decision she lacks the courage to make the correct one. She had a choice and now she deserves to be preaching this message with her supervisor behind bars. She is the reason why the public has lost trust in the police, shame on her for not seeing the obvious. This story just makes me sick.

I agree that police have to rethink the model. My issue is the constant protrolling neighborhoods and traffic stops. It feels like harassment and constant intimidation. We have cameras that can do a better job. Send a ticket in the mail or use other forms of contact. One time my family and I ate out for dinner and an officer was standing/guarding in the resturant possibly to keep order or as a preventive measure. I didn't enjoy my dinner because his presence made me feel hyper. I never went back to that resturant.

At least, she came forward to confessed that she put her career over the life of this man by executing an unfair arrest. Obviously, she is not the only one. The rest would say nothing. It shouldn't sound coincidential that she compares the US situation with UK. Another thing are the inmediate warrants when you have no money to pay. And, I am not talking about bail. I am talking about traffic tickets where you are not able to proof innocence. Most people don't know because most people carry money or checking books to the court. This is one of the biggest crimes of our judiciary system. Even listening to her, I can perceive that she still doesn't get it. She has great intensions and perhaps has even been proud of her job. I have learned that isn't about the people. We, the people are often blind. I used to be.

Police departments need to take a long and serious look at their priorities. First things first, cops have now lost the trust of law-abiding citizens with their "policing for profit" scams. There is no honor in hiding on the side of the road behind bushes with a radar gun. That is the first step in restoring a level of trust between drivers and road pirates. Second, cops should be taken out of their cars - permanently - and the majority of their time should be walking a beat in the same neighborhoods to build trust with those communities. Third is arresting people and throwing them in jail for non-violent offenses has ruined uncountable lives. There is a better way to mediate disagreements between civilians and cops. I am NOT talking about felons, rapists, murderers or people who assault others. They should be disabled immediately and put in prison. But these petty drug violations are filling up prisons with non-violent offenders. Basically the entire method of policing in the US needs to be pulled up by the roots and a new face should appear on law enforcement. It should go back to "Serve and Protect" instead of "Thieve, Lie and Deny".

Soooo, you are ok with a "felons" live being ruined but not a drug offenders? You do realize when it pertains to addictive drugs, the great majority of these users commit crimes to buy those drugs they were caught with. Your logic makes no sense. What does need to happen is the sentence needs to be the sentence. Once you have completed your time,or supposedly paid your debt to society, that should be it. Should there be a record for the courts to keep track of your prior behavior for future sentencing? Sure. But there shouldnt be a record employers can access. Now,someone's arguement will be ,"what about child molesters? Do you want child molesters working at a daycare when they get out?" My answer to that is they should never get out. So sentencing laws and practices are the real issue. This also comes to felons being stripped of their right to bear arms. This is not only illegal to do,but is impossable. Without ratification nothing in the bill of rights can be taken by government. If someone is too dangerous to own a firearm, they are too dangerous to be let out into society because someone who intends to cause harm to others will. No matter what tool they choose to use. And any felon who woke up this morning and decided they wanted a firearm has one in his possession right now.

Police arrest and ticketing quotas are illegal in several states, but there have been police officers that have come out saying that this "unofficially" still occurs. We actually lost respect for cops back in the sixties, seventies, eighties, etc., etc! We just have short memories or were too young to have been around then. It wasn’t always on the news, but occasionally made the headlines, in effect minimizing the public’s awareness. This is nothing new, only way way worse than its ever been. Social media has everything to do with the current awareness, especially on KZbin, where things are exposed! Plus there’s way too much BIG money in fines and tickets for them to ever volunteer to give it up. They’d need to be made to! This is nowhere more common than on the country’s interstate highways and freeways, where most if this revenue hunting occurs. And it’s completely out of control! Hopefully folks will become more aware, and actually do something about it. Maybe a complete ‘re-education’ of the various police departments is in order. But don’t hold your breath . . . Imho . . .

I liked what she said, but she was WRONG 3:20 into the video. "Reasonable suspicion" is required to "detain" a person. You suspect them of a crime, but do not yet have suspicion to make an arrest. "Probable cause" is a higher standard than reasonable suspicion, and THAT is required to make an arrest. There is a difference. I hope she was aware and misspoke, but cops seldom know the law.

Good for her. There are very few cops that have any compassion once they've been on the force for about 5 years or more. They become cold and hard inside. From my experience many of them (I'd say 30% to 40%) are not much better than the criminals they arrest. I am from a family with a long history of law enforcement. I've watched them and they're cop friends for 50 years now. It's sad but true. Most of them start out good but it's a tough job that hardens them like prison hardens criminals.

Sgt Mitchell's explanation of the history of policing is perfect, from its inception in England. Officers were referred to as "Bobby's or Peelers" for Robert Peel. I was a longtime resident of Sacramento. My hope is that her experience and knowledge can permeate within that department so that folks with a low socioeconomic background can exist a little bit more freely. And also be given the police support that many other citizens are afforded. My only question is why not arrest the wife instead of the husband if someone had to go. After all, she did lie to a law enforcement officer. God Bless Sarge.

As a former cop from many decades ago, American policing, like most of our once trusted institutions is dying. They are dying due to a lack of compassion, empathy, and consideration for the plight of others. Blind, strict adherence to rules, regulations, and laws have removed the sense of balance, fairness, and reason that used to be central to American policing practices. What used to be regarded as a noble profession (peace officer), has been now relegated largely to a predator mentality, (law enforcer). I am not impressed. Today, force, often with guns drawn, is the first order of contact. Gone are the days of reasonable psychology and diplomacy required to help resolve problems quickly and preserve the peace. In my view, in far too many instances, cops cause more problems then they are worth. Their mere presence brings complication, potential loss of money and freedom wherever they go. They are to be avoided, and much of this should be laid at the feet of the police themselves. I find most are poorly trained in people skills. The average intelligence level is sorely lacking as opposed to earlier times. Perhaps the most poignant example of policing today can be observed in the behavior of school children. While attending elementary school back in the 1960s, kids would wave to passing police as they went about their rounds. The cop would return the wave, and police were considered an integral part of the community. Not anymore! Kids openly give cops the bird or yell profanities at them. A kid waving at a cop today may incur the wrath of his peers, or the cop may harass the kid wanted to know why he waved at him! This is pure insanity! I suspect a great deal of this starts in the home, and a vicious cycle is formed. The government cannot be trusted as its nature is predatory, authoritarian and unaccountable at all levels. With enormous, unjustified salaries and outrageous pensions, it is now a system that serves itself, not the people who are forced to pay. Until substantical chances are made this trend will continue.
