Why was this trip so different from his previous? Penelope, the one person who ever "saw" him, made him feel like his true self was enough, and kept him grounded, stopped writing to him. Poor boy spiraled without her presence in his life. The ruse only lasted a few months before he couldn't take it any more. I look forward to both him and Pen embracing and learning to love their true selves (with help from one another) in Part 2.

Colin's behavior feels off because it's supposed to, he's putting up a front. Very deliberate choice on the showrunner's part. Anthony in S1 said he should have taken Colin to brothels. Marina in S2 said he was just a boy lost in fantasies. We've seen the way many of the lords behave towards women, including Anthony when he was whoring around, and even Benedict sleeping with different women. Colin has been told the way he feels and thinks is wrong, again and again. So he's pretending to be what the men around him think he should be. When Penelope was running away at the ball, those guys told him, "After you came back, you're much more fun." In the carriage, Anthony and Benedict say to Colin, "Who are you?" Eloise asks if that's the new him. Penelope, who knows him so well, calls him out on LW's paper. I feel like some people just don't seem to be taking the time to try and figure it out, even when the show explicitly tells us what's happening.

It’s actually kinda crazy how many people missed the mark on this. They keep saying Luke Newton’s acting is awful for the Colin flirting scenes, but the opposite is true because those scenes were meant to be awkward on purpose… Colin will return to his old self eventually.

I can't agree enough with this. I can't believe how they missed the entire point of Colin's new personality and even called Polin's romance as rushed this season when their story is literally being built up for two seasons. They keep projecting their expectation without trying to really understand the connection of all seasons. They just want to get straight to "oh, he's bad, he must grovel or else, he's not worth it" or "he must grovel a lot because he deserves it." I remember having the same idea before I read the book, but Colin served an outstanding character development that I forgot about my desire to see him grovel.

Colin’s family has a habit of mocking his endeavors and got played by marina and embarrassed in front of ton. I don’t blame him for changing. It’s an amplified version of what Eloise is doing with her “if you can’t beat them join them” outlook. Men of the ton are expected to be rakes so he is playing the part. But he really is just a soft lover boy at heart.

I don’t think Colin lost any of the Bridgerton money. Some do (I think because Anthony confronted him about taking money out of the account), but Colin said it’s because he was *thinking* about investing it and then the next time he meets with Jack to discuss it, Will tells Colin that Jack is a fraud and we later find out that Colin believed Will but acted like he didn’t so he could find proof that he was running a con (which Colin did with Cressida’s necklace). So I don’t think he actually ever gave Jack any of the family’s money. At least that’s how I remember it, but maybe I need to rewatch it again because I could be misremembering how that played out.

The irony of everyone being (understandably) upset about Colin saying something to a handful of men that might diminish Penelope in their eyes, but then going super easy on Pen for belittling Colin to the entire ton as Lady Whistledown... or understanding Penelope's obliviousness to Colin's feelings later in the season, while regularly calling Colin stupid for being oblivious to hers (despite the fact that much of evidence we saw of them in seasons 1 and 2 were things Colin wouldn't have seen anyway, like her watching him from afar, or talking about him with others when he wasn't even there)... People see Penelope in all her rich nuance, full of flaws, but lovable and relatable nonetheless... but only seem to see Colin through the lens of how he affects Penelope. It's unfair, to say the least. He's such a good guy, even with all his flaws
