Policy Briefing: Independent Prison Oversight

I'm a criminal justice advocate in Tx and all for independent oversight. I was always taught that no area of government should not have proper checks and balances and never be allowed to police themselves or over who they govern without an independent watchdog that keeps all parties honest, provides transparency and holds all parties accountable. Also, if another agency is mandated by the State, then prisons should also have to conform & provide the necessary requirements ie nursing homes and what the State mandates in duty of proper care and humane treatment then prisons that hold individuals unable to care for themselves due to age, disability or illness should be cared for w/same quality of care & standards.
