I think it's really interesting how much of a negative ending you've put together with the Broadway Showstopper™️. You know, in the confrontation scene the Brunch Buddy chooses to ignore the nuance being provided and then admonish the protag for use of catchy phrases and memes. And the protag's response is to...sing a song about ACAB. It kind of mirrors the moments of "Turning" vs "Can you Hear the People Sing (reprise)" which makes me think it's intentional, an endless cycle of revolution, then failure, then using that failure as inspiration towards further revolution. It's interesting to embed a conversation about Les Mis and policing through a framing device that is both a call to action and itself part of the continuous cyclical failure of meaningful, necessary revolution. This is in no way trying to say I disliked or even disagreed with the video really. I thought it was well shot and well performed, and your voice is absolutely amazing. I just think it's weird that folks are coming away with the sense of a happy ending when to me, it felt like the protag ignored the criticism she received (which as a working class leftist, I found echoes material conditions of my coworkers) and is dooming herself into that cycle just as Les Amis did. This is an unhappy ending, to me

Excellent analysis. I agree. My own coworkers and friends largely don't get it. I think it's because Social Liberalism provides just enough Feel Good that they can have the kick of "I'd better write my congressman and consider voting in an off peak election cycle" in response to "hey the world is on fire and police are being used to brutalize anyone who dissents meaningfully" so that they can shield themselves from the bread crumb trail of extreme cognitive dissonance looking their actions and lifestyle choices directly to the systems of oppression that make them want to seek escape in the first place. They are bound upon a karmic wheel largely of their own making and refuse to examine the material conditions to find a way off the rack. It's hideous to watch.

Hello youtube algorithm, would you like another comment? The only Les Mis interaction I've had in my life was watching a junior version my younger siblings performed in as preteens (it was about as enthralling as you can expect a bunch of bible belt babies can be) and I'm generally lukewarm on musicals as a general rule. I will however, watch Neil Farrel watching paint dry so here I am, pleasantly surprised by this excellent video. How does this not have more views (just above 500 as of writing this)?

at one point when i was sorta seriously learning the clusterfuck of language that is french, i looked into the original french version of the musical, and the whole cast encore at the end is a lot more, you know, french. those franks do love their protests. anyway, some notable verses include "for every barricade that falls, a hundred more more will rise" and "a dream might die but you can never bury the future". as a final note, video pog.

Your voice is angelic. This is a good discussion. I sometimes wonder at what KZbin essays could work as larger and more elaborate productions and this feels like an excellent example of one of those. Where a larger cast each going thru their own narrative on the topic would serve it well. This is good bedrock.

Long ago, when I had a job running the wastewater system of a place that painted car parts, I was introduced to the distinction between an enforcement approach and a compliance approach to getting people not to do stuff like polluting the river. The Department of Environmental Quality wasn't there to catch bad guys. It was there to make sure people running wastewater systems knew what they were doing. We still would have gotten fined, if I had been a bad guy bent on dumping as much much phosphate as possible into the river. But nobody who runs a wastewater system is a cartoon villain. Setting up the system to try to catch the bad guys wouldn't have worked very well. Some people say we should abolish police and reimagine law enforcement with investigators who aren't also municipal soldiers. I've said that myself, often enough. But I also say we should abolish law enforcement, and deal with crime with a compliance approach, and when that fails, a restorative rather than punitive response.

(just a quick note : the more liberal July monarchy king was a d'Orléans, not a Bourbon. The division of french monarchists between the Bourbon-supporting "légitimistes" and the d'Orléans-supporting "orléanistes" defined a lot of the political transformations of the 19th century in France, it's pretty interesting if any history nerd's reading this)

This is excellent. I found you because of your MZB / Mists video. Yes ACAB. I love thinking of Les Mis this way...I think there's a reason that this musical always stuck with me. Maybe it helped me towards my abolitionist journey. I loved the trying to convince your liberal less progressive friend part and that you basically had her quote from "A Letter From A Birmingham Jail" at you I also appreciated the feeling of all of this repeating. But the thing is we can't stop fighting. Mariame Kaba talks about "hope as a discipline". That's what I try to keep focusing on. It has definitely been a history in our society that when progress happens, power fights back. But we have made progress in many fronts. And we can't be satisfied with the status quo. The thing about kkops is that all of it is controlled at the local/ city or municipal level and there are ways to organize folx to make changes there. It will take a lot. But we need dedicated people in all areas to organize, and push at the local level. And continue to hope and dream of the world we know there can be.

I doubt most people here don't already know this but just in case bear with me while I state all the following: Police in America today exist for one reason and one reason only... Actually for TWO reasons: ONE, the "revenue generation" aspect; aka the demand or taking from us what's ours by force aka THEFT (extortion, racketeering, whatever you wanna call it, the tickets and bogus vehicle stops (harassment) part; "civil asset forfeiture", literal legalized stealing) And, TWO, To keep the jails and prisons full. Mass incarceration can't happen by itself you know. THIS IS THEIR MAIN PURPOSE. THAT IS IT. *IT.* Emergency response is just something they have to do to justify their existence. It's literally like 5% of their time. The rest of the time they're sitting on their ass or doing revenue generation or harassing people trying to find people with open petty warrants (often the homeless because it's the easiest, or they'll cruise thru a poor neighborhood), because all that is MONEY for the state or county. That's the only reason they do it, altho racism certainly plays a part too. Why do you think cash bail has been around for so long and they fight its removal tooth and nail?? Who wants to give up that gravy train?? And then finally you have your detectives who do investigations of supposed "serious" crimes. They don't cruise the streets usually and to my knowledge they aren't the ones causing the problems (although some are amoral and have knowingly forced convictions out of people they knew were innocent or ordered the picking up of random persons, often black, to try to force confessions for unsolved major cases). We need the first responder and investigative parts yes (preferably without the evil forced confessions part), but do we need the other two?? No of *COURSE* not. That's we why need full and complete abolition of those functions and all "police-ING" in this second-rate country. Policing for profit is literally the name of the game in America, and I call that no different than mafia tactics, corrupt, oppressive, and an unacceptable violation of every citizen's personal and civil rights. Then there's all the violence and shooting, often fatal, that these animals initiate from their deliberate and intentional aggressions (because they are unstable, brainless, psychotic or what I would call evil) with ZEROOOO consequences 99.5% of the time. Police in this country are often (not always but often) no better than any other criminal gang, simply legitimatized in the public's eye due to TV programs and the fact they wear a magic suit. You're GODDAMN RIGHT I want to see that end. Too bad very few of the politicians care about how these predators are acting towards the rest of us out here, much less end the intentional practice of mass incarceration and the *billions* of dollars it generates annually, not to mention all the jobs for people who profit from it or get off on controlling others, that it provides from one end to the other.

I think for liberals there’s a difference between believing an idea is right and knowing how an idea can be implemented. Like a lot of times you have a better shot at convincing a lib if you can explain how that idea can be made reality, and it feels like the policies libs want are far-fetched and hard to get anyway (convincing a police department to even minorly change their policies is hard) so a path to progressive ideas seems unimaginable in comparison
@Talmonis42
@Talmonis42 3 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right. As I lost my idealism over the years from the never ending failure to achieve any meaningful progress, Liberal with an emphasis on Harm Reduction is where I ended up. There's a lot of "nice things" I wish America could have that socialists want, like universal healthcare, housing, etc. that I know we won't ever get. There are just too many conservatives in America to even pretend to believe in getting enough votes to enact anything more than what the most skittish moderate can understand. So we (as in Liberals) do what we can to keep the right from dragging us backward. Pinning our hopes on what is practically impossible, is just going to get more right wing bastards in power. And yes, it truly sucks.
@YourCapyFrenBigly_3DPipes1999
@YourCapyFrenBigly_3DPipes1999 3 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate both of your statements, and I think you're really right on regarding many libs. Their heart's in the right place but right now, things look very discouraging, so pull back on their expectations, consciously or otherwise. That's understandable. And it's true, they really do, BUT, I believe it's incumbent upon us to try not to give in to this same feeling. I'm not ready to give up on fighting for real change just yet. I think we should keep on fighting as hard as we can and basically just resolve to keep doing it for as long as it takes until we die, to put it bluntly, and hopefully if all the good changes that good socialists (I call myself a libertarian socialist but it doesn't matter; Leftists are Leftists) like us want aren't realized by then, then they will be taken up hopefully to be acheived by the next generation. Better to die trying for ALL the marbles than give up right?? I totally understand tho. The US has slid SO far backwards over the last 40+ years it's truly a wonder anything still works. Let's hope all that is about to change. I'd rather die trying for better, than let the less-than-moral corporate-serving guvmint assholes that exist today and some less-than-aware comfortable middle-class Dems set the agenda. I completely understand the feeling tho. It's only natural, but we can't give up though. Future generations need us to get out there and do the best we can. Victory- or die trying!! Hoorah! lol ✊🏾✊🏼✊🏿✊🏻

@@hootsyoutube I think it’s the idea of random crime happening in suburban communities really scares white people, particularly women who have more of a reason to fear strangers

Also that the priorities and disjointed isolated state of our law enforcement in the USA for serial killers to get away with it longer leading to higher body counts and for them to get good enough to attempt higher risk targets like upper middle class white women....(higher risk due to media coverage being more animated when showcasing white women victims and the likelihood that the victim would have a relation in a position to pursue cop involvement for longer) that being said there is also the argument that they just get caught more often in the USA leading to greater media coverage and sensationalizing leading to more, let's say morbidly interesting stories surrounding serial killers. Either way middle class white women are in the sweet spot of theoretical security both bodily and financially to be prime consumers of media that lets them get in touch with their fears with out reminding them too much of the daily potential for violence experienced by lower classes. It also alleviates those fears by suggesting by watching you can prevent this from happening to you. Interesting enough true crime has recently expanded to include more POC audiences also targeting the middle class....

Hoots may think of herself as a theater kid, but a protagonist in a video searching for a thesis to said video is so such film kid energy.

I had a bunch of leftist youtubers bookmarked to catch up on, and was finally making progress on the list, so when i finished watching all of the Liberal Cook's oeuvre and their latest video mentioned a musical they participated in, it really worked out that it was a video from someone else on my list! Great video.

I know it's just a character but 'centerist neo-libral' hoots in that first scene with that obnoxiously smug little smile and head tilting makes me want to commit the violent crime of making her sit in time out so they can just...not make that condescending expression while being so...ugh. God I just found your channel yesterday but you are an insanely good actress.
