We do this every year in Australia with Oplatek sent by our relatives in Poland. But we wash ours down with Wisniowka ! This is the first Christmas without my Polish dad who passed away aged 101😢 and fourth Christmas without mum. Lucky we have this tradition they kept with us since coming to Australia after WW2. So glad you reminded me about the Oplatek. Its our responsibility now.

There used to be a Polish Import shop in Elizabeth, NJ. Wonder if it's still there. I went in there a lot when they shipped me to NJ as a kid. Wonderful ceramics and wood carvings. That's a Hazel Atlas pink elephant shot glass. Very rare and highly collectible. How doi I know that? I collect pink Hazel Atlas. So cute! Fun tradition. Nice to keep things like that alive and passed along. Thanks Grandma and Grandpa! 🩷 🩷 🩷

@GrandmaFeral Yes, years ago, when my parents were still alive, our grandparents would send us a couple of wafers in a Christmas card, too! I miss those days!! Sadly, there are no Polsh deli's even close to where I live. 😟 Thank you so much for your nice note!! 💕

H Grandpa and Grandpa, thank you for sharing your Christmas Eve traditions with us. Well I am half Polish and I never heard of this before, very interesting. I am also half Italian and on Christmas Eve my father passed around Italian Pizzelle Cookies. My grandmother, his mother, made them that’s the Italian side of the family. For Polish my mother always made a fish called “whitings” and something called Kapusta, which was green cabbage and peas.. but my grandmother on my mother’s side, very Polish, in fact she spoke Polish very well has never mentioned this tradition to us that I remember. Even to this day we still have seafood on Christmas Eve , just not the same type of fish. I really enjoyed this video because I love to learn other traditions. Thank you both ! God Bless … Brian. PS I just called and asked my mother if as a child if her mother and father did it and she said yes! And describe the wafer is exactly like the one you featured in the video and I asked her how come we never did that? and she didn’t know why. BTW, like your cat sweater and the red one Grandpa has on , very festive!

Thanks for showing us this tradition. On a different topic, do you know of any Polish bakeries on Long Island that would have Kolaczki cookies. The dough is cream cheese, butter and flour shaped into a diamond filled with apricot or raspberry jam. I used to get them in Queens but that bakery changed hands and they didn’t know what I was talking about when I went there recently. Thanks in advance.

We always had oplatek at our house. Now that my mom have passed i still do this. But sometimes when i don't have oplatek...i use bread in stead. We share bread and exchange whises ...before starting Wigilia. Of course we also wait for this first star to appear in the sky. Than you for sharing , this. Happy Holidays Grandma and Grandpa. What a lovely Christmas Eve tradition! I'm surprised I haven't heard of it before, growing up on eastern Long Island with many of Polish heritage. I do remember chruscikì (angel wings) in the grocery store, seemingly year-round, not just at Christmas as we see now. Love the pink elephants!! That was a big boozy thing back in the day. I have swizzle sticks topped with little pink elephants in various poses, including one in a flying pose, and another plotzed face down on his trunk.🥴🥂😂
@GrandmaFeral7 күн бұрын
Hi Patricia this has been a tradition passed down from my polish grandmother. My Mom made the most delicious homemade chrusciki she wanted Grandpa and I to learn how to make them but we are still trying to make them like she did. So far no success. I have an Elephant collection and the shot glass is one of my favorites. The swizzle sticks were a big thing years ago. I have a few from weddings with a bride and groom on top and their names and date on the stick. Have a nice day❤️Grandma👩🏻
